Who remembers the casino stage from Sonic Adventure, then? Y'know the one: there's a NiGHTS into Dreams pinball table among other awful minigames. This new level from Yooka-Laylee reminds us of that classic Dreamcast sandbox stage; you even have to gather up casino coins and cash them in in return for a Pagie, much like the Blue Blur has to in return for an Emblem -- or whatever they were called in that game.
Honestly, the environment does look a little empty to us, but we suppose that's part in parcel for the Nintendo 64 "feel" that Playtonic's targeting here. The good news is that there appears to be lots of secret areas and objectives for you to complete, as well as some cool abilities for the eponymous protagonists to master -- we particularly like the bubble which appears to have a Metal Mario effect.
This game's finished now so you've not got long to wait until it's in your hands. Excited?

Can't wait. I'm a backer, getting the Switch version via backing but also gonna get a physical copy on PS4.
It looks a bit flat and empty to me; I would have liked to have seen them add a bit more energy to the stage. Some spotlights and strobe lights would have done the trick, I think.
I do love these kinds of games, though.
If available on Switch on launch day, buying it on that platform. Otherwise, buying it for PS4.
@get2sammyb
You got the white Chaos Emerald for depositing 400 rings during Sonic's story. Emblem rewards are optional on replays via the Trial menu, and the only one that required depositing 400 rings again was the time based Mission A.
Casinopolis was fun though.
And its a miracle Im not single.
@BLP_Software I thought it might have been a chaos emerald, couldn't quite remember. Dammit!
@get2sammyb I know what you mean about it seeming empty. There's a lot of blank floor space. I do like the aesthetic of the stage, though, and the platforming challenges look fun. I'm wondering if this is what the stage looks like before it opens up? They've said many times that the levels get bigger and more complex after a certain point.
I backed Yooka-Laylee so I'll be playing it regardless, but I'm personally really looking forward to it. Ratchet & Clank last year was extremely fun, and refreshingly cheerful. There's nothing quite like a decent platformer
It doesn't look quite as nice as other levels I've seen but I can't wait for this game, Ratchet and Clank has certainly whetted my appetite for more 3d platformers
It's hard to wait much longer for this game to release... let alone wait for the Switch version!
"among other awful minigames."
Yes, the awful two pinball tables in that level.
In seriousness, I know what you're talking about. The minigames throughout the game were pretty meh, but the pinball tables were actually not that bad.
I have to agree, it does look like sonic adventure, but a bit emptier
@DerMeister Wasn't there like a rubbish kart racer? That might have been in a different area actually.
It looks a bit emptier than expected bit at least they haven't gone full Donkey Kong with collectibles. I've backed this on kickstarter and now have to decide whether to get the disc version with the toybox or stay digital, in either case this looks like a return to the golden era of 3D platforming before rubbish like Skylanders ruined it. What with this and Toejam and Earl later in the year it'll be like being a kid again.
@Alpha2797 this won't be on Switch until later this year at best, I'd doubt they've even begun to port it at this point
@carlos82 Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. Going to have to buy it on PS4.
The framerate is so much smoother on PC as compared to PS4. I'll probably just get it on Steam. If the game is running at 30 fps on PS4, I can't imagine it'll perform any better on Switch.
@Alpha2797 I was contemplating changing mine to Switch but this was sent to backers last week
We continue to work closely with Nintendo on plans for a Nintendo Switch version of Yooka-Laylee and more details will be revealed in the future. We’d like to thank our many Nintendo fans for their continued patience and understanding while we form our plans: we hope to make your platform of choice a great place to experience Yooka-Laylee in the future!
@get2sammyb The kart racer was in the Twinkle Park level. I will never forget Sonic Adventure to this day!
Great to see some more stuff from Yooka Laylee. I'm a back for a PS4 digital copy so I will be pleased when this arrives on my doorstep!
@get2sammyb Yeah, the racing was in Twinkle Park, both at the start of Sonic's level and as a separate thing. It was kinda crud.
Cannot wait for Yooka Laylee definitely getting the physical version on the PS4.
@carlos82
Yeah I'm switching my Wii u to ps4 then getting the switch version later for some local multiplayer fun
This looks way better than that Horizon garbage. Buy this game instead
