The mystery surrounding Death Stranding's engine has finally been revealed: it'll run on Guerrilla Games' proprietary software. The tech, which is also being used for Horizon: Zero Dawn, has now been given an official name: Decima. It's the latest version of the engine that previously powered the Killzone games.
This isn't the first time that Guerrilla Games' tech has been licensed out: it was also used for Until Dawn. The naming of the engine, along with it becoming a little more product-focused, suggests that more of Sony's first-party projects may share the engine moving forwards, however.

So a 30fps game then? We were told that Horizon:ZD can't run at over 30fps because pf the engine...
@BAMozzy Given how ridiculously bleeding edge the Death Stranding trailers have been, I don't think we should be surprised it (probably) won't be 60fps.
Maybe it's just me but I don't think 60 FPS is the end all be all that everyone else seems to think it is. It's a nice bonus but not a must for me.
@get2sammyb You forgot the best part, Hermen Hulst and Mark Cerny are going to be characters in Death Stranding
@Octane lol.
@get2sammyb There is a difference between a CGi trailer and a 'game'. CGi trailers can be at 24fps - the same as movies.
I have no issue with a locked 30fps, it can (with good frame pacing) feel smoother than an unlocked 60fps. I still don't know exactly what the game is supposed to be as that can have more influence over the importance of a 60fps - I doubt its a CoD style fast paced shooter. Of course I would prefer ALL games to be 60fps but I also know that the console hardware isn't always able to deliver and 30fps hasn't affected Uncharted for example.
@Splat Its once you play games in 60fps regularly that 30fps becomes more obvious. I played Rocket League, MGS PP and Rogue Legacy at the same time, moving back to Driveclub at 30fps it didn't look right and it felt like a flicker book and felt heavier, same with the witcher and Bloodborne. At the end of the day 30fps is better than wonky frames all over the place. Lets see how this plays out, it could release when holographic screens are all the rage.
Never understood the 60 fps fetishism. It's undoubtedly better for certain genres, but most games don't suffer at all by sticking to 30 fps.
@BAMozzy But they said from the start the Death Stranding trailer is running in realtime on PS4 Pro.
@get2sammyb Its not unheard of for a game to have an incredible CGi cutscene running on a console. I know you probably never played the Witcher 2 on XB360 but the opening cutscene/movie on that looked better than PS4 game graphics. Some of the 'realtime' cutscenes this gen have looked incredible but doesn't mean the game runs at that level in all details. Some games have used 30fps cutscenes too to improve the visual look whilst the game runs at (up to) 60fps.
Until I see actual game-play, then that means very little...
@BAMozzy
My money is on third person MGS style. Kojima will want to do something that is kind of like a spiritual successor to MGS, since he can't tell that story any more, all whilst exploring other ideas he's had festering in that crazy head of his.
I doubt it'll be a FPS, that would be a great deal different to anything he's ever done before.
I don't mind when they cast famous actors to voice the characters. Just not a huge fan when they use their likeness as well.
@Ralizah I guess it's one of those things that is a matter of preference for most, if they can afford it. I run most of my PC games at 120-144fps, because i can feel a tangible difference in overwatch, battlefield 1, rocket league, witcher 3, rise of the tomb raider, and doom compared to 60 or 30 fps. Having said that, a well made game at 30 is just as good to me.
@Splat Yup, with the exception for some genre like fps and fighting game, 60 fps is a bonus, if gamer want 60 fps all the time they have to buy a pc and upgrade all the time too.
What a strange bunch the difference between 30 and 60 fps is night and day I suspect many of you haven't played on a good PC or didn't game years ago when it was standard even on consoles.
@GBMatthew I own a good PC but if the game runs a 30 FPS i can life with it. If the game is good and fun i can look beyond the 60 FPS. To be honest most people just complain to complain.
@BAMozzy That doesn't mean the game will automatically be 30fps, most game engines are modifiered to suit the dev's needs depending on what sort of game thay are making. The engine used on Arkham Knight was modifiered, COD engine has been modifiered god knows how meny times.
@Flaming_Kaiser NO 900p vs 1080p is petty complaining.
We can all live with it if a game is locked at 30 fps and we have no other choice. But come on let's not pretend that there isn't a big difference between the two and given the choice 99% of people would always choose the 60 fps option over 30 (except console fanboys of course).
I don't know a single PC gamer who would say that 30fps is acceptable for gaming.
The limiting factor with all these recent consoles is their poor mobile CPUs.
kz shadow fall's multiplayer runs at 60fps, so the engine can do it. whether or not it can do it with the graphical fidelity of the death stranding trailer is another matter.
