After days of getting hammed in comments sections and across social media for referring to the next Red Dead game as Red Dead Redemption 2, guess what? The game is actually going to be called Red Dead Redemption 2. Excuse us while we go and round up all the smart arse remarks hurled our way over the last 48 hours.
No, but seriously, Red Dead Redemption 2 is official, as you can see from the image that we've embedded. It's also been pegged with a Fall 2017 release window, so we've got a while to wait yet. That said, you can look forward to a trailer this Thursday. The excitement is palpable.

Lets hope its not a sequel...
I meant a precuel stupid autocorrect
You do realise this is Red Dead 3, right, @ShogunRok? I just wanted to correct you in case you didn't know.
The game’s vast and atmospheric world will provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience.
Sigh.
I love the #PCmasterrace reactions in the comments of Rockstar's site.
The beggar king didn't last long in the game of thrones
I don't believe it will be a prequel, let's see..
The hype is through the roof right now!
No PC version is going to ruffle a TON of feathers from now, during launch and post launch.
Roll on Thursday
The thought of playing this on the Pro has be giddy...
Going to make a bold prediction: if there are seven playable characters and not one of them is female there will be grumbling.
@AshMK That's the way it was back in the Ol' West, brother. Them were better times. I should know - Yeehaw!
@get2sammyb Perhaps a subtitle could clear up all the confusion?
Red Dead 3 : Read Dead Redemption 2 - The Prequel
@kyleforrester87 Never heard of Calamity Jane?

Love how the PC guys are getting their knickers in a twist, they can be their own worst enemy at times.
I reckon we'll get a story trailer tomorrow followed by a first gameplay demo at PSX.
Might be worth investing it a PS4 Pro now methinks.
@AshMK That's fictional my friend, John Marston - now there's a real legend!
Looking forward to that trailer. Really want to see where the series will be heading this time.
PC players do their utmost to distance themselves from the rest of the gaming community with their superiority complex then are the first to complain when a title is console exclusive.. Even just at launch. They get a sh*t ton of exclusives we dont & have the lions share of indie products too.. Cant have it all, chaps.
Can't wait to see the trailer.
"it just better and better and better"
Can't wait to play it in 2020 after a few delays on console and a 2 year wait for PC again.
@FaultyDroid Unfortunately there is a stigma attached to the "PC master race" , but there are those of us who share their gaming hobby across all platforms. Some games, like GTAV, are simply superior on PC due to mods, graphics, and gameplay options that just aren't possible on PS4. What is a terrible, however, is that GTAV sold nearly 8 million on PC, two years after it's initial launch, and they STILL won't do a simultaneous launch.
@Feena
Check out IGN's comment section too
There is an endless supply of angry PC post!
"Getting hammed" is my new favourite phrase.
To be fair, Red Dead Redemption 2 is such a bad title. I mean... "Red Dead Revolution" "Red Dead Reborn" "Red Dead Revolt" "Red Dead Rising" "Red Dead Resolve" are all better names.
@Napples
Yeah i know, I game on PC too mainly for the mods, & the 4X strategy exclusives etc. The whole masterrace thing is embarrassing to say the least. I bought a PS4 because I could play online with my buddies & not worry about scripters etc, or have to deal with missing .dll's & whatnot. I dont doubt that the new RDR will come to PC eventually.
@Kellanved
You came up with all those on the fly.. Best I could cough up was Read Dead Rampage.
When I first read that title I thought this was 2017 and the game was coming out now.
Too much NX.
On top of no PC announcement, there is also no Nintendo announcement. Might not seem like news, but with the NX out by then it seems a little worrying that there will once again be a lack of 3rd party support on the system.
As to the people gloating over the fact there is no PC release, that makes you pretty much as bad as the people you dislike on the PC that wind console users up. You get a vocal minority of cretins in any group, don't be one of them and understand they never represent the overall majority of any community.
Cracking! So hyped for this! Shame it's not gonna be out for a another year!
@Xaessya this really must look like schadenfreude and I do hope they get the game they want to play but really some guys live up to the most vile stereotype of the entitled pcgamer.
I especially enjoy those who threaten the publisher to pirate their game if they don't get a simultaneous release. That will really make the pc version happen faster! 😂
@get2sammyb Actually Sammy, it's Video Game 4,596,704. Don't you know that it isn't just the third video game ever made.
