Brace yourself, because you're getting two PlayStation press conferences next month. In addition to the previously revealed PlayStation Meeting show on 7th September, the platform holder has also confirmed that it will be taking to the stage on 13th September in Japan for its annual pre-Tokyo Game Show event.
The presser will kick off at 14:00PM local time, which is about 08:00AM BST, and will presumably include updates on Japanese centric titles such as New Hot Shots Golf, Dragon Quest XI, and perhaps even Final Fantasy VII Remake. The last couple of these have been pretty good, so we're looking forward to seeing what Sony's got in store.
Are there any dream reveals that you've got your fingers crossed for? This author would personally love to see a Bloodborne sequel confirmed, as well as some gameplay footage of Shenmue III – but we're not sure how likely either of those are. Still, two PlayStation press conferences in one month – September is going to be a helluva ride.

Do you think they'll officially confirm PSX 2016 at the event on the 7th?
@sajoey Not sure, they might do, but it seems more like something they'll do on the PlayStation Blog closer to the time.
@get2sammyb I dunno man, they're being awfully slow with it. By this time last year they had announced it in its entireity.
@sajoey Had they? I'm sure it's coming, maybe they just feel like they have bigger fish to fry at the moment. I'm sure it's all hands on deck behind the scenes.
@get2sammyb they had indeed: https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2015/08/major_ps4_announcements_to_air_at_playstation_experience_2015 though I'm sure with at least 2 conferences coming up, along with all the leaks, it is very hectic.
isnt sony japan studio supposedly working on a big jrpg?
"Are there any dream reveals that you've got your fingers crossed for?"
I hope Sony reveals the NX since Nintendo is never going to.
@WebHead Yeah, that's been a persistent rumour from some people. There's no real evidence to back it up, though...
Price blowout for Vita memory! Drop the mic.
Awesome news about the presser. Love a good presser. Presser presser presser presser.
@kyleforrester87 Wrote it specially for you.
Personally I only interested in the Neo hardware at the moment - price, specs and release date. As for games, Horizon, Spider-man, Days Gone, Hellblade etc are all of interest but wouldn't mind seeing a few surprise announcements - maybe RDR...
@BAMozzy Speaking of surprise announcements, since you're my goto tech guy, any thoughts on Vita 2, aka Trinity? I think Sony is too smart to reuse the Vita name, but also too smart to let remote play die.
@rjejr @BAMozzy I'd like to think that Sony's too smart to not make another handheld!
More gravity rush 2, more dragon quest, more persona ahead of its release and most importantly more ni no kuni 2 please!!!!
@get2sammyb good stuff, you'd be hard pressed to find a word as impressive as presser. Press press press.
I want 20 new IPs from Sony announced at TGS, or else I'm selling my PS4!!
I'll be keeping my crosse, in hope that in TGS they would also localize most of their games to the west. The good ones, of course, not the niche ones.
@Grawlog "dedicated short-range"
I don't think it needs to be short range, WiFi works pretty well these days. And Sony is probably doing something w/ those 5GH patents.
And this old patent. "handheld as a remote"
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2012/02/sony_patented_a_wii_u_style_controller_too
@Grawlog And I probably should have linked to this article where it sort of all began. Maybe you can start holding your breath now.

@ShogunRok "I'd like to think that Sony's too smart to not make another handheld!"
Is that "not" a typo? B/c 2 weeks ago you said the exact opposite of how that sentence reads -
"No market for another dedicated handheld, it doesn't exist. Sony would be mad, quite frankly."
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2016/08/a_new_ps_vita_is_on_the_way_dont_believe_everything_you_read
@Octane I guess it's goodbye then.
@rjejr Yeah, I mean Sony is surely not dumb enough to produce another handheld at this point in time.
@Grawlog 3DS or not, I just don't think there's room for a dedicated handheld platform (as we know them) at this point in time, which is a shame, but it's the truth. Maybe later down the line things will change.
@ShogunRok @rjejr I personally think its a difficult one. I don't necessary think its a given that Sony will continue with a handheld - at least not in the traditional sense.
Sony has said they can't compete with he mobile market and haven't supported the Vita very well and hasn't shown much interest in developing games for that so I think they maybe spreading themselves a little thin with the PS4, VR and a hand held.
@ShogunRok You know, there's an edit button at the bottom of your post.
I reread your post 5x, and it really looks like you expect them to make a new handheld, especially w/ the ! after handheld for emphasis.
Maybe another handheld would be stupid, but a dedicated "remote play" controller that lets you play anywhere, like the DS4 dongle on PC, seems to make sense. Or at least package a DS4 w/ an Xperia tablet for PS Now. Of course, if you are going to make that bundle, then why not just make 1 device?
The problem w/ Vita was it played games similar to PS3, but not PS3 games. Make a portable PS4 that actually plays PS4 games, even via the cloud, no separate game line, now your talking. Of course your talking about NX, but you're still talking.
@BAMozzy "spreading themselves a little thin"
Way thin, PS4 slim, PSVR and Neo.
OK, how about a repackaged PSTV bundled w/ a DS4 for remote play on TVs?
So, um, finally decided to do some actual research on my own, and Sony is already spreading themselves thin on the "remote play" front - PC, TV, on the go.
https://www.playstation.com/en-ae/explore/ps4/features/remote-play/
And what I've decided is that this is one of the worst gaming device designs I've ever seen.
So I'm going back to my original idea. Make a DS4 w/ 3 things:
1. a screen built in for gaming on the go over WiFi,
2. HDMI dongle for streaming to a TV over WiFi
3. Touchscreen so it can be used as a 2nd normal DS4 controller
And that is why they call it "Trinity", remote, portable, 2nd controller. Maybe I'll call it DS4 LiveStream instead of PS4 LiveStream?
