Sony has just announced the games coming to PlayStation Plus next month, with the space-based Rebel Galaxy and physics-based puzzler Tricky Towers leading the charge on the PlayStation 4. You can check out our review for Tricky Towers here.
PlayStation 3 users can also look forward to Yakuza 5 and Retro/Grade, while Vita owners will get a taste of Patapon 3. All PlayStation Plus users will also gain access to the game Ultratron.

Yakuza 5 on PS3, that was pretty quick.
Meh.
REtro/Grade was free for PS Plus at Augoust 2012
I don't usually complain about PS+ offerings, but this month is simply awful.
Are we sure Retro/Grade is accurate? Had it years ago for PS+. And not wanting to be rude, but it really wasn't fun the first time round.
@Melucine I knew it! I thought it looked familiar!
The only things I've bothered with from Plus in the past year are Zombi and... umm... some top-down space shootery thing which was available at the same time but whose name I can't remember at the moment. And I haven't touched either of those yet.
I'm not one of those to usually moan about the Plus offerings, as I'm well aware that the value you get depends on what you like and what you've already bought. But even I have to say that I'm finding slim pickings on Plus for the PS4. I'm not at all anti-Indie, but I am sick of 'retro' style games, and that's 99% of what they're releasing for Plus on PS4. We're coming up 3 years into the generation now, and I'd honestly have expected a number of the titles from launch/first 6 months to be going free on Plus by now.
I know there have been some 'decent' titles released on Games With Gold, and it might be expected that they'd hit both systems around the same time. Call me paranoid, but given past behaviour in this area, I'm wondering if MS are paying for 'bigger' 3rd party games not to hit Plus for a while.
With the greatest of respect to Sony, this month is really limp. Technically Yakuza 5 was free a few weeks ago in what looked like a store error. Either they pulled the trigger on that too early or they're just mitigating the losses they made in their mistake.
And no one, ever, has been happy to get one of those block building physics puzzle games as a gift. No one wanted that.
Wow, Sony doesn't even give a damn this month.
The last couple of months have been pretty good for the PS4, this is a bit disappointing but with NMS out in a couple of weeks this month is taken care of.
Woeful, just woeful, thought it was starting to get up to a level where I'd start paying for it again, but no chance. I want something decent for the PS4 for my money.
Nah. Nothing for me there. That tetris tower thing looks particularly wretched.
@LieutenantFatman Yes, it's listed on both blog posts.
@Nifty I must live in a very close but parallel universe, because other than the first few months of the PS4's life (With Resogun, and a few others), the PS+ games for the PS4 have been nothing but garbage. This month though I am excited because both PS4 games look to be pretty enjoyable. This is probably the best PS+ month that the PS4 has ever had, though the one with Tropico 5 was decent.
Yakuzza 5 so happy I was going to buy it when it went on sale again. Sony are treating the PS3 faithfull Rebel galaxy is also on my wanted list Sony you have done it again another satisfied customer. Not sure about tricky towers not into puzzlers. People are not happy but you can pick up a PS Plus membership for about £33 which split over 12 months is a small price to pay for online gaming and free games.
Already got rebel galaxy and have around 40 hours of fun from that, it's actually a great game. Definitely worth a play for free!
I knew I was going to be disappointed my youtube subscription channel was filled with video's of a Tetris clone! No idea about Rebel Galaxy and couldn't get an idea of the game-play from the short snippet in the video. Not worth turning on my PS3 for the games on offer there but in fairness it would have to be a very special game (no doubt already owned anyway) for me to consider gaming on that when I could be be gaming either of my next gen consoles.
As the say, Greatness Awaits so looks like I will be waiting for at least another month....
Lame. Sony definitely mailed it. Reckon they thought they'd have a free pass after Furi.
Just Patapon 3 for me.
Bit weird though that they're offering up a 'free' space sim just before NMS is out.
