Dragon Quest XI will deploy on the PlayStation 4 in Japan next year, Square Enix announced during a Jump Festa stage event earlier today. The sequel β which is also set to release on the Nintendo 3DS, albeit using a different engine and art style β is likely to have Sony rubbing its hands, as it will almost certainly be a big hardware mover in Japan.
The game is set in the vast world of Lotozetasia, and sees you assume the role of a young man from the quiet village of Ishi. You can get a good look at the long-locked hero in the opening movie embedded above, but it's the gameplay video below that you'll want to watch β both the PS4 and 3DS versions of this title are looking outstanding.
Are you holding out hope for a Western release of this role-playing game? Salute the Dragon Quest theme tune in the comments section below.

2017 just got even more ridiculous. Looks great!
Well when is it released in Europe. That is what i care about.
Mmm I am actually a bit underwhelmed, but it could be the art style: I've never been a great fan of how consistently this saga aims for the same look and feel over and over again. If it ends up being great, I'll play it of course! Much more hyped for Ninokuni 2 tbh (speaking about cell shaded games)
Wait, what gives with you guys mentioning the 3DS version, I thought this was a Sony only site? Don't tell me you've been reading the comments and taking them into consideration. I think Switch is also supposed to be getting a version as well. If it gets the PS4 version that portability could be a big selling point in Japan for the system. Though by next holiday PS4 could have 10x the install base of Switch.
Looking forward to this one if it comes west before we've all moved on to PS5.
Watched the vids.
Trailer felt like a cross between FF9 and Zelda.
Game play just looked like Zelda.
I think it would be in Nintendo's best interest to get Zelda BotW out before this releases in Japan. I'm pretty sure the rest of the world will get Zelda before this.
@rjejr Switch version is very probable imho, I don't think this game has too much going on on a technical level to make it "a difficult port". While probably more demanding, I can see XV being a great fit for the Switch as well, hoping for a port that includes some of the patches /dlc. It could do great in Japan.
Been waiting for this for a long time. I love this series, can't wait for the PS4 or switch version!
Now if we could only get 10...
I like that Future Trunks is the main character
I'm buying all 3 versions!
I'm actually more excited about this than FF15
Jolly good!Now if they just announce a release date for us English chaps that would be spiffing!
I believe that the Switch would be pretty much like the PS4's so I am sooo getting the Switch version because of home console graphics with portability !!
@Feena If Switch gets FFXV I hope they time it w/ the "Complete" edition on PS4/X1. So much being added, a complete edition seems logical next holiday maybe. I was going to wait until it was complete but getting a PS4 for Christmas it was the most requested game from everyone in my family, and that means we also get the blu-ray movie and hardcover guide book. Wouldn't have been the same w/o it. Of course w/ all the sales on it I probably should have waited and saved a few bucks, but I really wanted that chocobo skin for the car Amazon was giving away w/ the pre-order.
@rjejr Ueah, that would make total sense as 2017 Xmas release.
As it is, there is an incredible amount of things to do in the game anyway, you won't regret it...I hit the 50 hours mark in chapter 3 before deciding to move on a little bit more hastily since I was ridiculously overleveled for the main quest. π
Wow the trailer looks awesome! It's like Dragon quest used a pixar team to do the animations. I feel a sense of open world witcher influence in this game! Feels epic. Must buy for me!
PS4 footage looks glorious. I'd prefer it on Switch, but I'm not sure I want to wait to play it if that version launches later.
@Feena @rjejr After seeing zelda graphics I'm not sure ff xv can be ported to switch, if nintendo itself can't make a great open world game with good graphics (although the game look fun, zelda botw graphics look like ps3 games compared to ff xv, witcher 3 and horizon, I think only people without ps4 can say zelda botw graphics is great) what hope is squareenix can? I'm afraid the switch will be like ps3, can't run open world game without downgraded graphics.
Not to mention the storage, ff xv just got a 8gb day one patch with many additional patch to follow, where's the switch will store them, cartridge has limit compared to ps4 hdd that can be upgraded to 4T. Also I don't think mobile cpu can run ff xv without some serious downgrade. Maybe the switch will get dq 11 3ds version?
@wiiware A few things: Nintendo is very new to making open-world games. I wouldn't be surprised if the art style was chosen due to lack of competence. BotW is also a cross-gen game with the Wii U initially in mind during development. One game's graphics also can't define the console's graphical prowess, otherwise you'd be able to judge the PS4's power on 30fps Little Big Planet and Knack, or the awful Lichdome Battlemage and Homefront: The Revolution ports.
