Sony chief Shuhei Yoshida has gone on record regarding his Nintendo fandom in the past, stressing that he sees the Japanese giant as an integral part of the gaming industry multiple times. He's also revealed that he's the owner of multiple Wii Us before – despite the fact that he's been banned from MiiVerse on several occasions.
It's no surprise, then, that the affable executive was photographed at the House of Mario's recent Switch event in Japan, taking snaps from the show floor and generally scouting the new system out. Of course, it's not unusual for suits to check out the competition, and Yoshida is a big fan of games in general. We're sure that he'll be there day one to see what the device has to offer.

I still think the switch is going the same path as the wii u
heresy!
@KingofSaiyanZ I think they would be if they hadn't indicated that they want out of the handheld market entirely. I assume they expected Nintendo to come along and eat their lunch eventually, and seeing as they've shown no signs they want to compete in that space, I'd be surprised if they were arsed.
They've chosen to surrender that sector, so...
@KingofSaiyanZ I don't think concern is something Sony can be accused of when it comes to the Vita.
@KingofSaiyanZ Sony demolished the parade themselves years ago, they couldn't care less about Vita
@KingofSaiyanZ Why? Consoles are on the decline but PS4 did pretty well last year. Any games that are coming to Switch will come to PS4 as well unless Nintendo pays for exclusivity.
@JoeBlogs Click the link lol.
@KingofSaiyanZ Even if the Vita was well supported it wouldn't last forever and Sony have nothing else in the pipeline for the handheld market* so it shouldn't be surprising for you
*nothing that we know of, granted, but it's a valid assumption I reckon.
@JoeBlogs once for his twitter account in his profile and the other for having the phrase "I love PS" on his Mii.
Traitor, either you commit to PlayStation or you get out... you can't have your cake AND eat it in this thing called gaming.
That goes for all of you!
As much as the Switch looks ace I think it'll be the new Vita
@Boerewors
I wanted the Vita to be good, I'd buy one if the controls were different.
The ideal design would be a dualshock setup with triggers and clickable thumb sticks with a screen in the middle, that way owners of a PS3/4 don't have to learn a new way of playing, and remember new button placements and way of use.
It's nice that Yoshida can appreciate a variety of gaming platforms, even when fanboys of all stripes can't seem to get past their tribalistic brand loyalties.
I like Playstation AND Nintendo. Each bring something unique and irreplaceable to my gaming life.
The problem with the switch is the total cost of it is too expensive, the console $300, sandisk 200gb sdcard $64, and the pro controller $70 (!!). It's not worth it for zelda alone, I can't justify buying it while the ps4 will be getting a lot of games that I really want to play, like gravity rush 2, yakuza 0, nier automata, horizon, and that's only in the early 2017. Nintendo seems can't make up its mind when making this console, do they want to make it cheap and underpowered for casual like the wii, or expensive/normal price but powerfull for the hardcore like the gamecube, the result is the worst of both world, expensive (including the hidden cost) and underpowered. Nintendo seems can't forget its casual games dreams, it's gone nintendo, they all go to mobile gaming now
Oh well, maybe I'll buy it when they make mario bundle like the wii u and lower the price, there's no way this thing gonna sell when ps4 slim with uncharted 4 sold at $269 on amazon, with no hidden cost and way more storage. It will only sell in the first 2-3 months and it will be like the wii u again. I hope they make a cheaper switch (switch mini) with 5inch screen and no joycon (normal control like psvita/n3ds) and sold the dock separately to cheapen the price.
The joycon is a mistake.
@wiiware The accessory pricing is one thing, but $300 is NOT an unreasonable price for a new console, especially one with cool tech (full portability, HD rumble, etc.) like the Switch.
What IS unreasonable is selling a mini-game collection for $50 instead of including it as a pack-in.
I do like the look of the Switch although I actually like my Wii U because of the great 1st party games. I don't buy Nintendo for the ports of PS4 games I already own or lack thereof.
Not sure what to think of Zelda still. It looks fun enough in the gameplay videos, but I'm wondering if open world was the right direction for this game. I'm not convinced!