@Dichotomy Nintendo seems to have kept their dev kits to a small circle of trusted developers (basically, internal and Ubi), so Western devs like Rockstar probably know as much about the NX's hardware as we do. They can't announce a port without at least knowing the CPU architecture
@AFCC You do know how RDR ended yes? It has to be a prequel.
I think the title is perhaps a marketing thing. People who only really loosely know about RDR can immediately identify this product as being related to the first one.
@TeslaChippie That in itself is worrying given the NX is supposed to release in March and game development takes 1.5 years or more in a lot of cases these days (and even bug testing on an open world game can run for 6 months). I heard rumours that games will be easy to port to the system, but they are just rumours so far. I'd really like Nintendo to become competitive again as their games deserve a larger audience, but little things like this don't inspire confidence
I don't care if it's called John Marston's Whacky Horse Simulator 2017. It's coming baby!!!
But just to up the pedantic stakes, couldn't it be called Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead 3 and both be correct? It's the second Red Dead Redemption but the third game with the Red Dead name!
sits back and grabs the popcorn
If it's a prequel I would've gone with Red Dead Remembered. The consoles first release makes sense. A sizeable chunck of the PC community will pirate this game, this will force some gamers to buy it on consoles mitigating some of the loses.
I imagine the enhanced PC port would also take a long time, no need for everyone to wait when the game is ready to go. Some PC gamers will even double dip when the time comes.
This is what the PC Masterace has to live with. Consoles>PC
Rockstar: "...the game's vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience."
So it sounds like a single player campaign with multiplayer mode growing out of it, correct? I do not want a multiplayer only game.
@Feena 8 million copies sold on PC, two years after launch. Countless mods that introduce tangible gameplay and graphical changes, extending the replayability, for many, ten fold. Yet, with all that, no simultaneous launch, because rockstar knows their fanbase well, and knows they will double, or triple dip, by 2020, when the X2, PS5, and PC versions become available. I'm passing on the console version, because GTAV is vastly superior on PC, and i'm not buying multiple copies to support their greedy business plan. Every system has their advantages and disadvantages, one isn't superior to the other until you get to individual preference and willingness to do more than just pick up a controller. Yelling out "pc master race lolz" is just as ignorant and unnecessary as "console peasant".
12 months, never mind.
Not sure why they made the announcement now seems a strange time they could have done it at E3. Waiting a year for the title not hype from me.
@Napples I absolutely agree, I just made a snarky remark because I am appalled by some of the comments... It was about the attitude shown I'm the comments - I really hope they get the game they want, seriously
@AlejandroMora It would have to be, Redemption 1 was at the end of the Wild West era.
This is obviously going to get a PC release (the previous game only didn't because of development hell), but after the console release: Rockstar and 2K saw they could get people to double or even triple dip for GTA V with it's ports so you know they'll be using that tactic again. Also gonna mention for some other commenters that the "PC Master Race" is meant to be an ironic term, anyone using it sincerely is very misguided.
With that out of the way, I'll be looking forward to this when it comes out after the inevitable delays - I'm liking the looks of a Magnificent 7 style Red Dead.
@Dichotomy Rockstar never really supposed Nintendo anyway outside of Chinatown Wars, so that isn't a big indicator of anything yet.
I hope the time is before RD Redemption which was in the early 20th century and had an automobile in one mission. Automobiles is not my idea of a "Western". Horses and trains will do.
Unless delayed untill 2018 i can now be assured that at least one AAA game will be released on PS4 in 2017 that i will add to my favorites list and be worth every penny and every minute.
So it's a PS4 exclusive? Or one of a growing, weary TIMED exclusive, even in the context of announcements?
Nevertheless, I look forward to a new opus from Rockstar, enjoyed the original on PS3. Or is that sequel 😬
Online should be good. Can't wait to buy a house in them thar hills and fill my barn with nice steeds.
@Galvatron consoles first inevitably PC second.
Looking at some of the other comments above I dont get why the people on PC are so bothered, get a grip its Rockstars game they can do what they want. 8 million sold wahh wahh wahh, buy a £150 ps4 then you numptees and don't hold off buying it for 2 years for the 'superior' pc version. Without consoles GTA, Bully and Red Dead wouldn't exist as franchises. Now go back to your desk in the corner.