Not saying the Switch will be as powerful as PS4, but I wouldn't be surprised with Square could port FFXV given they could take away a few bells and whistles. Either way, I don't see a port happening, unfortunately.
@wiiware Well, we don't really know yet what's powering the Switch, or it's storage solutions. And don't forget, Switch doesn't need PS4 power, FFXV is running on X1, which isn't as powerful as PS4, so if Squenix can make a it work on X1 I figure they could get it running on Switch, as Switch should be close enough to X1. Whether they do or not I don't know, but if Switch isn't "close enough" to X1 then Nintendo really messed up.
Switch will probably work w/ at least a 128GB microSD card at launch, which runs about $40, so that should be enough space for a couple of games and DLC. It will probably only come w/ a small size pack in, 16 or 32. but Vita doesn't come w/ much either, so as long as it isn't proprietary memory people will deal.
Hardware mover? It's on the 3DS. THat's gonna sell more
Anyway, they also hinted a Switch version, so...ya Nintendo
Man, all these comments about a Switch version when it hasn't been announced for it. That old misinformation that SE announced it for NX as well as 3DS and PS4 still persists I see. Definitely not ruling out a possible Switch release but it not been announced yet.
@rjejr the thing is, Switch will have to be pretty underpowered. X1 and PS4 both have fans and crap loads of ventilation to stop overheating. Meaty components give out insane amounts of heat so cooling is vital. If their fans stopped working they'd shut down in seconds. Switch, as a handheld, has no fan or cooling vents. It's something everyone seems to overlook when guessing at its power. It cannot be that powerful. It also only has a 720p display which might still be it's target even when on a TV. Remember, this isn't really a home console/handheld hybrid, as their marketing want people to believe, it's a handheld that comes with a TV-out cable. Moreover, FFXV still runs pretty badly on PS4, frequently being some way under 30fps.
Also remember that the GC could easily have run FFX, X-2 and XI but didn't get any of them. Wii U could've run any FF from VII up to Lightning Returns but didn't get any. PC did, even iOS did. No Nintendo device has got any of those, though.
@Goob I was actually hoping switch is the follow up to 3ds without the 3D, not a home console. I don't want another home console thats weaker than ps4 pro, by becoming home console the switch can't become a good portable because if switch can run home console games it means the battery is not good.
I just want nintendo to make a great portable system with no gimmick, like psvita without touchscreen on the back, use sdcard, have oled screen, have tv-out, and have nintendo games. And of course have all of nintendo 1st party virtual console games from the nes to wii u, with good account system so I won't have to buy the games again when the next portable is coming.
@rjejr Please tell me you're kidding about 128gb is enough for a couple of games and dlc, my ps4 have 1T and I have to delete games from time to time so it still have space for games patch. Doom is 60gb and the patch is 19gb!! Today games storage requiment is crazy.
Also we do know what's powering the switch, it's a nvidia tegra chip.
@rjejr The gameplay is nothing like Zelda. DQ is a turn-based party-based RPG like older FF. Zelda is an action game with one character. What you saw in that video wasn't really gameplay per se. No more than seeing Cloud run around the chocobo ranch in FFVII would be representative of FFVII gameplay. For some reason SE have avoided showing the battles.
@Matroska "Switch, as a handheld, has no fan or cooling vents"
Well, rumour has it, and that's mostly what we have w/ Switch, rumours, is that the vent on top of the Switch is a fan cooling vent w/ a fan built into the tablet. See the 5 holes across the top.
that's the Switch Jimmy Fallon was playing on the tonight show so it's as real as we'll get until January.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/10/what-we-know-and-what-we-can-guess-about-nintendo-switchs-insides/
"No Nintendo device has got any of those, though."
Nintendo did get Cloud in SSB, and rumour has it the Cloud amiibo will be unveiled in January alongside the Switch. Why have Cloud in SSB and an amiibo unless FF was coming to Switch? Maybe the FF7 remake, but FFXV still has a slim shot. Also, both DQ 7 & 8 on 3DS, which is made by Squenix. And Bravely Default 1 & 2 on 3DS. So there is a working relationship between Squenix and Nintendo. Wii got FF:CC:TCB.
