It's taken a little longer than Sony may have hoped, but the PlayStation 4 has now crossed the three million units milestone in Japan, according to the latest Media Create report. The console launched on 22nd February 2014 in the platform holder's home nation, so it's taken over two years to achieve the target.
While that sounds promising on paper, it's perhaps worth remembering that the PlayStation 3 currently commands an install base of over 10 million units in Japan, while both the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable crossed the 20 million units threshold. Unfortunately, the Japanese industry is less interested in traditional gaming consoles these days.

Unfortunately for you? Why you guys specifically? That confuses me XD
But yay....3 million? It finally passed the Wii U that's...nothing to be proud of. Also who went into Photoshop with that image because...it looks half baked. Like the new features people want for PS4 XD I kid I kid.
@BLPs "Us" as in "All of us". A thriving Japanese console industry is good for everyone.
Edited.
I don't know how, but every part of that photo looks photoshopped.
Now global sales!
I honestly don't think Sony looks at Japan as a major piece of its home console market anymore. 2 years and 3 million, pretty shabby honestly. Of course they will continue to support and push for the Japanese market, but it isn't nearly as important as in years past.
@Majic12 3 million is loads, that's the population of Wales.
2,999,999 more than the Xbox ONE then in Japan
@Majic12 I don't think it's that they don't care, but they have to be realistic, and the console market's dying there. They smartly focused on the West for the PS4, and it's paid off for them.
They'll still push Final Fantasy XV and Persona 5 very hard. September will be an important month for them in Japan, and it should give us a better indication of the state of the industry over there.
@get2sammyb Oh fully agreed, maybe I worded it to harshly, but you are correct. They chose the smart path focusing on the west and it has paid off. FF15 will be the true testament however, just as you predict. If FF and eventually DQ11 don't move the needle massively then it could be more than just a trend, and simply fact.
More PS4, more devs, more games. Good news.