Outstanding! The old rumors suggest it will take place before Red Dead Redemption, chronologically speaking. Either way, I am very excited. This is Rockstars first game built for the current Gen machines and I am very curious to see the technical advances they have made. They are normally pretty large leaps between generations and by next fall both PS4 pro and project Scorpio will be out to take advantage of whatever Rockstar has cooled up.
Red Dead Acid Reflux
and when they release red dead redemption for ps4 and x1 it will be Red Dead Remaster
@Bluetrain7 Forbes has a great article on how much of a money maker GTA Online has been for Rockstar. I recommend the read. http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2016/10/17/why-gta-online-makes-me-a-bit-worried-about-red-dead-redemption-2/
@starhops Thank you for the article. That was an interesting read. I agree with the author that GTA Online has probably provided Rockstar with incentive to beef up the multiplayer aspect in future games to take advantage of microtransactions. But he acknowledged that RDR2 has been in development for years so the main focus has probably been on single player from the beginning which is reassuring to me. Rockstar knows that they hit it out of the part with the story and characters in the previous game so I cannot see them abandoning that in the single player mode of RDR2.
Why are so many people hung up on the name? It doesn't matter at all.
@Bluetrain7 Yeah, I found it interesting too. I just hope they stay strong with the story / single player or through in some fun co-op along the way.
@slimcrowder Because dull is well, dull. We want PAZAZZ!
They should totally make this a procedurally generated open world. Coz it would be so awesome if someone did that.
@Smash41 why would more game modes be bad?? otherwise it's just story mode and then a paperweight once you finish.
Autumn
@Neolit What you say is unfortunate but true, and i know it. I just see games like Witcher 3, with a huge open world, getting launched across each platform at the same time, and they're still raking in the money today. I would be willing to bet that CDPR had a smaller team for that than rockstar will have for RDR2 as well. I am aware the online portion will be the most challenging aspect...but i'm not really interested in a western GTA online. Just sucks knowing we have to wait, hopefully months instead of years, because of rockstar's business practices.
May I remind every PC user that not even Red Dead Redemption is on PC....
@FaultyDroid Can you tell me the name of pc exclusive that's not a indie, free to play or mmo? After ps4 launch, pc doesn't have AAA exclusive anymore. Besides star citizen maybe, I mean it's kinda boring if the answer to my question is the same after this 5 year
@Napples Pc version of gta 5 sold 5.5 million (steamspy), where you got the 8 million number?
And the number sold on console? 11 million on launch (wiki). Let me rephrase that, after 1.5 year the number of gta 5 sold on pc still can't beat one day launch sales of console. In the term of sales, pc are nothing compared to console, not to mention piracy and of course the "I'll wait until it discounted 90% on steam mentality". Pc is cool if you want better rock on rise of tomb raider thought..
@wiiware
Where did I say I play on PC for its AAA exclusives
@kyleforrester87
The phrase 'procedurally generated' no longer has the appeal to me that it used to, after a certain title released earlier this year..
@FaultyDroid Ok, when you say "They get a sh*t ton of exclusives we dont & have the lions share of indie products too" I thought you referring to AAA exclusive.
I think "procedurally generated" is just another name for "randomly generated", it means the developer don't have to craft the world by themselves. But the most impressive open world game is crafted by hand, not by math, the witcher 3, skyrim, grand theft auto series is a better game because of it.
@wiiware
Not at all, big titles like Witcher 3 & GTA5 id rather play on console as i'd need a decent rig to run them otherwise. I can enjoy the massive indie market on my mid-range PC & games like the new Red Dead, Horizon Zero dawn etc on my PS4 not having to worry about forking out for a new GPU. As @AD-80 said, the last Red Dead didnt even make it onto PC.. I know what procedurally generated means btw I was just referring to NMS..
@wiiware
"I'll pirate it when it releases late, out of protest!"
Then they wonder why Rockstar doesn't care too much about making a PC version.
Mind you, people having kittens for getting a complete version of Tomb Raider for cheaper a bit later were equally as funny among the console peasantry.
@Serf I thought Rockstar had invented a new season or month, thanks for pointing that out.
I think Americans now call Autumn - Fall pretty much all of the time. Which is sad because Autumn is a well better name.
@themcnoisy
Autumn...autumnal
Fall...fallumnal? Falley? Falltry? ☺️
Why can't everyone just try and be a bit more British!
One of them better be able to throw knives like Billy Rocks.