@dryrain I honestly don't think that they gave Yakuza 5, becuase they want it. I like many others, believe that since we already got it form the PS store, they decided to give so they can minimize the damage.
what total poor show for ps4. Only good thing is I wanted to try Rebel Galaxy (on PC). But this is seriously rubbish show.
I really hope Sony do the right thing and replace Retro/Grade. I appreciate you're going to get bad months every now and then but recycling old freebies is unacceptable and more likely to make me stop subscribing over anything else.
@thedevilsjester I was making comment on the last couple of months, not the entire history of games offered.
I don't subscribe to a yearly subscription because generally the games are poor.
This lineup is exciting for 4 simple reasons:
Pata
Pata
Pata
PON.
@Paranoimia Microsoft have way less subscribers so it may be easier convincing publishers to giveaway a game to a smaller subset of the market.
That said, I think both services have been very comparable in terms of the types of titles given away.
AUGUST psn titles really Rubbish... THIS IS NOT FOR THE GAMERS!!
@Nifty I don't think the last couple of months are any different (June, July) are both some of the worst months in PS+ (for PS4) history. May was slightly better because of Tropico 5, but then the only other good PS+ (PS4) months were the first few with Contrast, Resogun, and Don't Starve.
I don't subscribe to PS+ for the games, I actually buy games I want, its not a hobby that I expect to get the best games for a $5/mo fee. (Nor would I even want those games via PS+)
Just when I thought Plus was getting good...
This month is really lame for Plus freebies. Oh well.
Looks like I will be letting my subscription expire next month. NMS doesn't require plus and my ESO has been spoilt with unplayable stuttering. I will put the £5.99 to better use.
Wow if it wasn't for Yakuza 5 this month would have sucked. Can't see how people think this is a bad month with Yakuza 5.
instead of discounting same games all the time. Why not give you a voucher once a month. Free movie rentals free DLC. Or something worth DL
Yakuza fine if you actually have a PS3. Microsoft at least have the backward compatibility of some games on Gold
Rebel Galaxy might satisfy the space itch until a certain other game becomes available. The rest look useless (although I'd be well up for Yakuza if I had a PS3)
An OK month. I was thinking of picking up Rebel Galaxy on a big sale at some point so that is nice. I wasn't expecting much after back to back triple A title months.
back to garbage again for indiestation ps4.
@thedevilsjester your parallel universe sucks. Furi, saints row, okishima last month - absolutely brilliant selection.
Wow reading these comments its like your cats just been ran over by the next door neighbour. On this here site - patapon 3, Rebel Galaxy and Tricky Towers attained 7 / 7 / 6.
Not even counting Yakuza. Have a word you are all being irrational. Psplus is perfect for these type of games, I wouldn't buy them so no danger of having one of the psplus choices. Cant wait, great month.
Rebel Galaxy is really not very good, in my opinion.
Should call it Poor Mans Sky. Put down some money and play the real deal in August Having said that it might make people realise space traders can be a bit dull.
Love Ultratron. People may get more out of it if it's on PS4 as well because it don't half get hectic and the small screen doesn't lend too well to that.
This month really sucks for me since I was expecting now we were gonna get at least 1 AAA for month on PS4 but I'm excited for more people trying Yakuza 5, I honestly think is one of the greatest games of all time... everybody who have not played should immediately give it at try... I like it so much I spend the almost 200 hours necessary to platinum it
@DualWielding I loved Yakuza 5 so much.
I canceled my ps+ months ago, but last week I bough a Vita, so I was ready to sign up again...well maybe next month.
Can you use ps now on ps4 without ps+ as I only pay out of habit, rarely if ever play online mp and haven't been overly impressed with free games since well, forever. Only benefit is the additional discount on store sales makes the odd one competitive.
No Man's Sky will be taking up all my time this month so I'm not too disappointed by the poor showing
@shaggywingnut yeah i got it on release, great wee space/trade/shooter that kept me ticking over til NMS
@stevejcrow I think so. It would be ridiculous if you couldn't with it being a seperate subscription.
