Gran Turismo Sport has been delayed to 2017, with developer Polyphony Digital stating that it needs more time to perfect the title.
Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi made the announcement on the PlayStation Blog and said: "As we approach our planned release date in November, we realise that we need more time to perfect GT Sport, which we've already dedicated so much effort towards since announcing the title. We do not want to compromise the experience in any way."
A new release date has not been given beyond just next year, however the game will continue to be featured at gaming conventions around the world. We expect an information blowout at TGS next month.

Wouldn't be a PS4 exclusive without at least one delay...
I'll never understand why they didn't rename Evolution Studios to Polyphony Digital UK and put them on the Gran Turismo series as a satellite studio. They could have helped model cars, done all of the audio work, and contributed to the tech behind the series.
Would have resulted in major improvements to the quality of the products, and could have helped Polyphony get stuff done on time.
Alas...
Another Big Japanese Game delayed Whatever shall i do.
Persona 5 still on for the 15th Sep?
My engine just ran out of fuel. PS4 is definatly started to be known as the generation where titles are getting delayed on a constant basis. 2017 Has some decent games coming out so will probably give this a miss.
as i said when FFXV was delayed
I'm fine with it, i would rather have a game delayed and finished rather than rushed and broken
I'm not that fuss that it's being delayed as there's still plenty of great titles coming out this year.
@KratosMD Turn 10 actually outsource and stuff, though. Polyphony Digital are literally a dinosaur who refuse external support, even though it's obvious to everyone but them that they're really falling behind the times.
Their only saving grace is that Gran Turismo is still, by far, the best selling racing game property on the planet. I don't know how much longer that can last while the series is perpetually mismanaged like this, though.
Kinda happy. Too many games this winter I'm wanting, a nice early 2017 will do nicely.
@get2sammyb "Wouldn't be a PS4 exclusive without at least one delay..."
Hey now, don't go leaving FFXV out in the cold.
I think instead of "exclusive" you should say "game you've actually heard of" b/c only small non-promoted games release w/o delay. And M#9 was delayed enough for all indies combined on every system as well. Even freakin' Yooka-Laylee was delayed from Oct 16 to 17.
"If you've heard of it, it's probably been delayed" 8th Gen creed. (Or are we in 9th gen, I always miscount?)
@FullbringIchigo very true, Polish this turd till it shines, would be good for Polyphony Digital to actually listen to the community and makes this series be at least on par with Assetto Corsa and Project Cars, nevermind competing with Forza.
This is probably the least surprising news ever.
I called this back when it was first announced, so no surprise here. I'm sure it will be worth the wait like GT5 was though. Hell, just give us GT6 for PS4 in the mean time and I'll be crazy happy.
Smart move,winter release window is rammed this year
No suprise there... I will probably give it a miss too as I'm not really hyped for this. I think DriveClub will go down as the definitive PS4 racing experience.
@get2sammyb Maybe Sony felt that the resources weren't justified to keep that studio going, besides they don't really do sister studios to their already established ones. Even Guerrilla Cambridge are making their own stuff.
Other than launch titles and i might be right in saying Bloodborne every other exclusive that wasn't remake has been delayed
@get2sammyb I completely agree Sammy there should have been a Driveclub 2.
@KratosMD Just do like 100 plus great looking cars and leave out the 5 different versions of a car.
@B-I-G-DEVIL At least Sony have the nerve to hold games back to make them better which sadly other publishers are unwilling to do.
Conspiracy theorist here. If the Neo does get a hardware upgrade because of the scorpios' reported specs wouldn't GT Sport be the perfect launch title?
@seanobi Cerny never said game development would be speedier, he said "time to triangle" is quicker compared to PS3. That means that devs can get prototypes up and running much faster because the hardware is easier to work with, and it's true.
It doesn't account for the significantly more challenging development cycles, though. Games are much, much, much more complex now than they were even last generation, and that takes time.
Obviously Polyphony Digital is heavily mismanaged, but I'm talking about PS4 development in general. No one lied to you, it's just games are harder to make.
No drama, it gives me more time to put pennies in a jar for a Thrustmaster wheel.
@KratosMD I don't know about forza, although forza game is good, it sold less and less each installment, people just don't buy racing game annually, I thinks it better to make racing game every 5 year but support it with dlc until the sequel arrive, like blizzard do with their property (diablo series, starcraft series, etc).
I do hope polyphony for once see the advancement on others racing games, like driveclub graphics and sound and compared it to gran tourismo.
@Tye180 On par with asseto corsa? The game's got 5 on pushsquare and 4 on destructoid
@JoeBlogs Yeah, if polyphony release it in unfinished state it will be another driveclub and street fighter 5, a good game that can be great. But if they delay it and the game is great, nobody will remember the delay.
Well you know what they say, Greatness Awaits (it will never stop being relevant) I was expecting this, at least it's not as bad as GT5... Yet.
