Hello Games probably couldn't have picked a better time to announce No Man's Sky's first proper update in months – it's not like we haven't got plans or anything. Writing on the game's official website months after the title's last update, the Guildford-based studio has revealed that it intends to implement the foundations of the foray's promised base building soon. "Detailed patch notes will follow, and release will be soon," it said.
It also touched upon what it's been up to these past few months: "In the nine weeks since [our last update] our small team has been hard at work on development, testing, and certification for the Foundation Update. It won't be our biggest update, but it is the start of something. The discussion around No Man's Sky since release has been intense and dramatic. We have been quiet, but we are listening and focusing on improving the game that our team loves and feels so passionately about."
We suppose the question is: is it too late?

Sounds interesting.......i've been enjoying wandering round space mining stuff for no reason hopefully this is the first step to adding a few more of those promised features?
I still wanna get this game at some stage, but only when it's very cheap or even if it comes up on Plus.
Too late for those that sold their copy. I've sat on my play through for a while.
Is it too late? No.
I haven't played for a while, but I've liked and enjoyed the game since its release. Anything they add is welcome. I'd particularly like some proper mapping, to find your way back to places you've been.
The only reason I've kept it is because I wanna see if it becomes a much better experience after the updates. It's a shame this wasn't in the game to begin with, but oh well I suppose.

Not too late. The base game was always going to be a starting point that the team could build upon and expand, and even though the initial release was a little underwhelming, I'm still really excited for what the game could become.
That's great news. Really glad they havnt just sacked this game off. The game is okay as it is, but could be a lot better with this kind of extra work - Looking forward to the update.
I enjoyed what I played. It was the perfect chill out game after work. However, it's going to take a lot more than base building to get me to continue my journey to center of the universe, knowing what lies there.
That's great news, I actually quite enjoyed it and would definitely go back if extra features are added
glad to hear. Ain't played in a while but as I own a digital copy I can nip in and out as they update or I feel the need for a space voyage.
It needs a hell of a lot of development to be even considered as a game. At the moment it's a boring, bug-ridden tech demo with truly awful performance.
The story is rubbish and the gameplay is mundane. As for the game's climax; that's two fingers to the player....
It will be interesting to see how they fix it.
Too little for so much time waiting. Will only install again when they do massive updates
They need to do this to try and salvage their reputation. Will be interested to see if they add anything really worthwhile, although adding what was originally promised would be better.
I would say its to late and there reputation is all but gone, people have moved on if thay would have had the balls and addressed it at the time thay might have got a second chance.
This game should have been Digital-only at a much lower price. It's only 5GB.
At $29 Day One, this game could have been a successful indie darling (instead of the most hated game since The Order: 1886).
Corporate greed destroyed this game and I'm afraid it's too late now for NMS to redeem itself or Hello Games.
It's still a great game to play. Can;t wait.
No, it's not too late.
It's certainly not ideal, but it's not too late.
What they need to be doing is watching what others are doing. Games like Osiris New Dawn will be taking No Mans Sky to task, and if they're smart they'll adapt and incorporate some ideas other games of this flavor are chasing.
I think its too late for them, sure its something for the small circle of hardcore fans it has, but It would literally have to be almost a brand new game if they ever want to redeem their reputation with gamers.
I feel bad, cos they are a small team and they seem to genuinely love what they do and created, I dont think Sony helped by treating it as AAA when it was nothing more than a experimental indie game and then basically abandoning them when the poo hit the fan after release.

