There's been a lot of talk about poor software sales this holiday, but the PlayStation 4 is doing its best to keep the numbers up it seems. Alongside its install base announcement, Sony revealed overnight that it moved 50.4 million pieces of software over the Christmas period, which spans the tail-end of November through to 1st January. This accounts for both retail and digital sales.
The figure is significant because last holiday the console shifted 35 million pieces of software, so this is an increase of roughly 40 per cent if our shaky maths are correct. It's positive because it means that both new and existing PS4 owners are buying lots of games for the console, which is a net win for the industry at large. Some positive news at last!

That pic reminds me I have yet to play The Evil Within.
So ps4 sold 6 million on holiday, uncharted sold 8 million, and ps4 softwares sales sold 40% more compared to previous year, all is right in the world
@Splat I've owned that game for about a year now, and have yet to even insert the disc into my PS4.
So what we're saying is that any declining software sales are the fault of the competition? I think these may even have been higher had many like myself not splashed out on the Pro and a TV to take advantage of it
evil within.one of the best games I ever play
So we hit over 50million PS4s, and 50 million units of software are sold. That equates to roughly 1 game per unit.
It doesnt mean new and existing are buying ots of games as individuals. It just means on average one game per system. And when you look at it like that its still impressive but doesnt show lots of existing or new exclusively buying, just picking something up.
But still, its positive.
And yes, sales are down because Nintendo is dead and Xbox cant get games. Has nothing to do with real income or fatigue as well.
There are 53 million PS4 in the world and it sold 50 million games over the holiday, doesn't that mean there was less than 1 game sold per console? And almost every console sold came w/ a game. Seems like a very low number to me, I must be doing something wrong.
@BLP_Software Ah BLPs, man, you ninja'd me by like 30 seconds. Does make me feel better about my math though.
@rjejr Don't think these software sales include bundles. I don't know. Seems fair though. Final Fantasy and The Last Guardian, need to see their sales, but especially the latter won't have sold several million units over the holidays. Then there was COD, Titanfall 2 bombed as we saw. Not sure if Battlefield is still counted as holiday, cause that's even further back. Nothing surprising to be honest.
For example, take the software sold per console for the 360 and PS3, they were the highest of any console and it's around 11 games per console. That's the ratio. Still not impressive at first sight, but all other consoles are even lower (Wii: games; SNES around 8 games, Wii U around 6). If all PS4 gamers bought at least one game during the holiday period and one in the rest of the year, then it would add up to 12 games sold per system after 6 years. And that's a higher tie-ratio than ever console has ever had. Looking at it from this point and it makes sense, it's actually impressive if you consider that apart from their holiday purchase, the average gamer only buy one more game for the rest of the year.
@rjejr As a WiiU/PS4 owner, I'm just happy the latter isn't becoming the former.
It's a better number than I'd figure based on what I was reading all last year.
@rjejr @BLP_ that's loads. The N64 had an attach rate of only 4 games per console lifetime! That's 25% of the way there for Sony in 1 month.
take a look at this;

It may be due to all the price drops over that period.
Most of the negativity is just loud mouth whiners regurgitating misinformation. Its been a very good year for games and its just unfortunate that the end of year pile up hit good games like titanfall and dishonored.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi
Unfortunately the NPD are not 'loud mouthed whiners.' The year-over-year losses that were reported quite frequently were in fact real.
Consumer power!! Ps4 gamers are awesome lol ππ have a fabulous New Year gamers both new and ones who've been there from the start!! For the gamers!!! For the best most friendly gaming community out there!!
@Gamer83 just saw your comment, the figures released recently released prove my point, giant sales over the holiday period for hardware and software nevermind
