As the anti-weeb on the Push Square team, you may well be expecting this article to be laced with snark – but no, Kingslaive: Final Fantasy XV actually looks alright. The spin-off movie based upon the long-overdue role-playing game will hit select US theatres on 19th August, and then will be followed by a digital release on the PlayStation Store from 30th August – a month prior to the new game.
And it does genuinely look decent, doesn't it? Given that this is not a major Hollywood production, the CG work is still some of the finest that we've ever seen – the art direction and overall visual fidelity is absolutely insane. And the acting – with household names like Lena Headey, Aaron Paul, and Sean Bean involved – is surprisingly good, too.
The film can be enjoyed as a standalone experience, though if you're planning to pick up Final Fantasy XV at some point, you'll obviously get much more out of it. If you don't want to see it in cinemas or fancy downloading the digital version, then a Blu-ray and DVD release will drop on 4th October as well.

How does Sean Bean's character die?
Any word on a Ultra 4K disc release playable on Neo and X1S? I still don't have a 4k tv, but I'm slowly wearing down my wife. And if they bundle a PS4k w/ FFXV and a 4k movie disc, maybe that will win her over, she's really excited for this game, we haven't played a good FF game since 12, feels like a really long time.
Looks really good!Did someone say there was cgi in this?
I'll be surprised if this film does well at the cinema though..
Will be getting my copy of the film with the game when it arrives so I doubt I'll go to the cinema to watch it..but who knows?
So do I need to watch this film and the animated series before playing the game?are they prequels?
I'm watching on disc on day of release but I'd have loved to have watched on the big screen.
@Wazeddie22 from what I gather the movie is takes place at right before and parallel of the game. And shows what happens during the assualt on the kindom during which noctis n company are absent for.The anime so far is during the middle of the game tho (with no spoilers) but flash backs to give some background on the characters.
@BladeRider Excellent! Thanks for clearing that up for me.Guess I'll be watching the film first then diving straight into the game then
What about a UK release? And preferably including outside London.
Will it be better than that other final fantasy movie?