@gmxs When people collectively lost their minds at E3 when they saw it, of course Sony jumped on it cos they all of a sudden they had a system seller on their hands.
This was my biggest disappointment of the year. I sold my copy long ago, but I may get it again after they add a whole lot more content.
Great game - the base building will add a necessary layer in terms of growth and longevity, oh and the soundtrack is sublime 👌
I thought the game was decent but just got a little boring after a while. Let's hope the keep up with the updates and maybe it could actually turn out great. As long as they listen to the community and communicate more it should turn out alright.
I put my play through on hold and am hoping for more updates. This is encouraging.
At the current price of $25 US it's a great game to experience just for what it is!
Single Player explore and grind to the center of the galaxy. Working to get full slots on your space suite (48) weapon (24) and space ship (48).
Finding crashed ships for upgrades and salvaging them for parts and minerals. It can be a lot more I am very interested in seeing where Hello Games takes this. I hope in a direction of Drive Club that became a really great racing game.
@gmxs Yeah I think its too late, they sold a lot of copies of the game but at the expense of their reputation, I don't think anyone will care if they make a new ambitious game again.
I don't have problem with nms because I bought it not knowing the hype, I just want a space exploration game, but I agree the reason of the backlash is because sony & hello games is hyping it too much, add no review until it launch and $60 price which I think is too much (not because it indies, but because although the game is big, the gameplay loop is small) and you got a great recipe for disaster.
It's a strange one for me. I don't think the current game is that far off from the E3 trailer to make it intentionally disingenuous. Most of the features in that trailer are in the game currently, some aren't. I put around 50 hours into the game, and it does become repetitive after a while when there is no overarching goal other than reaching the center.
For example, there should be sub-goals for every type of play. Want to mine stuff? Then there should be some form of mining path that rewards you with hauler ships, specific mining tools, etc. Want to defeat space pirates? Should be a bounty hunter path rewarding you with nimble fighters, better ship guns, etc.
I'm looking forward to future updates. I feel like the game has a lot of potential. I don't care about base building though. I'm not entirely sure why anyone would want it in this game. Planets are too uniform for bases to matter-you can see everything you need to see with short range exploration from the ship, and flying is always faster to move long distances. That sort of game design constantly pushes you to keep moving forward, to the next planet, to the next system. What's the point of a base? It's not Minecraft, and quite frankly the expectation that it should be is a little ridiculous.
@mantralux I'm not sure I understand how adding these sub quests would make the game any different. You'd still be doing all the same things. The game needs more variety, but the lack of direction is one of it's strengths to my mind.
I've got some fond memories of NMS, like getting lost miles and miles from my ship on an extreme planet, having to time my way back through caverns with the turning weather, or being followed into a planet's atmosphere by pirates and dogfighting them in its skies. I enjoyed it and will do again through future updates.
maybee if sean had spent more time at studio instead of going on every talk show he could. Then game comes out people play it & it was like space completely silent. I did enjoy it but simple things like aliens didnt do anything buildings all the same. & a state of the art spaceship that didnt have a map.
I was glad I supported it at launch, got a few days of fun out of it. Also glad that I traded it in for Overwatch.
I hope they do something with the cash they've got to make it worth another look at some point.
Unfortunately, the way they keep referring to 'our small team', etc is starting to sound like excuses - hire some more staff, you sold millions of copies!!
Still got this game installed and still play it a few hours a week but one trophy has me hating it but glad they are still making updates to the game
@NoxAeturnus The biggest problem with No Man's Sky for me is that it makes everyone into generalists and no one into a specialist, because of how the mechanics for each lack variety. All NMS players are miners, bounty hunters, traders and explorers, because learning to master either of these skills takes around five minutes.
There should have been multiple paths you can go down that would reward you differently. 100+ slot ships for miners, special nimble fighters for bounty hunters, allowing players to have multiple ships and giving traders more garage space, base building mechanics specifically for explorers to set up outposts, special companions for those seeking the atlas...and so on.
If you could become a specialist, the game would have variety and replayability.
I think this game can evolve into something better than when it was released. The problem is no one trusts the Sean and the players have long deserted this game. I have not played it but I do enjoy base building so will probably pick it up at some stage.
too little too late this game was the most over hyped pile of dross of this year
@mantralux I think I misunderstood what you originally meant. I thought you meant some simple sub-quests, which I don't think would add anything at all. Go here, do the thing, fetch the thing. What you really meant was what I meant by variety. I also think there should be some specialization similar to what you suggest. I can also see how bases might be used as warp points for revisting planets/systems, but I don't think it's likely we'll get anything that useful, which again makes me wonder why bases even should be a thing in this game. They go against the core design.
@itshoggie I got my copy for $13 from Gamefly. I'd wager that's as cheap as you could get it for a while.
@Azikira don't have GameFly in Ireland
