PlayStation VR got off to a solid if unspectacular start in Japan, with the futuristic facemask shifting 51,644 units during its first week on sale. Reports coming out of the East suggest that the accessory is totally sold out, so this is likely the sum of what Sony shipped to its home region. PlayStation VR Worlds moved a disappointing 5,983 units, though major games like Summer Lesson were only available digitally.
While the figure doesn't look especially inspiring at first glance, it's worth reiterating those stock shortages. It's also perhaps worth keeping in mind that the Xbox One has only sold 68,756 units in the Land of the Rising Sun thus far, so Sony's virtual reality headset has almost overtaken its install base already. And we're sure that the number will keep climbing steadily as more games release, and, crucially, the Japanese giant gets more stock into the channel.

Now lets see those Summer Lesson sale numbers compared.
I wonder if it can pass lifetime Wii U sales. 😜
I'm still not sure it has "staying power". I'm not ready to dive in head first that's for sure. I need to know it's going to be supported. I don't want a $400 paper weight.
Nice pic. I thought this was a follow-up to the VR porn article.
How many did PS Vita TV sell it's first week before doing Xbox numbers every week thereafter until it fell off the charts? (Vita TV, not Vita, in case anyone is in an attacking mood)
I think that's a really good number week 1 for a $400 peripheral that needs to be hooked up to your $300 HOME console in a land where people like mobile gaming and handhelds. The world will end when 1 of these can work well on a portable device. End I tell you.
@Pink_Floyd That would be pretty sad if it did happen.
@Grawlog Did you choose the word "probing" while looking at that picture above?
@rjejr I just did a quick Google search. The Vita TV sold 42000 units in at launch. Less than 8000 units in its second and third week
That number sounds about right for Japan.
Any idea yet how many has been sold USA UK rest yet ?
@rjejr
Its interesting *Switch*eroo isn't it? Dear god!
@Punished_Boss_84 Hey Boss man. Yeah, I'm still taking it all in. I'm a home gamer only, I don't wont to pay for a nice big screen that I'm hiding behind a wall. Just take out the screen and give me a cheaper system. Or better yet remove the wall and turn it into a Sony Dash w/ weather and time and clock.
I mean, just look at how stupid that looks. A blind man w/ a 3D printer could ave done a better job, it isn't even flush. That part sticking out of the top is driving me nuts already. And the opposite controllers. I need everything symmetrical in my life, it's a character flaw.
Sorry, I just can't take that image.
@Levi456 42,000 in it's first week? So close to PSVR. Guess we'll have to keep an eye on future weeks, though I 100% predict PSVR does better than PS Vita TV.
@Punished_Boss_84 I took this pic for you at the Sony Road to Greatness event, then forgot to show it to you.
The truck - had about a dozen PS4 inside w/ SFV, Gravity Rush 2 and some racing game inside - looks all alone waiting for people too show up, but it was so cold and rainy everyone was in the food tent w the free bbq, and Sony was smart enough to have timed 20 minute admissions at the front gate as you entered.
Played GR2, am so sold, now I need to find the first. hopefully on PS+ when the 2nd releases.
@rjejr
Yeah I almost forgot this event was a thing, it not being in the UK didn't help either.
But free food? Sold. Greatness digested. GR is a great game, all the annoying gameplay quirks from the Vita has been abolished.
