Gravity Rush 2 has floated straight to the top of the latest Japanese software charts, shifting 74,361 copies. Certainly not an amazing number, but it's not quite terrible either, and it's an improvement over the sales of the original Gravity Rush. In any case, it's nice to see Kat at least make it to the summit - even if she didn't have much competition to deal with.
Indeed, the only other new entry worthy of mention is Valkyria Revolution, which placed third on PlayStation 4. That statement seems reasonably positive until you look at the actual numbers and realise that SEGA's latest only sold 38,197 copies, which is rather dire. Could it be that the gameplay's shift away from the series' strategic roots didn't go down well with Japanese fans? It's entirely possible.
Meanwhile, the PS4 is still sitting relatively pretty at the top of the hardware charts, although sales are down week-on-week, with the system selling 26,243 units this time around. It's worth mentioning, though, that PS4 sales are actually up year-on-year, meaning that Sony's current-gen console is the only machine that's actually gaining momentum as far as the Japanese market is concerned.

When will we see a list without GTA5 on it?
Valkyria Revolution is a completely different brand with the Valkyria name slapped on it. It doesn't sit well with me either.
Nice to see Gravity Rush doing well.
Gravity Queen!
Well at least the Japanese have better taste than us British. I mean just who the hell is still buying GTA5 in that number this far from release. Can't all be people upgrading.
Oké, i need some help: Yakuza 0 or gravity rush 2?
Thank god for Japan!
I've only managed to put in 3 hours, but so far so good.
I can't help but feel it might have sold better on the vita. Would've been nice as a last gesture before the imminent arrival of the Switch.
Switch and Zelda will set these charts on fire.
@Sanquine Impossible to answer. Both!
Great to see danganronpa in there too. Love the Japanese charts. So much more interesting. Hope danganronpa makes it over sooner rather than later
@finalstan Zelda is not that huge in Japan, though - strangely. But yeas, the switch seems like a perfect fit for the Japanese Market.
@john_c I know, that list made me sad.
That's what they get for destroying my hopes of a good strategy Valkyria game
Looking forward to seeing how Resident Evil VII does there.
@Sanquine
As much as I love Gravity Rush 2, I have to say if you can only get one, Yakuza Zero, and I say that with almost no hesitation. There is just something so damn satisfying about the brutal combat in those games that makes you feel like a complete badass, but the game also doesn't forget to let you have fun in the open world with a bunch of crazy, over the top mini games. Hell I got hooked on the batting cages. There's just so much to do. You more than get your money's worth. This isn't an indictment on Gravity Rush 2 either, just about how awesome Yakuza Zero is. An added bonus, since it's a prequel you can hop right in and not have to worry about being lost in regards to story.
Nice, gravity rush 2 deserve it
On the other hand, valkyria revolution is just too different from chronicles, changing the genre from rpg to action-rpg, the graphics from canvas engine too generic graphics, the characters from the likeable cast of the squad 7 to "five people that plunge an entire continent into a terrible war, sacrificing the lives of countless innocents", no wonder the fan doesn't like it, it's the exact opposite of chronicles.
@Sanquine Both
@Xaessya I just want to see a list without Minecraft in it.
@Sanquine If you want to play a superhero game like Infamous or Prototype, get Gravity Rush 2.
If you want to play a japanese beat em up Simulator with a lot of minigames, Yakuza Zero.
If you are in hurry, get Yakuza Zero. Gravity Rush 2 is great and all, but there's something so epic Yakuza Zero has.
Not surprised that Valkyria Revolution didn't sell well. Man, I remember when they announced the game will be coming to XBO and a lot of Xbox fans were defending game, praising it as if it was their first JRPG (have they even played Stranger of Sword City?) and saying things like "Who cares if it isn't a Tactical RPG anymore, IT IS STILL AN JRPG!".
But they are probably saying that because they haven't played the Chronicles. I mean, if Square decides to revive Lost Odyssey in a form of a Warriors game and changes slightly the tone of the story and the characters, will the fans still be defending it, or will they be pissed like how true fans of the original would act?
I feel bad for gravity rush. I really want to support niche titles, but could only get one this month, and it had to be Yakuza. Maybe next month! Really interested to hear impressions of valkyria when it comes West. I will still consider it if its a good game, but I too am disappointed its moved so far away from what made the original trilogy great. I hope Sega dont look at sales and decide that it is reason enough to kill off the franchise
I really don't think that Valkyria Revolution is in a dire position considering the fact that it outsold a new Kingdom Hearts entry! That's an accomplishment.
Good Job for Gravity Rush 2 ^^
Just played the demo of GR1 and didnt get into it so I also pass out on 2.
Dont get why Valkyria is not so well received ... it Looks amazing!
I mean im a huge Fan of Valkyria Chronicles and when I heard that the new one will be less strategic I wasnt even disappointed cuz I thought hell they know what theyre doing it will turn out great - still lookin Forward though ^^
@consolfreak1982 If you are a huge fan of chronicles you know that everyone loved the strategic gameplay
@Sanquine yep - Im very well Aware of this - just a shame that People wont give a Chance to some new Twist on an already dated and well known Formular - especially Japanese Gamers are not so open minded when it Comes to changing a traditional System and evolving it / expanding on it
@Sanquine Both of them 😋
