Sony has released PlayStation 4 firmware update v4.00, which brings with it hotly anticipated features like folders and a spruced up user interface. The patch weighs in at 312MB in total, so if you don't have the fastest Internet connection, you may want to turn on your console on a few minutes before you intend to play, as you will need it installed to connect to the PlayStation Network. Alternatively, you could just slap your system in Rest Mode.
We'll have tons of coverage on PS4 firmware update v4.00 over the course of the day, so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, feel free to share your first impressions on the firmware in the comments section below.

I was in the beta. Decent update. Folders certainly tidy the screen. Nice addition.
So does this make games have HDR?
Still no custom backgrounds?
found some nice little touches. the PSN Store now has the animated Background (no longer static. but one thing that bugs me is that FOLDERS. you cant have the same game in 2 different folders. so if you want an all Games folder, and then make 2-3 smaller folders for PSplus, Digital and Retail, well you cant.
some other subtle changes are:
you no longer press Options to clear an installed download, you need to press X then clear.
the Loading icon is now either the shape button logos either in a square or a line.
the game overview is totally redone and is great
the pop up is white not black.
and the button help at the bottom is clear
and the rest is shown. great update.
@goonow no it means the system can output hdr if a game chooses to output in that format.
Just downloaded it there, the new quick menu is great. Not all that impressed with the folders option, I wish it was more like the TV & Video app where you can scroll up and down and not just across a long list, which was the reason people wanted folders in the first place. Also liking the new overview for games.
@Dr4gonkiller96 I think you don't grasp the concept of folders if you want to have one game in two of them
Brilliant no more clutter.
First impressions are really good! I like the new profile banner images (I've gone with a screenshot from The Witness for now) and the general UI tidy up looks much smarter.
Not too sure about What's New. It had been playing up for me anyway, showing me the same, weeks old stuff constantly. It's not a feature I use too much so I'm not that bothered by the changes there.
Love the new quick menu. Haven't had much of a chance to play with it yet but it looks really nice.
What's everyone been doing with their folders? I've put all the apps I don't use in one, then disc games, PSN games, and Multiplayer. I'll probably change my mind a million times, but pretty much everything is sorted at the moment. Very useful addition
@KomrathDE the Icons are just Shortcuts. I want lets say, Journey a PSPLUS game. I want 2 folders named Digital and PSplus. Because Journey is Both i want to put it in both. Get what im saying.
Ahh what a feeling of being able to put my Games into Folders I really enjoyed that Seems a good update so far.
Nice, look forward to trying it.
I put all App's together, all FPS together, all Adventure Games together, all Indies together, all RPG's together, like that it's a lot better. The update is really good it now looks a lot smarter, love the update myself.
I keep getting messages that there are new posts in community's I'm not even apart of. Not a huge deal but kinda of annoying.
@Splat I got that too. Very strange.
says it needs to restart to install but just turns off
@stevie85 Yeah I was in the beta too. Have you noticed any additional features yet?
Best thing - the X, O, square and triangle buttons spinning have replaced the boring lines when anything is loading. Small detail but satisfying!
Biggest gripe - Folders/games can't be made sticky
@BowTiesAreCool Not yet. Just mostly the same stuff that was in the beta really.
Nice but the new profile layout is horrible why did they do that
you can now stream in 60fps which is nice
@goonow The ability to play games with HDR has been added but as far as I know, no game currently has been updated to include an HDR option. Uncharted 4 could be one of the first, along with Infamous: First Light. Both of these were shown at PS4's recent press event running in HDR although both were also running on the PS4 Pro. I can see that these games may well just use the HDR setting on PS4 - not enhanced resolution/frame rate.
What this means is that the PS4 (original/slim) can effectively run games in HDR like the XB1s. The first game to release on XB1s with HDR is, I believe, NBA 2K17 which is also coming to PS4 so HDR may also be an option for PS4 owners. Its not just 'exclusives' that have HDR.
Not only are we going to see new badge/stickers for things like 'VR' and 'PS4 Pro enhanced' but no doubt we will see 'HDR' as well...
Naughty Dog’s Christian Gyrling said at the event in an interview:
"We’ve never been able to intentionally show the range of colours we have here. I mean, they wanted to but they couldn’t really do it. Now, we’re really allowing especially our lighters but also all of the artists to create content that is pushing the boundaries over the restriction that was there before"
"We’re really excited to start with that process from the ground up; the artistic choice can be in the hands of the artist even more. HDR games from now on, moving forward – I think almost every single game will start supporting HDR. This is the future. We see little to no reason to not support this. It’s almost no cost, close to zero cost, to expose the HDR… but it’s an enormous benefit."
"This patch that’ll be available for release in November will allow both PS4 Pro owners and regular PS4 owners with an HDR-compatible TV to enjoy the benefits [of HDR]"
