Shooting has started on the new Tomb Raider movie, and the paparazzi have managed to snag the first shots of star Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. As you can clearly see from the pictures, the costume appears to have been very much inspired by Crystal Dynamics' reboot, with the much more petite archaeologist rocking a ripped tank top and makeshift bandages.
The scene being shot here portrays the heroine scrambling across a wrecked plane wing, though perhaps it's just a broken beam. Filming's taking place in South Africa at the moment, though we're not sure whether she's cooling down or adding a bit of sparkle in the shot where she's shown pouring water down her chest. Probably a bit of both?
In addition to the Swedish actress, The Affair's Dominic West has also signed up to play Lord Richard Croft, as the movie explores Lara's origins story. There's no word on a release date just yet, but it can't be worse than the Angelina Jolie movies, can it? Let's hope that Vikander's voice coach also does a better job than Camilla Luddington's, who portrays the character in the games.

I really hope this is good. Alicia Vikander is a great actress which will help. It can't be worse than assassins creed and resident evil: final chapter.... Can it? If they are going for rebooted lara as their inspiration, hopefully that means it will be less cheesy than the Angelina Jolie films.
Needs more pointy boobies.
IT'S A JOKE PLEASE DON'T TELL ME I'M OFFENSIVE FOR WOMEN -.-
F*ck yeah! McNulty is in it!
She looks great. Playing through RISE atm and they've nailed the look.
#NotMyLara
You know what, I know they were bad, but I still quite enjoyed the Angelina Jolie films.
She'll probably sound more british than british Camilla Luddington.
It's a shame the previous flicks weren't very good, Angelina Jolie was the perfect Lara Croft.
Day-um!! (That's pronounced like something I'm not sure I can get past the overzealous sensor on hete, he knows who he is.)
@get2sammyb I guess since I'm not from Europe I didn't really mind the voicing in the Tomb Raider games. Is it really that bad from your side of the fence?
She looks a lot like Natalie Portman from those shots, but Vikander looks like a nice fit so far. Hopefully it'll be good.
@AFCC that is very sexist, men can have boobies too
She looks great, as always.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi aha shooting stars, what a show 😂😂
Ahh Dominic West, I see him now and then, he lives 2 blocks over, I've narrowed it down to one of three houses..
...Dom I'm watching you!!!
Don't know what some of you are on about. The movies with Angelina Jolie were awesome and she was perfect as Lara Croft.
Alicia is also a great choice but for different reasons.
@naruball They weren't the worst video game movies, but that's a pretty low standard.
I have a feeling this one might turn out okay though actually.
hopefully she'll be better in this than she was in Jason Bourne
This is clearly based on the rebooted Lara.
Can understand why they picked Alicia as Lara.
Not convinced. Let's see how the movie is.
@get2sammyb
Yeah, that second Mortal Kombat movie and Street Fighter were probably both worse, but the Tomb Raider movies were almost at that level of bad. I can't honestly think of any great video game movies. I enjoyed the first and most recent live-action Resident Evils, at least certain aspects of them, I liked the first Mortal Kombat, other than that, I can't think of too many good ones. RE: Degeneration and Damnation and Ratchet & Clank aren't terrible but not what I'd call great either.
@Gamer83 You forget Super Mario Bros as one of the worst, and Doom as well.
Vikander is a good actress, but she has bugger all tits.
It's just not the same.
I thought Angelina Jolie made a good Lara Croft from that Generation of video games but the film around her character was poor and the sequel was worse.
I think, if you can nail the disbelief of Lara going from scared girl at the start of the game to stone cold master killer by the end then the plot of the reboot Tomb Raider is a good basis for a movie.
@Tasuki
Ah yes, saw DOOM, very forgettable, that's why I didn't mention. Believe or not, I've never actually watched the Super Mario Bros. movie that's why I didn't give an opinion on it. But yeah, I know it's universally considered to be pretty bad.
I wonder if she's going to get impaled on spikes and have to pick up from about a minute before just for the same thing to happen again.
I really hope they stick with the 'darkness' of the new games, all the hanging corpses and little shrines everywhere made it feel like the odds were really against Lara.
@AFCC try saying that to your mamma or sister or aunties! Trust me, watching tomb raider with your rents is a very very uncomfortable 😰
worse than the angelina movies, no. but could be worse than the last two games. speaking of movies I want to see, why is noone working on a TLOU movie? Or better, a TV series. Give them the same budget as Walking Dead, or at least VanHelsing and it should be good to go for a few seasons.
@kyleforrester87 hahahah you stalker
I don't want to be crucified as a SJW or anything - love DOA and Bayonetta, so bear with me - but I think this is terrible for Alicia Vikander: no matter what, she is definitely going to be sexualised after this role. And since she became successful starring in dramatic, almost authorial movies like Ex-Machina and the Danish Girl this seems like a step back. Look at Angelina Jolie...she got a well deserved Academy Award for Girls Interrupted, the after Tomb Raider she really struggled to find nice roles.
She looked (looks) amazing and we all want to stare at beautiful people on the silver screen but it's such a waste, she used to be a talented actress before becoming this..."super hot dangerous woman" brand they turned her into.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Women have better ones lol
Ok guys this article is not discussing the female antamoy, stick to The article on hand. Thanks.
@Feena
If this were the 1990s I'd agree with you, for sure it would be a step back. However, it's a different time, this is a different Lara Croft. She can still be hot without being overly sexualized, all depends on how they portray her in the movie.
@Gamer83 I hope the movie turns out as fine as the game reboot did. As for sexualization of the main character, it may be less exploitative than in the 90s but I doubt it won't be there at all (Assassin's Creed did this too)...Anyway, she looks very natural in the pics, fingers crossed.
