A remastered version of Shenmue and its sequel will apparently release this year, according to a "trusted" Atlus source who spoke to Rice Digital. The two games will apparently deploy as a single package rather than separately, and are being prepared ahead of the release of Shenmue III, which is currently slated for 2017 but is expected to slip into 2018.
SEGA's been teasing a remaster for some time now, and hope was further reinforced by the registration of ShenmueHD.com domain names. The publisher has cited licensing issues as one of the reasons behind its reluctance to re-release the classics, but we suppose it could get away with simple texture swaps.
As huge fans of the Shenmue games, we'd love to see this series brought back from the brink and made relevant to a new audience all over again. The originals are particularly antiquated these days, though, so it'll be interesting to see the reaction from gamers who have grown up with more modern open world titles.

it's definitely coming this year e3.and I hope also for a Sega genesis collection with 70 games
I've always wanted to play the Shenmue games, so I hope this is true.
This is going to be an interesting E3.
question is what about the second game because if i remember right the english dub (which i'm guessing all these games will have if it's relased) was done and owned my Microsoft, it's why Shenmue II on the Dreamcast ONLY had subs so COULD the remasters be Xbox exclusives? or would any NON Xbox version be sub only?
@FullbringIchigo SEGA has done goofed if it releases these as Xbox exclusives.
@get2sammyb if MS still have some rights to it though they may have too
I'll have to wait until it's confirmed to be excited about it, but I really hope it's true.
@FullbringIchigo I think they probably wouldn't bother if that was the case. They'll want this on PC, too (and not Windows Store before y'all start!)
@get2sammyb well i hope so
I still have the DC version of the 1st game if it's true I'd be interested the 2nd game as a standalone
Idc when it comes, I just want it to happen. Swapped textures, subtitles, just do it!
The most successful KS for a game ever more than proves the interest is there.
Still got my original dreamcast discs at home. To this day both 1&2 are among my favorite games. Signed up at Kickstarter the moment I saw the campaign news for 3. Happy they finally revive this great series.
@FullbringIchigo just looked online. Shenmue 2 never came to dreamcast in English in America, that's shinMS jumped in and got the right and recorded audio but it was supposedly terrible.
The Japanese version on dreamcast had full Japanese audio. So these new ones will probably be Japanese voices with English subtitles. Or they may re-record the audio if it really was as bad as people make out
I played through Shenmue 2 a year or so ago and boy oh boy it has not aged well! It was very hard to play and enjoy. However, I have every faith that Shenmue 3 will bring the series gloriously into the here and now
I am so ready!
It has not aged well at all but it's different from everything...it can find an audience.
It would be about time.
But I wont believe it until I have the box in hand.
Yes! Please!
"Do you know where I can find Chinese people?", "Have you seen a black car on the day of the incident?" and "Hahaha...your so cute." Shenmue may get some flak with it's voice acting, but I still find it charming to this day. Love to play an HD re-release of it. Maybe that will get the ball rolling on a few other must have Sega titles that need a fresh coat of paint.
I will get this for sure. Hopefully there's a steelbook edition.
Finished Shenmue 1 & 2 back then on the Dream machine. Would absolutely love to play it again on the PS4! Glorious !
@sinalefa
Exactly.
They must have little faith in this series. Nobody backs him so he has to go the Kickstarter route, even then with $10 mil (or was it 6mil?) it takes years for them to toy with the idea of remastering the first 2...
Only reason I'm interested is cause I heard they were good games back in the day. And you, I backed on your recommendation
Definitely buying this straight away if true. Not sure how well it has ages but will get regardless
I will buy it instantly, never player Shenmue 1 and 2
@JaxonH
6 millions, yes. Almost 70,000 backers. The numbers are there.
Games may be dated now but they were huge at the time. Hoping 3 delivers.