@get2sammyb
"could have helped Polyphony get stuff done on time." Several delays for Driveclub, then several delays for the Plus Edition. Put a pair of mismanaged studios together and you just add to the mess, they should actually find a studio who can do stuff on time.
@get2sammyb Wait a minute..exactly how is Polyphony "obviously poorly mismanaged"? And do you forget the debacle that was drive club at launch? The game that was supposed to be free, and then wasnt. And I know pushsquare.com is real hot on that game, but as a car enthusiast and racing enthusiast, I can say the game leaves a lot to be desired.
@Fenriswolf- Have you followed Gran Turismo since the PS2 days? If so, I don't know how anyone could come to the assumption they're not poorly managed.
And yes, Evolution mucked up the launch of DriveClub. Polyphony's mucked up much more than that.
Well that's my Christmas screwed. Its meant to be at egx - that puts a damper on my time there too.
Called it. It's still annoying to get it officially confirmed though. Gravity Rush 2 and The Last Guardian is left now.
@themcnoisy Will still be at EGX.
Who didn't see that coming, raise your hand. 😂
Microsoft is able to pump out an AAA racer every year........Sony, take some ques.
@adf86 I can accept that now and again but numerous 'big' titles every year is getting rather annoying now. Don't commit to dates can't keep and it's always the 'Holiday' releases as well
Most surprising part for me is that Sony is still accepting this instead of having a proper studio like Turn 10.
I am happy with my XBox One, which I bought because I love to race without having to much headache (no real sim racers for me).
I have my PS4 from launch but there is still no game like Forza on it, shame, shame shame.
How many big games does the PS4 have left this year? I don't mind delays, but at this point every major title is slated for 2017. I can understand some frustration.
GT Sport gets delayed into 2017 the same day Forza Horizon 3 goes gold (and we get confirmation the Warthog from Halo is in the game).
Sounds about right.
@seanobi F1 2016 is pretty good IMO.
@B-I-G-DEVIL Holiday releases are stupid anyway, why release a big exclusive at a time when everyone is buying CoD or Battlefield? It makes no financial sense, hence why Sony have pulled Uncharted, The Order, Infamous , Horizon and now GT Sport from previous holiday dates.
@Kohaku Considering Gran Turismo is their biggest IP I think Sony are quite content with not having a so called "proper studio".
@Dermeister Most of their big titles are already out, like I've said many times before they don't need any big releases in the holidays because marketing CoD and Watch Dogs 2 will shift consoles for them far more then most of their exclusives.
@adf86 Not everyone plays them games but I know what you mean. That's what I'm getting at though. They announce for Holiday to drive consloe sales post E3 then release following year. Rinse and repeat, next years will be Days Gone and Detroit.
@Kohaku
Amen, these PS fanboys have no clue how good the Forza >((Horizon))< series is........poor souls.
Gran Turismo + Delayed, hmm i have never seen those words in the same sentence before Shame that But I still got LOADS to play this year already so I am ok with this News.
@get2sammyb Cool good to know!
@sub12 For me I don't need too because I can play Driveclub, Project Cars, F1 2016 and Dirt Rally for my racing fix before GT arrives.
@sub12 @Kohaku To be fair, though, I'm not really sure what Forza Horizon has to do with Gran Turismo?
I wish GT could get back on track. DriveClub is good, but it's no driving sim.
@JoeBlogs No, it was revealed there would be a pay and free after they announced it being a free launch title..like way later after the delay.
@get2sammyb Alot of people compare the two as if they are competitors. Yeah that are both racing games but that's like saying Streets of Rage and Street Fighter 2 are competitors. Yeah they are both fighting games but aimed at different audiences.
@get2sammyb No, I've been following since PS1 days actually. The first GT and on. And I've commented on this very topic before- There is much more that goes into the modelling of the cars physics than other games. Such as testing them on tracks and so on. It takes more time. It's quick and easy to model the appearance of a car, like in drive club, and that's also why the game feels like an arcade game. For those who require more from their racing games, it leaves a lot to be desired. I will agree that it's annoying to have to wait for them to release, but I'm happy with the results when they do. But this doesn't mean they are mismanaged.
@adf86 That's true. Although it honestly wouldn't hurt to have something else in the closing months.
@sub12 I really want to play Forza, but I've never been able to have an Xbox for an extended period of time. It wasn't my console, it was on the fritz, or something. Being a racing fan, it's definitely on my radar.
@get2sammyb
Well, besides being a better series, Microsoft's approach to racing game development, be it the sim Forza or the more casual Horizon, put shame to the many missteps of the GT series in the last 10 years.
I was afraid of that....but meanwhile I will be playing with driveclub vr so no big deal. Today I tested it at local retailer and was really enjoying it. Already preordered
It's definitely sad to see this get delayed, but if it makes the game better, then so be it. I honestly have been meaning to go back and play Forza 6 more, plus Horizon 3 is coming out soon, so I'm actually not too bothered by this. Definitely looking forward to hearing more about the game.