@JoeBlogs I already sold my wii u because I thought I will buy switch on launch day
@Ralizah It just that you can't buy the system alone, unlike ps4 that has 500gb, the switch need sdcard, and a big one at that because the switch run AAA console game (not portable game like psvita/3ds), and unlike ps4 that has dualshock4, you need the pro controller because the joycon is too small and doesn't have d-pad. The problem for nintendo is the ps4 uncharted4 bundle price is $269.
Ugh, why the hell nintendo make the joycon anyway, the wii audience is gone, I wish they make normal, not removable controller for the switch and a normal price pro controller ($50 like ds4). Also I never thought that 1,2 switch is a full priced game, that's crazy! Also crazy: pay online, I think this will kill/severely harmed splatoon and mario kart online audience.
@Neolit I really hope nintendo have a mario bundle when that game launch, the game's looks great, more like mario 64 rather than mario 3d world. My prediction is that game will launch on 2018.
Nintendo can't keep alternating say it's a portable, then it's a home console conveniently when somebody ask them question about the switch. Why it's so expensive for a portable? Because it's a home console first say nintendo, then someone ask why it's under powered? they'll answer because it's a portable, and the next person say why the games is priced at $60? home console. But the storage is awfully low for a home console? because it's portable. And so on and so forth.
But still, I think nintendo can recover from this as long as they don't stubbornly keep the price of the system as pricey as this, they need to remember 3ds sell badly at $249 before they lower the price to $169, a price reduction and mario bundle for the switch is a must.
@wiiware All the impressions I've read have said that the joycons are extremely comfortable on the grip. It's only small if you use each one as an individual controller. So no, you definitely won't NEED the Pro controller unless you're playing D-Pad heavy games.
Moreover, if games don't install to the system and don't require huge day one updates, the provided memory will be perfectly adequate for at least launch year (unless you're a digital person, in which case.. yeah, you'll want a big SD card).
I'm a bit concerned about how the move to paid online will affect Splatoon as well, considering Nintendo fans aren't used to paying for online. I'll be mad if Nintendo kills off their one really good online game.
@Ralizah My problem with the joycon is not it's comfortable or not, it's that I don't understand why it exist, it's cool if it can exist without raising the price of the switch, but it seems all it do is raising the system price without benefit, the waggle generation on the original wii is gone, nintendo doesn't need the joycon, not on it's portable system. The storage wouldn't be a problem if the switch is not a home console, but it is. Even nintendo own games have dlc now, like hyrule warrior, mario kart, and of course splatoon.
I want nintendo to make a no compromise full portable system with tv-out, that's it, no waggle, no included dock (sold it separately at $100, I don't care), and of course good battery, direct all the joycon sensor price to it's cpu/battery tech.
I want to preorder the switch before I watch that presentation, I'm not so sure after watching it, and now I'm sure as hell doesn't want to buy it, not at this price, with no bundle. Well at least I have nier automata and horizon zd on march for my zelda fix, I hope that 2 games is good.
@wiiware I mean, I agree that I'd prefer simple removeable controllers without all the tech and gimmicks driving up the price, but then, I also feel the same way about the DS4. I'd MUCH prefer a cheaper controller without the useless lightbar and touchpad, but alas, twas not meant to be.
My only real problem with the Wiimote stuff is that I feel like it's confusing the marketing. Nintendo should have zeroed in on the theme of "play your home console Nintendo games anywhere" and not spent so much time babbling about games that look like they belong on the original Wii. The original concept trailer did SUCH a good job of expressing a simple, compelling message, and that presentation feels like it clouded the message.
I really hope further advertising isn't as confused.
The Glitch looks terrible. Nintendo has lost it's mind.
$299 for old hardware and no games with paid online is a joke.
BotW is pre-ordered for my Wii U, which I will apparently be keeping forever.
I've always liked having Nintendo as a second console, but I'm losing faith in them now.
I bet this is what Shuhei is thinking: "Man, you know what? I should probably support the Vita a bit more".
@SoulsBourne128
LOL! I doubt it.
