We're pretty big fans of the Sony Gold Wireless headset here at Push Square. While there are better sounding headphones on the market, we reckon that the official cans have a pretty great balance of quality, affordability, and usability. So we're pretty stoked that the Japanese giant's finally dated the Platinum Wireless headset: 12th January in North America and 16th January in Europe.
These cans are a step up from their predecessor, offering simulated 7.1 sound powered by Sony's proprietary 3D audio technology. Packing two 50mm speaker drivers, noise cancelling microphones, and a built-in rechargeable battery, these sound like the business to us. Even more excitingly, they'll interface with virtually any USB device, and will be compatible with PlayStation VR.
The most exciting thing is that the platform holder's actually going back and patching a handful of older games to support 3D audio, with Uncharted 4: A Thief's End among them at launch. Those of you that have played PlayStation VR will know just what a difference 3D audio makes; it simply adds to the immersion of existing in a virtual space. And future titles like Days Gone will support it, too.

This is pretty exciting stuff, and we're looking forward to taking them for a spin ourselves. Are you in the market for a new pair of headphones? Will you be looking into these, or do you already have some top of the line cans? Hear everything more clearly in the comments section below.

Huh, what's the difference between the 7.1surround sound of the Gold headset and this 3D sound?
Why the gold headset is my favorite of any I tried...but it is a PIECE OF CRAP in terms of durability! I always treated them nicely and after 2 and half years they have the top plastic all broken in various places and the sponge part is getting out...
If this one is better in durability then maybe I might consider getting it!
I'd go for the Turtle Beach 520s, which is the improved version of the 500p. With their current price tag of €100 they're cheaper than this unit, and if the Gold headset is anything to go by they'll offer a far superior build quality. The quality of the mic is also way better than what the Gold headset offered and although 3D sound is really fun, you can't beat the easy accessible "superhuman hearing" option on the Turtle Beach headset.
@AFCC Have you considered the above mentioned headset? Amazon Germany sells them for €99.
how much better will these be vs the Sony gold wireless set? I know the gold has 7.1 surround and noise cancelling microphone already. i'm all for a better headset but will this be better?
@AFCC I have two PS Gold headsets and have had the hinges break on both of them within the first couple months. I love the sound quality and the comfort they provide, but in terms of durability they are indeed pieces of crap. I actually had to super glue and electric tape the hinges to make them durable. They can't collapse, but they're pretty indestructible now.
I am a sicker for headphones so I'll be picking these up. I hope they're more durable than the Gold headsets though. The hinges are absolute garbage on them. Or I might just spring for Astro A50s.
I do want a new headset, have had the Gold for so long still intact.
I'm defiantly getting it.
Haha my gold headset literally arrived this week.... D'oh. First headset I have ever owned for a console. Enjoying them so far. That said, I paid just under fifty pounds for the 2.0 headset, whereas the platinum set looks to be starting at around £120 so doubt I would have been in the market for these just yet.
here, take my money
My Golds haven't snapped yet but it's only a matter of time. These look like they're gonna be similarly prone to breaking.
Hope the battery life is a little longer as well.
@AFCC same here. I've had the gold headset for a little over a year and a half and the hinges are starting to give out and has issues connecting from time to time as well. Will probably spring for these but hoping they're of better quality.
@redd214 the thing that bothers me the most with the headset is that they are still costly...I know they are cheap compared to others in the market, but they are expensive enough not to break on you after a couple of years. What a shame...
@Constable_What mine has black tape all over xD
@Boerewors 99€ is a good enough price for me, I'll consider.
Never been a fan of gaming headsets. Would much rather have a decent pair of open back music headphones and seperate mic.
@viciousarcanum
7.1 gives you the wide range of surround sound so that things behind you sound like they're behind you. I'm not quite sure how 3D sound would work in a normal game, but in VR it adjusts the sound based on head position. You hear where a sound is coming from no matter where you're looking.