Going back to your point about spreading themselves to thin, maybe save this for next E3.
@rjejr Of course the actual 'specs' of the NX isn't confirmed but its unlikely to meet the PS4 in terms of potential raw power - especially if it goes with the Tegra 1 set up as rumoured. Its more likely to play PS3 type games upscaled to 1080p rather than PS4 type games. As you can see there is a gulf between Uncharted Nathan Drake collection and Uncharted 4!
@BAMozzy But my DS4 LiveStream won't "play" PS4 games, just stream them from a home owned PS4, PS4 Slim or PS4 Neo (that's a lot of PS4 to stream from) so I don't think it needs as much power as NX, just really good 5GH WiFi. Unless I'm entirely wrong about that. Gamepad played Wii U games just fine and that was basically an empty shell. OK, a $100 empty shell. But that's what I'm thinking about, a PS4 Gamepad controller, over WiFi, w/ TV out. Maybe $150?
@rjejr "I hope Sony reveals the NX since Nintendo is never going to." This!
@rjejr
Sony does what Nintendon't...
@Grawlog
Did someone say Monster Hunter?
Where
@JaxonH PSVR first person MH. We'd never see you again.
@rjejr
"Monster Hunter VR"
I'd never need another video game again.
Not ever.
C'mon Bloodborne 2!
@WebHead Since it's been a while since they've announced a game and they usually release multiple games a year, I think it's fairly likely they'll announce a new game at TGS, even if it's not an RPG.
Well FFVIIR and DQXI are two of my most anticipated games of all time, along with Torment: Tides of Numenera. Any news of those two games will be very welcome. I'd really like to see some party members for DQXI and some footage of the world map. I want that amazing DQVIII feeling of exploring a vast, beautiful world back.
@BAMozzy Well in that case, NX will be even worse than the gap between those two since the Nathan Drake Collection wasn't just upscaled to 1080p, that was its native resolution. It also has new models and textures and runs at double the framerate, amongst other things. Does PS Now upscale the games? If so, playing UC1-3 on there and comparing it to UC4 would be a better comparison relating to what you're describing.
@Matroska It was still upscaled and compared to the U4, the differences are significant. OK they added a bit more textures etc to it. Bluepoint upscaled the game from 720p and added a few new textures etc.
The point I was trying to make was the difference between what was possible on PS3 and what is possible on PS4. The Tegra 1 plays games like Doom 3 - BFG edition at 1080p but couldn't play Doom (2016) - certainly not at 1080/60p. The Tegra 1 couldn't play games like Arkham Knight but could play Arkham Asylum at 1080p. All games were upscaled to 1080p if you owned a 1080p TV even if the native was 720p (or less) otherwise the game wouldn't fill the screen.
I tried to pick games though that PS owners will already own. I was trying to show that the NX is between the PS3 and PS4 in terms of power IF it uses the Tegra 1 chip - that it could play PS3 games at 1080p - the extra power used to up the native resolution of those games - but not powerful enough to play the quality of games we see on the PS4 at the standards we see. Its possible that it could play some games at lower native resolutions and/or frame rates of course - that could depend on how much RAM and the bandwidth etc.
Point is that the NX fits somewhere between last gen (PS3/XB360) and this gen (PS4/XB1) based on the initial leak BUT that could still change as their are rumours that Nintendo could use the new Tegra X2 chip - especially with the release date and rumours of VR too which would bring it closer to the PS4 in terms of potential.
@JaxonH You would need 1 of these hats though.
And maybe 1 of these - hard to find the restroom w/ a VR headset on.
@BAMozzy I take your point overall but I'm just saying that upscaling is different from something running natively at that resolution. You could go and get a screenshot of a SNES game now, resize it to 4K in Photoshop, and there you have an upscaled image. That's obviously different from redrawing all the graphical assets at 4K.
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1861275/upscaling-fullscreen-difference.html
Like I said, using your earlier comparisons and descriptions, a more accurate reference would be Uncharted 1-3 on PS Now where you actually have an upscaled UC. That's not that impressive at all.
The problem Nintendo face is that if whatever they do can't run multi-platform games on a level equal to the PS4, they're just making another Wii U. In fact, even worse because this is coming off the back of years of failure and obscurity. Being able to run upscaled decades old games (or things that look like that) is nowhere near good enough.
Then even if it was equal to the PS4, bear in mind that that's still not that great and was seen as underpowered back when this gen started, only being capable of running The Witcher 3 on medium settings at 1080p at about 25fps average. Hence the upgrades that are on their way for PS4 and XB1 and that's what the NX will really be getting compared to.
That also means in about 3-4 years or so, the next gen will be about to start, at least getting hyped up, so you'll have this underpowered thing being outclassed by its competitors for a few years before PS5 comes out. It's perhaps the worse timing possible for them.
@Matroska I believe Nntendo are going to release a console that at best matches the current gen hardware in terms of power/performance. In a lot of ways it will be reminiscent of the Wii U as well as the Wii too. A console that can't match the big 'two' at a straight out console fight (so to speak) but will offer something uniquely Nintendo. If reports are anything to go by, the NX is more a handheld than a console anyway - a replacement to both the 3DS and Wii U all in one. Price could also be a big factor too. If Nintendo get the 'right' price, this could sell a LOT more console than both Sony and MS manage - just think how many 3DS's they have sold. So it may not play a game like the Witcher 3 at the resolution/frame rate we had on the PS4, or it ends up playing a few last gen games at better resolution - it will be able to do this on the go.
Games like the new Zelda, looking better and playing better on the NX - but playable on aTV or anywhere you want. Its that uniquely Nintendo approach that could see it struggle like the Wii U or flourish like the Wii.
