Marvel Ultimate Alliance and its sequel was excreted onto the PlayStation Store this week, presumably as Activision scrambles to fulfil its contractually obliged quota of comic book-themed releases. And lo and behold, the port kinda sucks. Digital Foundry's dug out its ol' framerate ticker yet again and put the first game through its paces, revealing 1080p presentation and a marginally improved framerate.
The new-gen version does refrain from dipping below 30 frames-per-second, but its framerate is unlocked, leading to judder as the performance ebbs and flows. It's better than the original PlayStation 3 launch title by some margin, but considering the age of this game – it's almost a decade old now – a locked 60 frames-per-second should be expected.
It's not like there even many improvements in the visuals either; jaggies have been cleaned up and shadowing improved, but that's about it. We wouldn't mind if it was flogging these for low, low prices, but considering the original and its sequel will cost you close to the price of a brand new game, we'd encourage you to wait for a sale. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is next…

Urgh, that's annoying. Will probably skip this entirely now. At least until it's under a tenner.
I really don't understand the price point. Looked at Toukiden last night on a whim...£54.99. Playstation store prices are a joke out of sales.
And they wanted how much???
well it's activision, did any one really expect a lot of effort to be put into this
I wonder if the Playstation version will get the DLC that was exclusive to Xbox.
You mean Activision did a bare bones re-release and charged too much? No Wai.......
@Shellcore It's to keep retailers happy mostly, as well as what Publishers choosing their own prices.
@adf86 Should be in line with Amazon who really don't give one. That's where my money goes.
I remember these games being particularly glitchy. Did they fix that, at least?
PSPlus for the next year.
@Shellcore Yay but Amazon is the biggest online retailer so they have power in that regard, but they also don't pay for bricks and mortar shops not to mention probably a lot less in import and export tax as well.
@adf86 I don't understand the business need to be anti-competitive. Just as driving value out of the market is not advisory' effectively price fixing to please other businesses with outdated business models is just strange. They should be pleasing the consumer. As much as I enjoy spending time in my local game at lunch, if I see something I like, I will check the price online first. Amazon also stock physical products. Obviously, psn store does not. What part of this makes sense?
Why no review from any major game site. Seriously no reviews anywhere. ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????
The port isn't awful... it's just the fact that it's a port and not a full fledged remake. From what I have seen, there are no texture updates or anything. The game was just simply upscaled to 1080p and thrown onto the new systems. I don't even think they attempted to improve the frame-rate at all; the frame-rate is uncapped and scatters from 30-40, which doesn't seem intentional. I might pick it up when it gets to $20 or cheaper... but $40? No thanks!
@wiggleronacid From what I've read, they're not even the Gold/Complete editions with the DLC for each game. They're the barebones titles in which you can assume they'll re-charge for the DLC down the road.
@Shellcore I'm not suggesting it makes sense, but it seems to be the nature of the business. Especially companies like Activision where words like bargain and discounts are very alien to them.
