Sony's dropped a new PlayStation 4 firmware update this morning, which will bring added stability to your system. Our understanding is that this update β dubbed v4.01 and weighing in at 312.1MB β has been rolled out with PlayStation VR in mind, though there's nothing in the patch notes to back that up. Probably bug fixes and the usual tweaks, then.
The update appears to be optional as we can still connect to the PlayStation Network without it installed, but you'll probably want to grab it regardless β who doesn't want the most stable system around, after all? We'll update if we learn anything new about this firmware update, but in the meantime, enjoy your new-found stability.

if it's optional then i'll wait to see if it's ok before downloading, sometimes these optional ones can break systems
Hopefully a fix for communities, since they stopped giving notifications reliably
I can attest the firmware is more stable than it ever was!
I opened several games and apps to shut them down immediately, I scrolled to the right really fast and then made sudden moves to the left and even upwards, all without even a single hiccup. I bet I could even change the settings and then choose the 'restore default settings' option to really stress- test the update, but I rather wait a couple of days to see how 4.01 is treating others; I know it's stable, but I don't wanna get too cocky.
Who needs actual games when Sony's giving us a stable October like this, right?
Most stable system around? I dunno about that. It's got a ways to go before it can challenge the 3DS...
Always good to have more stability.
So the update still doesn't fix the ce-34878-0 error I get when trying to play a game?

I assume you've seen the link, but if not might be worth a go.
I was unable to open games from the Library all weekend despite being logged into PSN.
I had to put all my download games in a folder in order to use anything...
I hope this update fixes the Library glitch.
I am rock-steady. No more dizzies!
I am stable as a table.
I couldn't connect until I downloaded the update. Other than that, more space taken away! Now, if they would fix the slowness of the Playstation Store on the PS3 and make it a little faster, I'll be happy...the PS3's store just dramatically slowed in the past few years...love how it disconnects you for no reason at all!
@GamerDad66 You weren't the only one. I bought TV Episodes through the PS4, but when I went onto the PS3 to download them, I was unable to and they didn't even show up in my download list...when I looked them up on the PS3, I was only able to 'Watch' them now, and that didn't even work on the PS3...went back to the PS4 to watch them, and it stated the network was down. Kind of a messy weekend for Playstation...glad there was no flash sale going on!
3ds and WiiU are more stable
I can not download this new update. I keeping getting error codes. The brower worked untill i tried using a different dns, and now will not connect.
My internet is working as i am using my PS3 for this post. Attempting to sign into PSN failed with my PS3 where i got error code 80710101.
I can confirm this fixes a bug in 4.00 that caused my primary ps4 to not recognize itself as my primary ps4. Called Sony repeatedly insisting that it was a bug, they were no help, and insisted my ps4 was hacked or that I was sharing my account. The minute after I installed this update, I attempted to activate my PS4 as primary, it activated instantly. Previously it would tell me that it couldn't activate as my primary ps4 because another system was already registered as my primary. Sony also refused to tell me whether or not my SKU matched the one registered as my primary (which would've confirmed a problem in the PS4's ability to recognize itself as primary, rather than another actual device being the primary)
10:00 pm EST update. I just downloaded the update and everything now is working. I was able to connect to the PSN store. Now to see about any increased stableness.
@JLPick PS3 Store has always been like that, and I sadly don't see it ever being fixed.
I still can't believe they haven't brought in custom backgrounds yet!
