You've really got to feel for… Whoever the developer behind Verdun is. The team behind this World War I flavoured first-person shooter probably thought that it had come up with something original by turning back time all the way to 1914, only for Battlefield 1 to come and do the exact same thing with a bigger budget.
And if that wasn't bad enough, it picked the same release date as the aforementioned blockbuster's public beta. Talk about bad luck! Fortunately, this does do a lot to differentiate itself from DICE's more Hollywood-inspired adaptation of the Great War, shunning set-pieces and spectacle in favour of slower paced, strategic shootouts.
The main mode, Frontlines, is particularly tactical, assigning you to a squad in which you'll need to fulfil your role if your team intends to take territory from the enemy. You can even level up different platoons with your buddies, and unlock new abilities as a result. There are more traditional deathmatch modes, though, for those of you who want them.
Whichever playlist you select, however – including the co-op option – you should expect a more methodical experience here. We didn't spend an enormous span of time with the title, but it's definitely slower than your average FPS, favouring considered tactics and a steady hand. It's good if you're into that sort of thing.
It's just a shame the performance isn't really up to par. The game looks dreary, which we suppose is an accurate representation of trench-life, but its performance is similarly sluggish, dropping frames and tearing heavily when the action intensifies. It doesn't control quite as tightly as we'd like either, to be honest.

Ahh Buses, this, battlefield and also battalion out next year probably too. Really like the looks of this actually, I think I'll pick it up. titans cods and ea can wait. The slower pace more realistic and tactical gameplay perfectly sits along side destiny as something to chomp on now and then, cheese and pickles.
It must be terrible to have to compete with one of the biggest franchises out there and in the same theme too. It's like when Tomb Raider released the same day as GTA V, only worse.
@get2sammyb Is there offline splitscreen and if so hOW many players?
Not sure about offline but its 2-32 players online. Its about 1/4 price of Battlefield 1. Its currently on offer for £11.99 and full price at £15 which to be honest is a good price. Its never going to be as polished as other titles but for the price I think that is to be expected. I am expecting this to be a lot more challenging and unforgving than run and gun FPS. Currently downloading this game now.
I have it on PC and the gameplay really took a turn for the worse there. People are just often running about or camping the whole game, leaving the few players that want an authentic play style (as was in the very beginning) just dying all the time. I want to pick it up for ps4, but I'm fearing the same thing when I saw this dude with the lmg spraying all over the trench on his own. And I also fear the player base will drop too fast and after all it relies heavily on well filled servers.
@Tasuki You can play the co-op mode offline, but it doesn't look like there's any split-screen options.
@RoadsidePicnic I think this is the big worry with a game like this. Right now, I had no problem getting a game in any of the modes, but that could change once the big fall releases come out.
First impressions I like the setting of the game and its not your typical run and gun FPS. The game is hard especially because I could not find an option to turn voice chat on. Without that it feels like not matter how much hard work you put in your can not communicate it with your squad. Being commander is fine but found I was getting myself killed while giving orders which my squad ignored anyway. I think this game is best played with people you know and being able to chat. This game is s different in feel and play to either battlefield or COD that I think the community will stay loyal to it. Maybe not in huge numbers because it will never have that player base in the first instance but enough to not struggle to find players.
I played this game for a few hours yesterday, and I am pretty impressed with it for the price. It demands patience, thought and tactics. Just sprinting across no man's land is a sure way to get killed. Was only a couple of hundred players on when I was playing which was immediately after the store updated but had no trouble finding a game. The only problem I had was getting into a match with my friend (although when I did get in I was on the opposite team, much to his dismay as I kept blowing his head off)
Hey Sammy, maybe I blew your head off at one point too, since every match I kept encountering the same players so a god chance you were one of my victims
Only thing right now is, machine guns dominate. Of course they were to be feared in WW1, but the fact they can mow down wave after wave of enemies with the same accuracy as a rifle but higher fire rate is a bit annoying when I am trying to creep forwards with a bolt action or pistol but other than that, a good little game.
Patience? Tactics?! Sounds like counter-strike! Might give this a go!
been playing this for about 2 hours now and loving it being a bit of a ww1 history buff was expecting the worst but its good for the price its very good
Oh it is definitely NOT Counter Strike, R6 Siege i the closest you'll get to that on console (actually a really good game, picked it up in the last EU sale), but it's not your typical run and gun shooter either. Sometimes you have to wait a minute or two for a problematic sniper to reveal their position and land the one shot you are likely to get before they reposition before you advance. Verdun is not for those who are all about explosive, fast paced action. You have to wait for an opportunity and then capitalise on it, if you don't, then you will lose. And rest assured even a single player thinking strategically can turn the tide by establishing a foothold (especially an NCO).
@fairliedaft Totally agree, played the Battlefield 1 demo last night and was so disappointed, I gave this a go and was really impressed, exactly want I want from a FPS, I loved the slow thoughtful play, think I will be playing this for a long time to come.
Played this game after BF1. BF1 seems like a light hearted play when you want to/quit when you want to type of game. There's really nothing sucking me in to want to play more. The way Verdun was set up with CO's and weapon unlocks is way more rewarding. Although the graphics are not as great, there is a more authentic feel to the WWI genre. My only complaint is that the game runs slow with huge frame drops and tearing. It feels like it's running inefficiently. For example, I find a great nesting spot and see people in the distance running across the field. I lock on but the cross hairs are jittery. Makes it difficult. I find you almost have to aim and wait for someone to come across your crosshairs. Fighting in the trenches is actually easier because you don't have to aim as much. (I was able to kill 5 enemies in a row with a bolt action with quick aim.) If they fix the connectivity issues to their servers, I can see myself playing this game a lot more. (U.S. Servers)
