This video's going to get swiped pretty quickly if Digital Foundry's clip is anything to go by, but we'll report on it while it's live: the PlayStation 4 Slim comes with an updated DualShock 4 controller. While it looks identical in terms of form factor, there's a light been added to the touchpad. Yeah, we've no idea why either, but there you go.
The controller looks identical in terms of ergonomics, but it's probably safe to assume that other minor tweaks have been made to the innards if this added LED is any indication. Could it have improved battery life? We're sure that you'll appreciate that all of this information is leaking in drips and drabs, but we'll keep you updated as and when we learn more.

I'd imagine they would fix the thumbstick problems first.
Trying to think of any reason that a light would be added to the touchpad of the DS4. People were complaining about the light reflecting from tv screens and now we have one front and center in our face. Strange things going on....
Interesting.
Makes sense, you can't really see the light if you're the one holding the controller so this will make it more visible to the player to see for the few games that actually use it for added effects(like Transistor did) .
Maybe it has something to do with VR
Longer battery life and the option to turn off, not dim, any lights that i do not want on would be a big upgrade to the DS4.
Controller looks like complete trash now. Please be 2 oppositions.
@JaxonH That's not 1 of the improvements you were looking for, was it?
Don't worry, Neo will get the good controller.
What's next? LEDs in the face buttons for NEO?
I guess the positive thing is that you can't loose it anymore in a dark room..
The lights are useless. I wish I could turn them off. I love the PS4 controller other than that.
@rjejr
I've been begging Sony for years to add a light to my touchpad. I must thank them for this glorious revelation of ingenuity.
I just want better battery..
Battery light would be useful especially since it doesn't last too long
Its gotta be something to do with VR, for recognising those using a controller with it... Otherwise makes no sense whatsoever
At this rate Sony will cough out a DS4 that lights up all over! Lol that's my only complaint about the DS4. The damn light bar and how you can't shut it off.
By the time Neo gets announced the Dual Shock 4 will just be a light bulb.
That light on top is an AMAZING idea I think I always thought it was a bit pointless that I couldn't see the light while playing a game without turning the controller around. I love that New feature + i hope the left stick is stronger and the battery last longer to then it would be the best controller ever.
Pity I wanted one without any of the silly lights!!! Don't understand why Sony have made a slim etc, if they have taken the optic lead away then it's just sounding cheaper and more horrible, I know Xbox have the slim but that's got improvements... This seems all to desperate in my eyes from Sony.
@Neolit Bingo, it's a cost cutting measures I think, I hope ps4 slim is $250 so more people can play ps4 games.
@JaxonH Ask and you shall receive
Be nice if Sony were to add something similar to XBone trigger resistance too as well as bolstering the battery life. I like the PS4 controller in general but in comparison to the XBone effort it feels cheap and lightweight. Definitely not the best for when you've been playing the same b*stard hard level on Trials Fusion for 17 hours straight, errrrrrrrrr.........
The only 'light' I would accept on the top of the controller would be the PS Logo glowing a different colour instead of (or as well as - but dim-able) the light bar. The two 'main' improvements needed are 'build quality' (triggers, thumbsticks etc) and battery life - or maybe a battery compartment and rechargeable battery packs - like MS - that way you can play with normal batteries (which last a LOT longer) or a rechargeable pack. Then when the rechargeable pack has lost its ability to hold a charge as long, its cheaper to replace than a controller if you still want 'wireless'...
I still hope Sony will come out with its own 'Elite' style controller!
The battery life is dissapointing I might as well have a wired controller for the amount of times I have it plugged in. The option to turn off the LED would be the best option rather than just dimming. Why is the picture taken in a car? The mystery with this photo keeps gettig stranger by the minutes.
More durable triggers and less noisy face buttons please! The PS3 controller never gave me any problems like the PS4 controller has.
So will this new controller replace the current one eventually?
@JaxonH "to add a light to my touchpad"
I think you can probably get that surgery done in some back alley in the Orient.
@WanderingBullet Presumably, yes.
Now the controller can become a lightSaber in PSVR, at least for Darth Maul. Need to add a third light for Kyle Ren.
"there's a light been added to the touchpad. Yeah, we've no idea why either, but there you go"
I don't think it's a new light, just the light from the front of the old controller been moved to the top so you can see the glow better?
All I want is a bigger battery in it.
Another light, the touchpad is pretty useless anyway, so I guess they added a light to make it look pretty.
What a wasted opportunity. Shrink the almost useless touchpad, add real "options" and "share" buttons instead of those narrow cavities, give it a larger battery, and make the thumbsticks more resilient. I'll definitely buy that version of the controller.
