There's a new PlayStation 4 firmware update out, but given the low-key nature of its deployment, you can probably hazard a guess at its purpose. Weighing in at 312.3MB, the patch promises to "improve the quality of the system performance". No material changes, then.
This one appears to be optional as we were able to connect to the PlayStation Network while it was downloading. Still, whack your system in Rest Mode and you should be able to pull this while you're away from your platform, preventing any restart issues when you're ready to play.

Can't be important as its optional.... Maybe adjusting some of the UI - like adjusting some text which doesn't change its function or a slight tweak to how resources are allocated/used but doesn't affect them working.
All those PS4 that get sold this month but not opened until Christmas morning are so going to be slamming the servers. Maybe they made this one optional just so that doesn't happen? Could Sony be that forward thinking? Does everybody boot up the system before Christmas just to make sure it works? hmm, that seems like a valid excuse. Maybe play some FFXV demos just to make sure everything is working ok.
@rjejr PSN will be down at crimbo for certain. Out will crawl persons on high horses stating 'haven't you anything better to do' etc etc
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi hacking a multi million gaming network on Christmas day.
no high horse needed. they need to get a life
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Oh God your right!

I'll be out all day Christmas and that night is Broncos - Chiefs (NFL game w/ playoff implications, and a rematch of the best game I've watched this season) and then I'll be out all day on Monday as well, then Monday night is Cowboys-Lions, so I'll avoid the PSN crush. I'll probably sleep Tuesday until noon. Then it's 5 straight days of gaming, sleeping and eating. But I still think I'll need to set up the Slim before then and try to squeeze it back in the box to wrap it b/c now I'm worried about something going wrong.
@rjejr I abhor this more recent trend of opening gifts early to "set them up" as a child (and as an adult) one of the best parts about getting something new is opening it up. Breaking that seal on the shinny new toy. My brother-in-law sells cell phones, and when he opens them to set them up, in front of the customer, he can see the point when that little bit of light and happiness evaporate. Taking that away from someone is not worth it. You may not care about that aspect of it, but don't take that away from others.
@thedevilsjester I see your point, which is why I haven't done it yet. I did open the box and look into it to make sure it was all there, but then I put it all back.
But the difference w/ a gift today and a gift 10 or so years ago, gifts didn't require several Day 1 firmware updates to get them working 10 years ago. I got my kid a NeS Mini, I know that will work right out of the box, just plug it in. But on the PS4 there will be updates and setting up everybody's account, it could take awhile before we get to play. So I'm still undecided.
When we got a PS3 6 or 7 or 8 years ago, whenever it was, I set up everything beforehand and put it all back, but my kids were too young to notice anything. Now I think there old enough that they would be more mad at me for NOT setting it up beforehand so that they could just open it and play. So if I don't set it up beforehand, and Christmas morning or whenever, my kids yell at me for not doing it beforehand so they could get right to playing faster, I'm telling them "the devil made me do it".
Is Sony pulling a Nintendo?
@mmarkster LOL!
"System stability" indeed.
