New Hot Shots Golf is really starting to shape up judging by its Tokyo Game Show trailers – it's just taking an eternity to tee off. (Okay, so maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but Clap-Hanz will have been working on its first PlayStation 4 instalment for almost half a decade when it deploys in Summer 2017. Insane.)
If you need a little something to tide you over, then, Sony's served up a port of Hot Shots Tennis on the PlayStation 4 this week as part of its PS2 Classics initiative. Before you start pumping the air like Rafa Nadal when given a clean bill of health, it's worth mentioning that this is not the outstanding PlayStation Portable version, as the awesome single player campaign isn't included here.
Given the dramatic dearth of tennis titles on the PS4, however, we simply had to suck up our fuzzy balls and give this a (top) spin. It's a Hot Shots title alright: simple controls, cutesy presentation, and some of the worst voice acting this side of Dynasty Warriors 3. It's good fun, though, as is the mandate for this series.

Is Top Spin 5 coming anytime soon?
This was fun enough on Vita but didn't have the staying power for me that Everybodies Gold did. Once I upgraded to Virtua Tennis 4 I stopped playing this.
Still.. I'd get it again in a sale.
These kind of games should be remastered it's great fun.
@fabisputza00 Probably not, which is devastating. Top Spin 4 was outrageously good.
Sorry to be off topic, just noticed and downloaded all the battlefield 4 dlc expansions are currently free. Worth a shout I hope especially as the Base game has been on sale @ £3.99 for so long.
Really want Top Spin.. The best Tennis game i'd played since Pete Sampras on the Megadrive...
Is he really called Clap-Hanz?! (I didn't get past that part of the article)
Super Tennis on the SNES is still the best.
I loved jimmy connors on the snes
The original Virtua Tennis on Dreamcast has never been bettered, IMO.
@gpax @luke17 @SegaBlueSky your all wrong Anna Kournikovas smash court tennis on the PS1 is THE BEST TENNIS GAME EVER! Truly underappreciated game which is outstanding in 2-4 player.
@themcnoisy That was a good one to be fair! Used to play the demo for hours with my mate until I finally gave in and bought a copy, haha.
@SegaBlueSky we used to play Tekken, Ridge Racer, Olympic soccer, resi etc then one day at my mates playing Tekken in a wrapper on the side was AKSCT and he was going to trade it in. I bought it off him for a pack of twenty cigarettes. I've still got the cover and box but no disc anymore no idea what happened to the disc unfortunately but it easily the best swap I've ever done.
I know you didn't mean anything about it but that word is highly offensive in some parts of the world. Next time please choose another. -Tasuki-
It's amazing...after all of the games that came out on PS2 and some on PS3, why are we not seeing more Tennis titles...why did sega not make a new Virtua Tennis title??? Where are surfing games, something that could have benefited from Move or even the Wii remotes? Why is Volleyball completely gone except in compilations? We didn't even get a decent Bowling game, and I'd love for a new High Velocity Bowling title to come out...I'm even wondering why PAIN wasn't re-released for this generation yet.
Anyways, can't wait to purchase this title just to re-play it once again. I hope they also bring all of the other Hot Shots Golf titles out, and re-release the Out Of Bounds PS3 version with trophies for PS4...especially since we're waiting till next summer for the newest installment.
I'd be interested in a tennis title that used Move controls.
This is the problem. Juvenile renditions of what is, ultimately, an amazing and increasingly popular sport, force Tennis and tennis game development to remain non-existent. People above the age of puberty would be considered weird or downright pedofiles playing a game where little babies are hitting balls at each-other with purple flares and shooting stars so developers REALLY restrict themselves by going for this type of 'art-deco-manga' take on Tennis. Instead stick to the basics, get a good ball-physics engine in play and keep the characters real and relatable...they don't need to get the ATP professionals as license fees may be high, but just real human beings is a start? WHY ARE WE FORCED TO PLAY MANGA TENNIS?

and where is topspin? Can someone man up and do a kickstarter funded project and get a good indie tennis game going? (and no not tennis elbow, that sucks)