@PlaytendoGuy it will be lucky be the new vita
Legend.
I've always liked this guy for having an open mind
@Ralizah
That's what I'm saying. Switch is the sexiest console I've ever laid eyes on- they absolutely nailed it out of the park with Switch. This thing is my dream console, no kidding!
The Joycons are definitely the star of the show though. I am so sick and tired of stagnation- I was saying 10 years ago that the perfect controller would be one just like Wiimote and Nunchuk but with 1 dual analog 2 enough buttons 3 cordless 4 modern motion like HTC Vive 5 motion not forced for every game, but that uses regular controls and only allows motion where it fits natural (like Zelda, can use Joycon to aim crossbow, and as I learned from my STEAM controller and gyro, motion aiming is far superior and easier than analog"
Also gonna have
Zelda BotW (best looking game I've ever seen, bar freaking none)
Mario Odyssey (best looking Mario since 64, and open)
Splatoon 2 (sequel to funniest MP shooter I've ever played)
Xenoblade 2 (sequel to best JRPG of all time)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (finally battle mode and 48 tracks)
Fire Emblem Warriors (love Fire Emblem, should be better than DQ Heroes)
Arms (new motion punchout game looks dope, on a roll with new IP)
Bomberman R (who woulda thought lol?)
Dragon Quest XI (console version on the go? Shoot...)
DQ Heroes 1 & 2 (both games bundled together, man I love me some Dragon Quest)
Skyrim (I'd buy the system just for this and Zelda alone, to have on the go)
And the best part is all of these games will be playable on the go, and even in handheld mode the system is as powerful as Wii U (MK8 runs exactly the same undocked as it did on Wii U, docked it jumps from 720p 60fps to 1080p 60fps). Switch is going to be a dope handheld, even as a console it'll be competent (Zelda and Mario and other games look gorgeous).
Is Yoshida the only known face there? All these companies should learn from each other.
Paid online is what the other two have done for years. People wanted Nintendo to modernize, now pay the price.
Memory cards. Well done.
@Ralizah Yeah, the first trailer is way better, no waggle etc, just normal controller that can be split in to 2 (nice, no need to buy a second controller, I first thought). Ds4 lightbar is useless if we're not playing vr, the touchpad is just okay I think, at least the price is normal though, $60 at first and now we can buy it at $40 ish. The batteries can be better though.
@GamerDad66 I think it will be worth it sometime in the future, when at least there's more 1st party game available and especially if there's a cheaper mini version with integrated controller. No way it's worth it at launch though.
@sinalefa
Paid online is fine, as long as it's on the same level as Xbox Live.
@JaxonH The fact that I'll be able to play BOTW and Mario Kart 8 on a gorgeous HD device that is fully portable was enough to convince me to preorder. I don't really want any more home consoles in my life, but a hybrid is THE PERFECT SYSTEM for a person like me who spends a lot of time away from the house, but still enjoys playing games on the TV from time to time.
This is why I like Shu so much - clearly just a fan of games in the first instance, no matter where they come from or who makes them.
As for the Switch, there are some serious pricing issues with certain games and accessories, but overall I'm really excited for it, looks like a great system that will offer me a bunch of different, fun experiences I can't get on PS4 or Vita.
We're a Nintendo first family but we typically buy one of the other systems for the obvious reasons. I think the Switch has a ton of potential, I just don't think it's worth waiting in lines and buying it overpriced on Ebay to own one in March. I think we'll see that the unique tech will offer unique game experiences long term (year 2 forward). Being able to take the Switch to a party and just jump into playing games with people sounds exciting. Being able to meet somewhere with friends and do some old school multiplayer sessions in person sounds refreshing.
Someone over on nintendolife.com said it best. "The more I read about the the Switch, the more it feels like a giant micro transaction in physical form." So not everything is good. Also, the launch lineup is horrific. I'm excited to play Splatoon 2 and the new Mario game looks fantastic too, but they're both a ways off. Zelda looks cool but I can play that on the Wii U if needed. Of course I totally anticipate the next new Monster Hunter game to make it to the Switch.