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/11/rumour_bayonetta_and_cloud_amiibo_delayed_until_release_of_super_smash_bros_on_switch
Nintendo got all the Dragon Quest main titles in some form. I'm sure XI will come to Switch.
1 - 4: NES, DS
5 - 6: SNES, DS
7 - 8: 3DS
9: DS
10: Wii, Wii U
11: 3DS, Switch?
@TheLZdragon
Pretty sure a Switch version was announced back when the game itself was announced. Of course Switch was still under the codename NX at that time, but DQ XI is definitely on the way to the Switch. In fact, if SE has any brains it will now start making more games for Nintendo again. It makes no freaking sense to put games like Final Fantasy on Xbox and completely avoid the brand that actually sells in Japan.
Are people really expecting a game that's designed for the PS4/Xboxone, will run on the Switch with half the RAM, yeah good luck with that.
@wiiware You know that the switch uses cartridges which means it doesn't need as much storage as you say.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ROM_cartridge#Advantages_and_disadvantages
Game looks lovely and i really hope it does make it to switch which im really rooting for and will certainly buy(secretly hoping for snes type glory) BUT i also have a feeling that the switch will be nintendo last "home" console and their focus after switch will be handheld/mobile
Oh, wow! The cutscene visuals looks gorgeous!
@banacheck Half of what RAM? You mean the rumors and unofficial specs? Also, from what I understand, power and specs are more complicated than just numbers
@rjejr
I hope it is powerful enough, and those may be air vents, but a mechanical fan In a handheld would compromise the battery life to a serious degree.
@TheLZdragon I think the rumoured specs are pretty much what we're getting. It's about on par with the reasonable expectations anyway. Still, you're right, it's more than just numbers. Cartridges for example don't need as much RAM for the same processes that optical media does, and we don't even know how much RAM will be left for the devs to access. Let's not forget that Bandai Namco got Dark Souls III running on the Switch in an acceptable state. I think that the system will be more powerful than some think it will be, on the other hand, it's still a small handheld after all, so ridiculous stuff like running AAA games in 4K is obviously out of the question.
Also, I'm sorry Sammy, I blame @rjejr for starting this Nintendo discussion!
@Octane While it is almost always my fault, I'm not the one who put this in the article. I mean, come on, what did he think was going to happen?
"which is also set to release on the Nintendo 3DS"
"both the PS4 and 3DS versions of this title are looking outstanding."
Deep down inside every adult Sony fan is a little kid Nintendo fan.
Sony and Nintendo are best pals forever! Let's conquer the green menace!
@Bobbycuckoo " a mechanical fan In a handheld would compromise the battery life"
Well battery life has been a concern since September when the rumour about "noisy cooling" came out.
http://wccftech.com/nintendo-nx-dock-support-usb-3-0-camera-microphone-wont-built-battery-life-not-great-rumor/
Of course most people thought she was utterly insane back then, that nobody would actually put a fan in a handheld, but then everything else she had said panned out.
Prevailing wisdom is that the fan will only turn on while docked - supposedly the toaster has vents in the back but no fan - and the CPU/GPU has to overclock to output 1080p to the TV and that the fan won't be needed for the 720p Switch screen while portable. But nobody knows anything for sure, it's Nintendo.
Side note - I don't think anybody thought Sony would put a spinning disc in their handheld, but they did, and it worked out ok for them, so strange things have happened before.
We're going to have to wrap up this Switch discussion, everyone.
Wow this looks great. Dragon quest xi and ni no kuni 2 will make 2017 a great jrpg year
@FreakerZ And Persona 5!
Thanx i was forgetting that one. Personaly im more fan of the fantasy-settings but yeah persona5 wil also be great and i might try it
@rjejr
Fair point, I will try to be optimistic about this Nintendo console, the last 2 (apart from a few excellent games) left me disappointed.
Loved the ds and 3d tho.
I'll stick with The Witcher 3, thanks..
@ShogunRok So are you saying we'll have to Switch subjects?
Will this have the classic turn based battles the series is known for?
@TheLZdragon Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Nice.
@TheLZdragon Very good... but yes, sadly!
@ApostateMage Yeah it will, I imagine it's going to be a bit more dynamic in presentation, though. Not quite as static as it is traditionally.
Sorry to add one more Switch thing on but it's just a link so hopefully it's not too annoying.

Different note:
There's no way SE would stop it being turn-based after the backlash when they tried to do that with IX.
