Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood is the next major expansion for Square Enix's uber-popular MMORPG, but if you're still playing the game on the PlayStation 3, then you're going to need to switch to the PlayStation 4 to keep up to date, as the add-on won't be releasing on Sony's last-gen system. Announced at the game's Fan Festival overnight, and due out next summer, the package will boast a new storyline, and will also boost the release's level cap from 60 to 70.
New jobs will also be added to the title β though it's not clear what those will be at this time β while director Naoki Yoshida also confirmed that new dungeons and raids will be incorporated in due time. According to the PlayStation Blog, however, the highlight of the event was the confirmation of an increase to inventory size β these MMORPG players get hyped over the smallest of things.
The dev promises to share more about Stormblood in the run-up to launch.

Everybody tells me it is very good and that I'd have a blast playing it...but it seems like such a commitment ;_;
@Feena This is my problem with FFXIV as well. It really is a brilliant MMO - incredibly polished, a fantastic world - but it does demand a lot of your time, and the fact that it requires a subscription only adds to the pressure that you have to play it often. Then when you consider grouping is necessary to complete the main story... well, it can be a commitment like you say.
My real problem with this game is the...adult life, I have to work, accompany my parents to the doctor, study, be a company to my wife and take care of dogs, so I really can't afford my "game time" to a MMO, no matter how good it is.
@ShogunRok I'm not familiar with MMO terminology, but if by 'grouping' you mean 'being forced to play with other people to clear a dungeon', that's when I stopped playing. Was a long time ago, and it is a bit of a shame, cos once the fixed the debacle of the first release, I really enjoyed it til about level 18.
@ShogunRok "grouping" is simply putting yourself in a queue to automatically be grouped with random people pulled from all servers in your data center for the remainder of the dungeon, to be automatically disbanded when the dungeon ends.
It doesnt require trying to find/form a group. It still requires that you participate as a group (you cant AFK for 30 mins for dinner) but all of the main storline missions are easy enough that you dont have to worry too much about your skill level at group activities.
I say this as someone that plays Solo on MMORPGs 99% of the time, and only group up when required. Its not required often in FFXIV main storyline, and when it is, it easy to join for a 30 min romp in a dungeon and then go on your merry way.
@thedevilsjester Oh, it's got match making and stuff, it's just the concept that bothers me a little. It may just be for relatively short dungeon stints, but grouping up is still a departure from what the rest of the game potentially offers in that you can do just about everything else solo (barring co-op focused activities, obviously).
Though to be fair, when I played FFXIV I had to do the first dungeon with randoms, and they were very helpful and understanding. Still, I'd prefer to have the option of sticking to solo play if possible, although that would obviously take a lot of reworking.
@thedevilsjester Was that a reply to me? I assume so, so cheers
I hate the sub fee. I never know when I'll wanna play, and just don't want to worry about it. They should provide a one time cost, with a commitment to maintain servers for X amount of time, and those who choose to pay get a "pass" forever until that guaranteed date, and beyond if they continue to maintain it.
Basically a buy once and done model. I'd do it then.
Monks! My favourite class. I love this game.
@Drawfull to both you and ShogunRok.
I'd still be playing this if it wasn't for the ping issues I had.
"Please look forward to it."
@ShogunRok How much is the monthly subscription and are the PS3 servers still active? And lastly if your subscription lapses will you be able to keep your data for when you get another subscription?
@Rukiafan7 Yeah, all of your progress is saved to on server, so even if you stopped playing for months and let your subscription run out, your character would still be there if you decided to come back.
I think the PS3 servers are still active and will be for a while yet, but they'll get closed down eventually and it looks like the last-gen version won't be getting much new stuff if Stormblood is anything to go by.
As for how much the sub is, I'm not entirely sure. If I remember right a month's subscription is around the $10 mark, and there are different subscription plans for multiple months.
