In news that will surprise no one, Media Molecule's Dreams will not receive a beta before the end of the year. The game was set to get a sampler around this time, but the Guildford-based outfit has practically shut up shop over the past few months; it wasn't in attendance at E3 2016 or PSX 2016 earlier in the year.
That's because, according to co-founder Siobhan Reddy, it's been busy beavering away on the ambitious creative project. "We are well on the way, and have had a really productive year," she wrote on the dev's official blog. "We have ticked off many big tasks including implementing a working rough cut of the full feature set, starting the QA/developer version of the trial, and making good progress on the game campaign we are making within Dreams."
So the beta trial is still on the way, then – it's just not going to drop until the New Year. To be brutally honest, while we think this game looks intriguing, we reckon that Sony's marketing team needs to go back to the drawing board in order to come up with a new promotional plan for the project. And we don't envy its task one bit – this really does look like an impossible sell so far.

What happened to that game with ghe box guy with a bomb on his head and a cute hat? Walked out a door and blew up.
@BLP_Software Wattam? It seems to be still in development: http://www.funomena.com/wattam/
@get2sammyb There are a lot of weird games coming out...eventually...for Sony. Thats their E3 really. "Its coming....sometime not now!". But I forgot Dreams existed, Im not sure what it even is (No Mans Sky again, thisll be fun) and I only remember Wattam for the sheer "wtf".
Cant really push these as games...
Media Molecule are so clever and inventive. I wish they'd just make a game.
Glad they went silent, this game is too ambitious. Not my type of game though. @johncalmc I agree, they can develop a gorgeous game without the "create" element that they're focusing on. Hope they listen.
@KingSimba @johncalmc Nah, I disagree. While this is basically an impossible sell as I said in the article, I don't think any team or group should take the path of least resistance.
I admire them for shooting for the moon, even if I think this will be a commercial catastrophe. Why not, right? You only live once.
Besides, they tried making a traditional game in Tearaway. It was fantastic and it sold about ten copies...
Tearaway was brilliant. It might not have sold but it was absolutely the best Vita game in terms of demonstrating why each of the features of the Vita were necessary. It was like the essential, traditional launch title that shows new gamers how to use the system in cool ways, except it came out well after the system launched and nobody cared by then.
With Dreams it looks like they're just going further down the toolset-rather-than-game rabbit hole they started with LittleBigPlanet, and that's cool and all, and it's nice that they're following their, erm, dreams, but I just wish they'd rein it in a bit. Given how inventive they are, I just wish they'd use that to tell me a story rather than giving me all the bits and pieces to spend hours building my own.
@get2sammyb I pretty enjoyed Tearaway on Vita, using the Vita's features and all. I think Mm will get a real shot if they'll develop a PSVR game. It'll be very interesting.
Well I'm still waiting for this one, even if nobody else is, I look at it as Minecraft for adults. But I'm beginning to think PSVR on PS5 at this rate.
Wow. no wonder it seems like forever, they first showed the tech demo nearly 4 years ago at the PS4 reveal. 4 years is a long time.

Fortunately my PS4 games list is long enough now that I don't need Dreams anytime soon.
Definitely going to be a hard sell.. I feel that a lot of work will be wasted on something that very few people are interested it. Still, it looks interesting, just not really my thing. I rather have two Tearaways instead of Dreams, and the former option would probably be done earlier anyway.
Dreams is definitely something different, but I've yet to see someone be genuinely excited for it.
@get2sammyb
I think the comments section iterates just how difficult marketing this game will be.
Anything Media Molecule gets my interest!
I really want to get into Dreams, but I just can't. I love all their other work, but this seems so directionless.
Doesn't this offer PSVR support as well?
Do you need to sign up for the beta?
@get2sammyb I agree. These doing this type of game may find some very talented people out there who can get into the arts of game makin.
It was shown last at E3 2015, which is the first time it was shown. Surely they must have something more by E3 2017.
I really dislike Media Molecule. They're like the innocent smoothie of gaming. Or the Hive advert. If they were a person they'd be playing 80s power ballads on a ukulele thinking they're oh so quirky, when really you just want to throw them in the sea.
It's a matter of taste though.
Anyway, Dreams is going to sell roughly three copies and critics will bemoan the general public's tastes. For once I'll be on the general public's side.
