Square Enix has revealed that Final Fantasy XV has shipped over six million units worldwide. That figure includes copies shipped to retailers and digital sales, meaning that we don't quite know how many units the game has sold through to the public. As we always say, though, retailers generally aren't in the habit of buying stock that they don't need.
All in all it's a pretty solid number, and we imagine that a game like Final Fantasy XV will have reasonably long legs, especially as prices starts to tumble. It's also worth mentioning that the title is close to hitting one million sales in Japan - and that's no small feat for a PlayStation 4 release these days.

Good number. I guess the retailer discounts will dictate whether they overshipped or not.
I think I remember an article on Push Square where they said it needed to sell 10 million copies in its lifetime to be a success. I think it probably has enough legs to get there....
Nice to see a game selling well after a season of so-so game sales.
They said they needed to sell 10 Million to make a profit for the whole thing.
@Rudy_Manchego
It has the legs, it's Final Fantasy, but I wonder if that will be enough. The 10 million mark they need to hit is based on the sales of full priced games; if the game can't do 10 million at $60 they don't just lose an awful lot of money on XV, it actually means that putting out a FF game on this scale isn't profitable.
DLC probably won't cut it and I think the season pass sales are very low at this point, based on Tabatha's indecision how to release extra content. The game was on sale even before it launched at lots of retailers and after just 2 weeks I was able to gift someone a copy for just €30... there goes your profit.
Gamers say: "ha! Squeenix shipped them copies, so it's the retailers problem", but it doesn't work like that. If the retailers have to discount the price so heavily to sell through a certain game, they make a deal with the supplier; either they take some of the games back, or they have to offer a discount on the next batch of games (or anything else) the store is buying of them.
So I can see this game eventually doing 8, even 10 million, but they'll never make enough money to warrant a sequel of this scale. Maybe if Squeenix really believes in Tabatha's vision and is prepared to let him work his magic from day one so the game won't feel as patched together as FFXV, but I don't know if the FF brand is worth that much money to them after FFXV tbh.
Hmmm, I wonder how this will affect the series going forward (even though the numbers are on par with FFXIII's lifetime sales, and that got two sequels).
Anyway...I'VE GOT MY COPY. And honestly, as hyped as I've been for this, starting off the game with fetch quests just kills it for me. Saving it for a later day!
What's the Sony/MS split? Anyone?
This game will have legs as they keep adding stuff and dropping the price on a regular basis. I wonder about that 10 million number to make a profit though. Do all 10 million also have to buy the $25 season pass? Because if that 100 hundred hour long game that took 10 years to make is worth $60, the DLC probably cost them $1.25, not $25. So, 10 mil no season pass or 8 mil and 4 mil buy the season pass? I can't imagine any company plans on 100% season pass ownership. Plus they made some money, I'm sure, on the hardcover guide, film, $450 Slim bundle and $200 collectors set. Though I suppose they could gave lost money on the film and wrote it off as marketing budget or something.
If they want to sell another 500k, Switch version.
@Boerewors "The 10 million mark they need to hit is based on the sales of full priced games;"
If they wanted to sell 10 mil at "full price" then they shouldn't have released it over the holidays, everything goes on sale over the holidays. And they also shouldn't have released it on Xbox One. From what I saw the Xbox version was being discounted first, PS4 version days later. Not in ads that are planned weeks in advance, but online at sites like NewEgg. My guess is Xbox sales were abysmal, those copies had to have sharp discounts to move any copies, then the PS4 copies had to be lowered once the X1 copies started moving at the lower price. As few copies as they probably sold on Xbox, they probably could have made more money making it a PS4 exclusive and just focus on that, rather that spending money on the port to the inferior hardware.
Still, maybe MS threw some money their way, but Nov 30th was always asking to be discounted for the holidays, it's a big draw game, retailers compete on sales of big draw items. Seems like the big stores took turns, each week having the game $10 or $20 off all throughout the holidays. I don't think those sales were due to poor game sales, I think they were due to retailers wanting the attention. But if they wanted it at $60 for 3 months, March or May would have been a better release window.
If indeed they do need to hit 10 million they may be hard pressed. But I expect they will make up for the shortfall with the DLC packs? Also it makes sense why they are splitting FF7 up into instalments.
They don't need to sell 10 million copies to break even lol, it was the developer's "dream spot" for lifetime sales. 6 millions in less than 2 months is pretty good! I hope Tabata gets to do another main game following his vision from day 1 ;_;
@get2sammyb @ShogunRok You guys left out the most important part of the tweet, the Carnival starts January 24th.

Sony sent me $10 on PSN (I think they did that for everyone who purchased a PS4 recently) to use by Sunday, I'm leaning towards the FFXV Season pass. There is nothing on sale this week and I'm guessing the season pass will stay $25 for awhile. Considered Rocket Cars for $19.99, but w/ my luck it would be on PS+ next month. I doubt the FXV season pass would be on PS+ unless bundled w/ the game.
If you guys have any suggestions for $10 I'd like to hear them. I'm not pre-ordering GR2 or H:ZD b/c I can get $12 off each w/ my Amazon Prime, and I'm old, I still like my game cases on my shelf, I tend to use PSN credit or money for digital only stuff. I can't get infamous First Light b/c I haven't played 2nd Son yet, though it is tempting. I've convinced myself 2nd Son will be on PS+ eventually.
Oh, and what's w/ the limited PS+ Limited trials on PS4? There are only 5, and for lame games at that. System is so much better technically than PS3,I assumed almost every game would have one. At least there are a few demos. But no, PS+ can't even get good game trials these days.