I was going to buy revel galaxy so that's saved me a few quid (quite literally) but otherwise it's an abysmally consistent month.
This is by far the worst month for PS+ yet, truly truly dreadful.
@thedevilsjester Did we not get NBA 2K and Saints Row, Furi. Grim fandango when did we get that? I found it quite good but to be honest I don't care anyway the good games i want I own already anyway. So the smaller games are good for me.
I thought Ps plus was starting to pick up a little although to be honest I still have quite a few Ps plus games I have yet to try (Furi,Zombi,Far Cry Blood Dragon etc) but this library of games is pretty funny because they look so bad...except for Yakuza 5 (although to be honest I gave up on the last Yakuza game we got for plus).
But hey,I'm not complaining I count Neverwinter as my plus game
Yakuza 5 for PS3 is obviously an amazing pick, but for those of us without Sony's last gen system, this is another profoundly mediocre month.
@themcnoisy @Flaming_Kaiser I don't know why you feel the need to list off games, I know exactly what games were released on PS+ since it first launched, I have been a subscriber since then.
Here is the rub, when I find a game that I think is enjoyable, that I think is worth owning, I buy the game. So if its released a year later for free on PS+, no matter how amazing the game was, it counts for absolutely nothing.
Let me put this in perspective with an exaggeration. Lets say there was an absolutely amazing game. Best game of all time. It sold many, many, millions of copies. We could say that almost everyone that had any interest in the game, already bought it. So if it came up as a PS+ freebie a year or so later, sure its an amazing title, but it counts for nothing because no body actually cares. So while you can rattle of a few good games that PS+ has given away, most of them are already owned by the majority of people that actually care about said game.
PS+ IGL is for two things: Hidden Gems that would otherwise be ignored, or new Indie launch titles.
Let me be clear, I am not blaming Sony, or saying "Bad on Sony!" or "PS+ isn't worth it", etc..., because to be honest, if Sony gave away every existing PS4 title on PS+, it wouldn't amount to much to me since it would either be games I already own, or ones that I have no intention of ever playing.
That being said, I find this months titles to be some of the best. I don't own either of them, and I think they will both be enjoyable time wasters. Not enough to spend money on them, but for free, I'm game.
Just gotta say, Rebel galaxy is genuinely really good. I bought it when it came out and played the hell out of it for a few days. very addictive. As for Tricky Towers or whatever, not my thing.
I personally think it's a great selection. As an old fan of the Escape Velocity games, Rebel Galaxy was fantastic. It was more than worth the asking price, anyone with a slight interest should try it.
For the other systems, Yakuza is a great series, and Patapon is just fun to play.
thank gawn my PS+ sub runs out at end of month. might leave re-buying until September now.
I think it's actually pretty good this month.I'm looking forward to trying out Rebel Galaxy and Yakuza 5 . I already own Patapon 3 ,Ultratron and Retro Grade and think they are all good enough to deserve a play though.
@get2sammyb It might not be that, Microsoft are a much more richer company with money to splash out, I mean look at July's games, Banner Saga 2 was released 3 weeks early to Xbox One.. And PS4, PC had to wait til 26th (yesterday) to purchase it, I mean August, Xbox are getting a saving of $120's worth of games with one being WWE2K16, imagine the money they have to spend each month for these AAA titles and it doesn't even dent their cash flow.. So, a fewer subscription base with basically better games each month, and backwards compatibility so Xbox One get 4 free games without needing to switch console's anymore to play the Xbox 360 titles, I think Xbox are at a better standing than PS, just because they can splash more money to give people better games each month and it doesn't affect them in the slightest. But PS, it affects their income a lot, because they only get sales from the console's, because nobody buys their TV's, Mobile Phone's or Sound Systems, That probably why they rarely give good games.
Man I used to love having 3 Sony consoles getting games each month. Now I only have PS4, PS+ seems really pants...
RETRO....GRADE? RETRO GRADE? REALLY? REAAAALLY???????
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
When do they offer Nba 2k16 again pls?
