There's a law in Japan that states if you're making an open world title you must include a fishing minigame; Final Fantasy XV, New Hot Shots Golf (!!!), and now NieR Automata are evidence of that. Of course, the original release was famous for its rubbish rod action, so we've been eager to see if 2B falls into the same trap β hookline and sinker, like. Haha!
Anyway, Square Enix was on hand to show off the mode during a stream at the Taipei Game Show. Essentially, you use your robot companion as a lure, but nothing was biting during this particularly drab demonstration. We can confirm that there are robo-fish in the final game, though, as proven by these Famitsu screenshots.
The stream also showed off some deserted highway gameplay. Let's be honest, this is not the most riveting showcase in the world, but we already know that the title's looking good after last year's awesome demo. Will you be accompanying 2B and her big butt by the riverside? Hook a big one in the comments section below.

I like the way you use the robot companion to fish.
Fishing minigames in games need to die, seriously.
The fishing game in FF15 makes me want to throw the controller.
Amazon were doing Β£10 back on orders over Β£50 last Fryday so I plaiced an order (along with Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 Remix). Wallet got battered but f-eels good.
Man! I use to love fishing in links awakening and animal crossing i didnt realize this was an open world game!!!? Open world as in OPEN WORLD? Or open as in dragons dogma open world? If this is an honest to goodness openworld game then it is definitely on my radar now! Ps- i wish animal crossing was on ps4
@belmont i didn't find it that bad, certainly played worse ones (Sonic Adventure i'm looking at you)
still at least it's quick to level up the fishing skill so you don't have to do it that often like a certain other skill (GLADIO!, i must have ran around the entire map at least 7 times to get that one)
I no longer buy games that don't have fishing in them π
Canny wait like.
Really, I want this game so bad :/
@FullbringIchigo Sonic Adventure was the epitome of bad fishing, especially if you include the annoying "Froggy??" in the mix.
As for FF15 it was easy to get the trophy but doing the fishing sidequest and catching all the fish is way tedious. Firstly I have read the tutorial, I have seen videos and I still can't understand what I am doing wrong. For big fish I change the analogue pad to where the fish goes without steering but the line ends up breaking quickly anyway while small fish are caught almost automatically. Moreover you have the other three doing bizzare comments randomly.
I will ninja @rjejr and say that if Zelda BOTW does not include fishing, the law is a lie.
This game looks better after I played the demo.
@FullbringIchigo @belmont I hate the fishing minigame in FFXV. Fishing should be fun and it is so far from fun. I never beat that quest w/ the small pond near the chocobo place, and last night I spent over an hour trying to catch the "Liege of the Lake" in Versperpool, I was afraid to get out until I caught the thing b/c I wasn't sure how to get back in w/o camping. I only stopped b/c I lost all 5 of my spools of line. I've decided it's not meant to be fun, it's one of those things like raising worms in Monster Hunter that only appeals to crazy diehard Japanese gamers. So the other 3 have levels of 6, 7 or 8, Nocits is at 1 for fishing.
It just isn't fun.
@sinalefa Oh sure, get me in trouble by mentioning my name and Zelda in the same sentence why don't you.
Zelda almost certainly has to have fishing whether I want it to or not, and he needs to cook his fish on that big campfire stove.
You got me curious so I did a Google search and maybe he doesn't fish since they seem to fall out of the sky or hop out of treasure chests or something.
I've been discussing w/ aaronsullivan if Zelda needs a ND in Feb or not, I'm adding fishing mini game to my list of reasons to have one. The main reasons being list of differences between U and NS versions, and what do all of those amiibo do? Really, why does 1 game need 2 Link amiibo, horseback and arrow, plus wolf Link, plus there are already about 5 other Link, original, kid, OoT, 8 bit. Meanwhile amiibo were supposed to be great b/c 1 toy, many games. W/ Link they have many toys and few games.
The only game I've found to get fishing right recently is stardew valley. Hate it in FFXV and just in general.
@rjejr To be specific, that gif is the Wind Waker Link amiibo at play. It makes fish. And sometimes a chest. And yes, they fall from the sky.
@rjejr
Hey I said Zelda, not Nintendo
I heard you can throw a bomb in the water and "fish" that way. About amiibo, they may do the same thing, with the figurine itself being the change. Like how a red or blue controller both do the same thing but the aesthetics make some people prefer one over the other and completionists go nuts.
I seem to br the only one that likes the fishing in FFXV it took me a while to like it but while going for the fishing trophy i stated to get into it
I have never seen the appeal of drowning works - real or virtual.
@FantasyMeister lol ππ
@sinalefa "This game looks better after I played the demo."
I hated the Nier demo, looked like a $15 PSN game, too many 2D parts, and you know how I feel about 2D. Too brown too, kind of looked like FF12 desert oil taker section.
Probably didn't help I just finished Bayonetta 2, man that game was awesome. Played it on easy but really need to go back and play it on normal. Hard ain't happening though. Nier looked like a PS2 game on PS3 but at least I recall it being all 3D.
Yeah I know, 3 week old thread, better late than never, right?
@rjejr
I guess Bayonetta is the apex of P* games, so anything else by them feels like a Bayo wannabe, except for W101. Congrats on beating that gem. Normal is hard in P* terms so you will do fine. Good thing you can do a NG+ and keep your improvements.
@sinalefa NG+
Bayonetta 2 had that? Would certainly make me want to play it again sooner rather than later, I need to go check, thanks.
@rjejr
I think it is not labelled as such, but you can go back to the beginning with a different difficulty and the game will let you keep your upgrades. If W101 did not have that, I would have never beaten it in the highest difficulties.
@sinalefa Thanks. Playing it on easy I don't think I had any upgrades, didn't make anything, use any items, buy anything, it was basically "god mode" it was so easy. A couple of times I almost switched to normal but I never did.
I did get a few very cool weapons from collecting record pieces, but that was about it.
