This author's last-last-gen Western of choice was Activision's cult classic GUN, so Red Dead Revolver kinda got lost in our boots. But Rockstar wasn't peddling snake oil back in 2004 – this game was clearly ahead of its time. Turning back the clocks with this PlayStation 4 port, the control scheme feels almost contemporary, with a cover system included a good two years before Gears of War.
It's a pleasant surprise if your first taste of Red Dead was with Redemption, then, but it's making us yearn for the long-awaited third entry in the series. Could this be Rockstar readying us for the inevitable, or is it merely looking to make a quick buck? The answer's probably a bit of both, but at least this outing in the Old West ain't showing its age, eh?

A Red Dead Redemption 2 would be great, but I still want a sequel to Bully more than anything.
I also prefer Gun to RDRevolver. Gun has wide screen and progressive scan which provides a playable image on my 42 inch hd tv.
I have not played RDRevolver in years. I got stuck on a boss battle and quit. I remember the quick draw gun fights were difficult but satisfying when i eventually won.
I will probably pass on this and hope R* has a new Red Dead game for my next Wild West game.
RDR2 is ALL i want from rockstar at this point.
Yikes, this looks terrible.
RD Redemption was a fantastic game, though. I would be thrilled with a full-blown sequel.
Had so much fun with this back in the day. One of my favourites on PS2.
@NoCode23 I also quit on one of the quick draw bosses. The controls were finicky and it was infuriating. I've tried to put this one out of my mind after the masterpiece of Redemption.
I had this on PS2 and must agree with the comments here that the quick draw sections were really really frustrating at the time. I finished it but only because I was broke and couldn't afford another game that month.
I was wary of Redemption after this game but they were poles apart in terms of gameplay.
I too preferred GUN, which was just so much fun to play and the voice cast was top notch.
Idk I loved RDR back tha day, had so much fun playing it. I always remember I got my mom into it and we would always play splitscreen and team up. And the mission with Pig Josh, holy crap for those who dont remember that boss fight was friggin nutz!! Also remember the stupid duel with Billy the Kid (or something like that) towards the end of the game. It was one of those missions that made you want to smash the controller into the wall! This game was the only reason I bought Gun afterwards. There was another western game that came out after these two called Call of Juarez or something but never peaked my interest but I am curious if it was a good game or not if anybody remembers it.
GUN was so good. I still have it actually in case i ever want to give it another spin. I must have played through it about four times on PS2. Might pick this up but certainly not before the inevitable sale.
@JoeBlogs Agreed. Redemption and Portal 2 are probably the only reasons I haven't packed up or sold on my PS3 yet. Would love it if those two got ported - or at least added to PS Now.
Honestly looks like total guff
Surprised at people saying this looks terrible — it's 12 years old! I think it holds up remarkably well considering its age!
Red Dead Redemption was kinda disappointing to me. I liked the overall atmosphere but otherwise I think it's hugely overrated. Bully I liked and would really like to see a sequel. All in all, Rockstar to me is one of the most overrated developers out there. And 2K as well.
Yay Red Dead Remaster! Guess devs found something safer and lazier than sequels this gen.
I tried replaying this on the 360 a few years ago, if you get hit by this one bosses whip it crashes the game, I thought my copy was borked and just returned it, only found out ages after that the problem was on the emulation side.
I'll buy this when its a little cheaper than $20.
