For this author's money, the best ending of the year is a toss-up between The Last Guardian and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End β but the former may have just stolen the crown from atop Drake's head due to an Easter egg that's only just been discovered. If you haven't finished Fumito Ueda's fantasy favourite just yet, then we'd urge you to look the other way now β spoilers sit within.
Seriously, there are major story spoilers below this point. You have been warned.
Is the coast clear? Okay, so as you (hopefully) know, the title ends on a tearjerking note with Trico being separated from the boy, and the pair being forced to live separate lives. But in the post-credits sequence, a group of villagers find the boy's shield, which is used throughout the adventure to direct Trico.
When the boy holds up the shield, we're treated to a gorgeous fly-through the game world, which ends with a shot of Trico in his cave and a baby catbird. But there's been much debate as to whether the Trico seen in the final scene is the one from the adventure. Well, there can be no doubt now: if you press circle (the same button used to operate the shield) the catbird's horns light up, confirming it is the same animal.
It's just a wonderful touch from Ueda which only serves to elevate the game in our eyes. What other Easter eggs could be crammed into the release? We're sure that more will be uncovered over the months and years ahead.

Mind blown! I never doubted that it was Trico in the cave, but it's so awesome that this is secretly stuffed into the game.
I didnt even see the 2nd pair of eyes!
@daveyboyps101 Haha!
Couldn't it just as well the the other Trico we see while OUR Trico is making his escape with the boy? I mean, they both have horns.
Also... that ending soundtrack... 11/10
@NathanUC My interpretation is no because only the boy's Trico reacted to the shield if I remember correctly.
@get2sammyb I'll have to test over the long weekend. I'm close to that part in my current playthrough, but I thought they all had some sort of reaction (minus the tail that is). My fiancee and I disagree on this. I believe it's my Trico, she thinks it's the other one since both eyes look perfect.
Also... I didn't think to check but can you tell if they are boy or girl Tricos? I'll have to look....
Personally, I don't feel that's our Trico. I think that's the female Trico that you sort-of fight. Our Trico is super passive towards her during that section and the helmet was taken off.
It makes no sense for it to be Trico after what the protagonist says. Besides that, he needs a mate in order to reproduce.
@BertoFlyingFox Our Trico clearly boned the lady Trico and had a baby Trico and our Trico and the baby Trico showed up at the end. That's assuming our Trico was a dude, otherwise she was the bonie. Either way, it's our Trico and his/her offspring. The protagonist wouldn't know either way if Trico lived or died. He assumed, and never knew the truth. A trophy gives another hint that Trico lives on - "Though we are far apart".
Bwuh? What was so great about Uncharted 4's ending? I saw it coming a mile away, and it's not like it was executed perfectly xD
How is this something that's just been discovered?
It's not something you'll easily miss unless you shut of the game immediately after finishing it. :-/
I've seen this the day after the game came out since I finished it in two sittings and people were already talking about this scene all over the internet by then.
@meppi Not the scene itself, but pressing circle makes Tricos eyes react, thus "confirming" it is indeed your Trico and that he lives on.
Assuming that's what you meant. Maybe you're suggesting the pressing circle thing is old news, in which case my bad.
@kyleforrester87
Ah no, I completely missed that part somehow. :-/
Figured it was Trico with a little one, so it's nice to see confirmation.
...How is this mind blowing?
This is some pretty basic storytelling trope stuff.
Do people just not read any more? Actually, this probably more common in films.
It'd be nice if this game... Worked...
I really wish Team Ico were put in charge of the aesthetics of a game with good mechanics and a less pretentious story.
@TheGZeus What do you mean do people not read? I don't quite get your comment
Hey I have avoided reading the article but how long is the storyline in this game approximately? I am an adamantoise away from the platinum in FF15 and was looking for another game.
@belmont There is a trophy for completing the game in under 5 hours which imo is impossible on a first play through & another for finishing in under 30 hours.
Think it It took me about 16/17 hours first time around, cause I got stuck a few times.
@kyleforrester87 I feel all the trico species would react to the shield if they werent wearing that helmet. Which is probably why the shield was found amongst slave trico in the first place.
I took the meaning of "Trico lives on" to suggest that the species lives on through the other trico and her offspring. Pretty sure that was the plot device in motion there, but it is vague enough to go either way so we'll never know for sure unless the developer explains it themselves.
@kyleforrester87 Because it's such a tired old trope.
It's in hundreds if not thousands of books and has been around longer than books.
"OMG WHAT A TWIST!" Not really.
These games hold no appeal for me. They control terribly, the mechanics are janky at best, and the stories are tired and pretentious.
"OMG WONDA WAS THE BAD GUY!" No crap. He was obviously a selfish twit from the opening cutscene. Skyrim has a better story, and I never bothered with main quest in skyrim, because it's stupid.
Again, they make great environments and designs. They just don't make good games.
@theGZeus this is your second warning now, please watch the language. -Tasuki-
