Hyper Light Drifter, the long anticipated retro-inspired action role-playing release from Heart Machine, will beam down to the PlayStation 4 from 26th July. While the date hasn't been officially etched in stone by the developer just yet, it has popped up as one of the pre-order offers in Sony's Totally Digital sale in Europe. We fully anticipate the North American launch date to be the same.
In fact, this is likely to be a headliner in the platform holder's PLAY 2016 promotion, which spotlights the finest digital titles on the PlayStation Store. The manufacturer's set to outline plans regarding this year's initiative starting 19th July, and we'll of course bring you all of the news as it breaks. One final thought on Hyper Light Drifter, though: it was crowd-funded on Kickstarter. Not every game's a Mighty No. 9!

Can't wait for Hyper Light Drifter! Seen a bit of gameplay and it looks awesome
Wehey! I've been following this game for yonks! I reckon it'll be pretty good, although apparently it's a bit tough. Hopefully it's not too tough (Titan Souls style) as I kind of want an experience I can cruise through with a moderate challenge.
Also I don't feel 100% sure it'll quite make this date.. Just surprised the devs hadn't mentioned anything? :S
But between this and I Am Satsuma (or whatever it is!!) I'll be a happy bunny!
@kyleforrester87 I think they're waiting on Sony America to announce the Play 2016 lineup.
Can't wait for this game, already back it in ks 3 years ago. I hope it's cross save with ps vita.
@get2sammyb fair play, here's hopin!
What's up with the Vita version? No simultaneous release?
Never heard of it. May have to check it out...
@kyleforrester87 I hope its good for you mate, cant see it being fez levels of good but we will see.
@themcnoisy sure thanks! To be fair the obvious similarities are the music being produced by the same guy and the similar 2D art! But I loved Fez's atmosphere (which had a lot to do with its sound design) so I'm hoping HLD resonates in the same way.
Also I loved Fez as it was relaxing to play - hoping the toughness of HLD doesn't make it too frustrating..
@JaxonH that's being ported by another team, apparently it is coming along well but won't be released at the same time.
REALLY great news, been waiting ages on this one, just looks amazing. Might go ahead and preorder to catch that sweet deal.
@themcnoisy @kyleforrester87 Iiiiiiiiiiii'm back!! sorry it's been a while, hope everyone's doing good!
Anyhow, back on topic - can't wait for this one, definite day one purchase. I've got a couple pals that picked it up on PC, and all said it was really good! Apparently the screenshots don't do it justice, the atmosphere is supposed to be fantastic when it all comes together in motion with the soundtrack. Hyped!
@SteveButler2210 Hi mate glad to see you again was going to drop you a message on PSN, good to have you back!
@SteveButler2210 Hi mate, doing great. Your work have a change of heart and allow internet usage again?
Why is it that so many PS4 / Vita cross-buy titles release on Sony's handheld waaaaaaay after PS4 these days? Over a year in some cases...
Assault Android Cactus, Axiom Verge, Hyper Light Drifter, Klaus, Salt and Sanctuary, etc. The list goes on and on.
Like many Push Square regulars, I'm fortunate enough to own both systems. It's just that some games β particularly certain indies β feel so much better on Vita!
@SteveButler2210 I had a quick blast of HLD on a pals PC a few weeks back, and you're absolutely right, it looks even better first hand. It's like the very best bits of Bastion, Fez, Titan Souls and Zelda all rolled into one cohesive whole... and I completely fell in love right then and there!
Don't get me wrong, it isn't perfect, but from what I saw, it's a 9/10 all day long
Awesome, pre-ordered! Interestingly, it was listed as a 'bundle' on the PS Store page, does anyone out there know what comes with it? is it just the cross-play stuff or is there a dynamic theme? Very much hoping for a dynamic theme!
@xxAcesHighxx I think the reason cross-buy titles usually release long after ps4 is because the optimization required to port the game to vita, remember the ps4 has 8gb of ram, the vita only has β512mb.
Agree about indie game feels better on vita, game like hotline miami, spelunky, and hld is practically made for the vita, I'm replaying axiom verge again because it's so good to play it on vita.
@xxAcesHighxx Because the porting process requires a ton of work and its not economically viable for a small team to work on both versions at the same time, unfortunately. Your feedback sounds great, looking forward to it!
@kyleforrester87 @wiiware My question was largely rhetorical to be honest, but you guys are absolutely right, of course. Vita ports often require substantial optimisation to get them running at an acceptable level. Just look at how much work went into making Axiom Verge the triumph it is on Vita. In fact, I'd argue that save for one or two tiny framerate hiccups here and there, it's even better than it ever was on PS4.
I guess it's just that when a highly anticipated indie releases on PS4 with no word as to when we can expect the handheld variant, I tend to worry that it might go the way of Isaac: Afterbirth, Broforce, Galak-Z, Rain World, etc. and never see the OLED light of day.
@xxAcesHighxx I've not played AV on Vita. It worth it? PS4 version was awesome. Surely it's just the same game though?
@kyleforrester87 Yeah, sure it's the same game, but it's how Axiom Verge 'feels' on Vita. Seriously, settle down on the sofa when it's nice and dark, plug in a good pair of headphones (essential) and fire it up on your Vita. I challenge you not to admit it's a totally different experience to playing it on your living room TV.
@get2sammyb Is this available for pre-order on the US PSN, I cannot seem to find anything about it on there. Been really looking forward to this but I don't even see where they show it releasing on the 26th or anything, is it just EU?
