The wait has been longer than an intergalactic tour of the universe, but No Man's Sky is finally finished on the PlayStation 4. Hello Games founder Sean Murray – who's sprouted a rather feral beard during the gruelling development cycle – confirmed the news on Twitter earlier this evening, with a photograph of the Guildford-based team celebrating with the final gold master.
We posted our first article about No Man's Sky on 8th December 2013, when the title was put under the spotlight at the VGX Awards. In the two and a half years since, we've written over 40 further articles about the space-faring foray, detailing a flood which threatened to decimate the developer – and the game's subsequent resurgence at E3 2014. It went on to win our Game of the Show that year.
Now the title's finally on track for its early August release, and the word on the street is that pre-orders are tracking well ahead of expectations. The final question that remains unanswered is whether the interstellar voyage can possibly live up to the hype that it's amassed. It's going to be a big ask, but wouldn't it be wonderful if this teensy British team met the colossal expectations that its set for itself?

I can't wait to lose myself in the solitude of that universe.
I very rarely do pre-orders, tempted to with this I must admit.
I cant wait im so hyped for this game
If I was Seam Murray I'd be saying "For this beard, I paid the iron price"!!!
Woop woop! Can't wait to get lost in this game!
And now we'll get to see if it lives up to the hype it received for a while.
Still not really sure what the hole point of this game is really?! I shall wait for the reviews to come in before I buy this as its £45/£50 in stores.
Gonna lock myself in a dark room and set off into spacey land.
finally the reason why i bought a ps4 for cant wait.
Already preordered the steelcase version, if the game's good I'll pick it on the game shop.
@Midzark That the standard, always wait for the review before you bought a game, it's okay to preorder as long you can cancel it.
I'm waiting for reviews. I'm still not convinced that there is actually anything interesting to do after a couple hours of play.
I bought PS4 for this title 2 years back and made like 74 preorders already. Only ~30 days to go!
I'm in. Media blackout. I'm going to shut everything off and go into space motherf*ckers!
@Midzark it's a survival game with lore & making your way to the centre of the universe, that's your goal.
Cant wait. It will be interesting to see if any of us can meet up in game. That's my objective anyway.
Woohoo!! So, so excited! Great pic and really great to see a dedicated team of developers get so pumped for their work. Hope they have a really successful launch and can't wait to see what this universe has in store.
I can't wait!!!! been checking the news on this everyday since it was announced around 2 years ago... I was gutted that it was put back but was understanding about it (no verbal abuse or death threats made) I'm off work on the day of release and will be pre-ordering it on the PS Network so I can pre-load ready for 12pm/am on August 10th...space here I come
Patiently waiting on my ps4 limited edition. One of the best limited editions I have seen with a really fair price. Great news, won't be delayed any further!
Will this live up to everybody's hyped expectations? I'm not bothered because I know I'll love it. I just hope it sells very well (if the critics aren't too harsh with their reviews) and makes the HG team some coin for their mighty hard slog.
Woo hoo, limited edition preordered
I'm hoping this game lives up to everyone's expectations for the sake of the developers. Sure be heartbreaking to push through so many obstacles over the span of four years just to end up making a game that everyone hates. Especially with such a small group of devs.
come to papa little no man's sky. Finally a game with no real ending. I can play it for ever!
@Neolit Exactly.
Hope they knock it out of the park!
"wouldn't it be wonderful if this teensy British team met the colossal expectations that its set for itself?"
I really hope so. There's so much potential with this game but I remain dubious...
That photo says to me that Sean Murray is happy with the final cut - this game seems phenomenal in its own right, but even better played after the likes of GTA Online for extended gaming sessions.
Day one purchase, along with the soundtrack 👌
I was so hyped for this but for all the things ive read I just have a nagging doubt about it. (in saying that I bought home front goliath edition today that was half price. Games in the corner somewhere me & kids were to busy pissing about with the RC Goliath toy).
I'm afraid it will follow the norm and have a 5-7GB day one patch to prevent me from being able to play it for hours upon hours of putting it in my PS4.
@ApostateMage For those of us who temper our expectations and only allow hype to creep in with games we are CERTAIN we will enjoy
, it will definitely live up to it. For the tens of thousands younguns on the internet who hype games to astronomical levels and then feel betrayed if there is even a sliver of disdain towards the game, noting ever lives up to their hype, lol. Luckily Hello games has done an excellent job explaining exactly what NMS is, and even giving alot of detail on the many mechanics while still leaving alot of mystery and intrigue. I don't normally let myself get hyped for any game anymore(jaded I suppose) but this one is different and i certainly cannot wait.
@Neolit I feel like this game carries with it alot of weight for what "indy" titles can be and what Indy devs can create. If this turns out to be the hit I expect, it will definitively show that awesome AAA level games can be made by a small, passionate, development team. I think their hardworking, passion, and dedication will shine through in the finished product and may put to shame many of the big AAA developers with their bloated budgets and aversion for risk taking.
Awesome I will be grabbing this day one - fantastic!
I'm still of the mindset that this game will be quantity over quality and the environments will become very samey very fast, but I'm anxious to be proven wrong.
Gawd Dhemmit. I will wait until PSVR is out. Then first thing will be jump into NMS with the VR. I may be fired, but heck.