Rebel Galaxy was pretty fun to be fair as a fan of "Firefly". If I hadn't got it already. I think it's nice to get Indie game's for free personally.
What.A.Load.Of. (insert anything undesirable)!!!!!! Just renewed ... shoulda held on a month!!!
Like I said, I havent even touched July's games so I am fine.
Awful, awful month.
@SS2580 And Sony gave away NBA 2K16 a couple of months ago which was in the most recent NPD charts.
With respect, you're speaking nonsense.
I dunno, I'm pretty happy with this selection. Eclectic selection and a new game to boot. The Retro/Grade inclusion is a bit baffling though.
Pretty forgettable month IMO, but that is to be expected considering how good the last few months have been. Would have been cool to see Hyper Light Drifter up there(my avatar), even though I purchased it this past Tuesday I wouldn't mind seeing it go free on plus just so more people will give it a shot. Such a GREAT game, an action/adventure throwback. If this game would have released back in the NES days we would be talking about its legendary status today, it really is that good. And the soundtrack...simply amazing
Complete stupidity is what I'm seeing and not from Sony... Yakuza 5 is an awesome game, it's free and ingrates are still throwing a fit like spoiled children.
Move along...nothing to see here
None of thees games are for me but I have been very happy with the last 3-4 months so not complaining. If we get into another funk like the start of the year then I might get grumpy but I will take it for now.
Not too bothered with the free games over the next few months. If anything special is given away free I'll add it to my library, but I have a feeling I'll be addicted to No Man's Sky for the next few months/years.
Rebel galaxy! I read rogue galaxy and got super excited! So I watched the video but stupidly I misread. Tetris clone on ps4? Think I'll go out and catch pokemon this month...
Genuine question.
when I joined plus back in jan/feb I am sure psn were advertising 3 games per month on ps4 and I actually remember there being 3 for the first coupleof months. Now for the past few months its only been 2. I have asked sony and they basically said prove it. However thats left me wondering! Am I right? Or was I imagining it out of wishful thinking?
Does anyone know?
Nothing to see here, Move along please. Awful month....just terrible.
Other than Yakuza 5, which I already have, this is probably the worst PS Plus month I've ever seen. Wow.
@get2sammyb no way from someone who dosent own an xbox one im jealous of the stuff they get
pure utter trash no sugarcoating if I didn't play overwatch I would of canceled already I'm sick of Xbox getting all these great looking games and we always get some crappy space shooter obscure indie crap
@get2sammyb got to disagree I'm afraid first few psn plus was good on ps4 outlast and resogun being the best so far.
Ms has been far more consistent and better it's not about aaa games for me but games which are worth playing , personally I think Sony are resting on laurels and abusing there market doninance.
@SmashbrosFtw1306 I do own an Xbox and a Playstation and whilst their line up is better this month, it really isn't this amazing service to be jealous of like everyone is making out.
@Spooke2k @SmashbrosFtw1306 Like what? What's so much better? Come on - back up your claims.
Gotta agree really, having looked at MS's offerings they are hardly blowing PS's out of the park either, although I would say they are taking the edge with the likes of Banner Saga 2 and Sunset Overdrive but there really isn't anything else that stands out, and you could argue Rocket Leauge trumps these two anyway.
Of course it's a nice bonus for XB gamers that they get to keep the game regardless of maintaining a subscription
Tricky Towers looks pretty fun, will download that. Rebel Galaxy looks bad, but I think Ultratron looks alright. Probably will only download Tricky Towers. Better than Table Top Racing: World Tour at least.
@get2sammyb I didn't mean to upset you please calm down I can understand how me sounding like a Microsoft robot may annoy so I apologise .
However as with all things it's obviously down to personal preference I'm lucky I own both consoles so I compare each month but for me here's what I have liked on Xbox and downloaded. And the backwards compatibility has given me option of playing old games on Xbox one as my kids stole my 360 and I sold my old PS3 so lot of ps plus is useless to me now.