Gran tourism games have disappointed since 3, and since they seem reluctant to actually make any real improvements, maybe they decided to delay it and make it not suck? Nah, wishful thinking at best.
In the meantime xbox got plenty of Forzas....
DelayStation Neo
I played Forza 2 and 3 and they're good games but on the more arcadey type of racer, I thought. I much prefer the GT series.
@sub12 I do love the customization options of Forza, such as motor swaps, drive train swaps, etc. The ability to change wheel widths is huge for me as well. But it doesn't come anywhere close to GT for realism of driving physics. There's a reason real racecar drivers are made from GT every year.
Pre-order has been cancelled by Sony although on a separate note... have developers not heard of working overtime?
@Fenriswolf-
C'mon buddy, you can tell me when you got hired by the Sony marketing team....
@sub12 haha say what?? Surely you are aware of GT Academy...? If not, then ya need to do some research
The next GT game is DELAYED?
NO WAY....
lol
@SPGFan34 I'd argue Project Cars is a much better racing game. Driveclub is good fun, and i enjoyed it, but it didn't feel right in terms of actual racing. For me anyway.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Sure:
a) The Last Guardian
b) The Last Guardian
c) The Last Guardian
Usually delays annoy me but Gran Turismo has been surpassed by Forza a long time ago and with Horizon 2, Motorsport 6 and I'm going to assume Horizon 3, GT has been lapped at this point. The delay is a good thing because it creates an opportunity to scrap the 'Sport' subtitle, make this GT 7 and hopefully make the series one of the top in the genre again. One thing that really sets the two series apart is also the passion for car culture that Turn 10 and Playground Games both have. It'd be nice if Polyphony can give GT some 'personality' beyond being just a 'driving simulator.' I'm 33 if I want to simulate driving I'll just get in my car.
@DerMeister
The Last Guardian and Gravity Rush 2 are still set for this year. Maybe not 'big' games but still it's something. I expect GR 2 to be much better than many of the 'big' games. Also, for PS4-only players, there is Rise of the Tomb Raider which should count as a big release. I understand the frustration as well, but it's still been a good year for PS4 and there's still some stuff left. I will say, however, as I've said since 2013, MS does have the superior holiday lineup.
@Gamer83
I love how the Sony crowd gets all butt hurt about Forza/Forza Horizon being better, but well, it's true.
GT has lost it's clout since the PS3 days.
@sub12 sigh.. here ya go, I'm sure ya didn't go educate yourself. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/GT_Academy
I don't mind. I trust PD whole-heartedly with the next couple months.
@Fenriswolf-
Who cares!!?? Doesn't change the fact that the series has been in decline and wanning in importance since post-GT4.
@Gamer83
Agree, Gravity Rush 2 still looks pretty amazing.
@sub12 Hahaha i knew you'd respond with something like that. The point is, Forza has no such clout. It's only declining in your opinion, but not in reality. And the game being delayed is no indication that it is...if thats what this rant is all about. But the series is not in any decline, if it was, it wouldn't have strategic partnerships with almost every major auto manufacturer to create cars just for the game. It wouldn't have GT Academy every year and have its name in all major motorsports. Forza is a fun game, but is not a replacement for GT to any real car or racing enthusiast.
@Fenriswolf-
Sony bucks must go a long way!!
Regardless, the uber super-duper hardcore 3% of GT players doesn't change the fact that it's inferior to Forza.
Of course, Top Gear on the SNES is better than both combined.
@sub12 hahahaha oh boy...
@Fenriswolf-
Honestly, what can beat this?
https://youtu.be/xpUZYWX2BoY
@Gamer83 I admittedly forgot about Gravity Rush 2. Gotta play the first one. Last Guardian I'm not too interested in though.
Part of the reason I asked is due to my internet shutting down for months, I've been out of the loop. Seems like the major releases so far get nothing but delays to next year though. But it looks like some good stuff came out between May and August- Guilty Gear, KOF, Mirror's Edge and Deus Ex all came out during my downtime.
@sub12 No doubt it's nostalgic! Haha, and thanks for the stroll down memory lane, I haven't heard that in forever!
@get2sammyb @Tasuki "To be fair, though, I'm not really sure what Forza Horizon has to do with Gran Turismo?"
The answer is because we can't have gran turismo thread without forza fan claiming forza games is better. While in the reality each forza sequel sold less and less, meaning most people think forza isn't better than gran turismo.
@wiiware
BTW, did you know that Forza is better than GT, and Horizon is probably the most purely fun racing series of the last 10 years?
Did you also know that Microsoft doesn't take four years and numerous delays to crank out a quality title? It's called efficiency Sony.
@sub12 That's not a fact, it's just your opinion.
@ApostateMage
My opinion is fact, Sammy told me so.
