PlayStation 4 firmware update 4.50 is set to release tomorrow, according to post over on Reddit. Said post sources a technical support email from Sony, which supposedly lets slip that the update is incoming. "With the release of System Software Update 4.50 tomorrow there will be a patch to version 2.40 of the PS VR firmware," it reads, answering the user's query with regards to the headset.
The 4.50 beta has been going on for around a month or so now, so the timing of the firmware's launch makes sense. In case you're out of the loop, the update promises a slew of PS4 improvements, adding external hard drive support alongside custom wallpapers, while also giving Pro users access to Boost Mode.
Are you ready for this update? Prepare your external storage in the comments section below.

Ps4 pro ready!
Yay, wondered when this would launch!
OH i hope so, i REALLY need that External HDD support
also been saving loads of pictures to transfer over for background wallpapers
Yup, been looking forward to this one. Ext HDD and boost mode especially. Not to mention stereoscopic 3D films via my PSVR. @shogunrok what format will my HDD have to be, fat32 or NTFS?
Ooooh nice one. Got my PS4 Pro this past weekend so interested in trying out boost mode myself.
Looking at getting an external drive somewhere down the line now as well.
Been using the beta update and well chuffed with the new additions. Tested boost mode, 3D VR which was great and external drive tested. Looking forward to the official release.
Bring back those poor uninstalled games back to life!
@blakey78
PS4 only supports two of these file systems—FAT32 and exFAT. Go for exfat
@YETi so any limit on the type of External HDD you can use, does it have to be self powered for instance (i assume that it's OK for you to say)
Thanks for the info @YETi
Finally! I've genuinely had FIFA17 & GoW 3 Remastered on permanent pause in my download queue for over a month. Need that extra storage!
Also looking forward to custom wallpapers
@FullbringIchigo
8TB max. More info - http://blog.us.playstation.com/2017/02/03/ps4-system-software-update-4-50-features-detailed/
My HDD is self powered and haven't tried any other way, sorry. BTW I'm just a gamer who signed up to test the beta, nothing more
External hdd support is nice.
@Fight_Teza_Fight i have about 7 boxed games ready to go, just need this update to drop ^_^
i hope this turn out true because Sony didn't announce news about this yet but i expected they annnounce it today later in evening or afternoon
I hope so. Got both Mass Effect and MLB The Show 17 on my list for later this month and am hoping I don't have to clear stuff on the internal harddrive to make room.
@Fight_Teza_Fight just finished gof of war remastered 2 days ago, it was a blast i hope u have fun with it too 😄
@Neolit I've been enjoying the beta for a few weeks now and it's a great update, no more juggling my library (especially now with VR) and I've lost count how many times I've changed the background. Even better if you have a Pro to squeeze a bit more performance out of those old games
Hope it addresses this lag issue thats recently started on the dashboard/home screen. Didnt bother me initially, but now I know it exists, it has started to irritate - particularly when wanting to access Netflix etc.
Just to clarify, you can run games off the external hard drive, correct?
@Bliquid
I would yes because of the larger file system available on exFat.
Didant realize this update was going to be here so quick.Looking forward to finally being able to use external memory...oh wait,I only have two usb sockets,one for VR and one for charging controllers..
@YETi what external hard drive did you use
@Neolit thank you!
@Trickymason just an old seagate Barracuda 1TB I had lying around. I was just testing but I'm after something more substantial.
@Bliquid hahah I'm not as smart as I thought . Joke was too clever my friend.
@Neolit wouldn't the PS4 format it to the correct one anyway?
Finally! I've been checking this site every day for this news!
I can't wait to test Just Cause 3 and Sniper Elite 3 with Boost mode!
I was 'ready' for this a year or so ago - well the External HDD support. It would have saved me having to buy a 'small' upgrade for the same cost as a much larger option and then easier to transfer everything to my PS4 Pro...
Still better late than never!
Awesome!
@Bliquid That has nothing to do with Sony, that's Blizzard.
Looks like I will be picking up my external Harddrive tomorrow
Just hope it doesn't corrupt any of my saves, got past the 1st cauldron boss in Horizon and I made a right meal of it.
@FullbringIchigo Same here, but those are just my digital titles. I have to have digital on my PS4 otherwise I will forget about them in the games library. Once there's a confirmed list of hard drives available I plan to get the biggest one.
@Xaritah I played it on the PS3 and it's one of my favorite games of all time. Drake's Fortune Remastered felt like a completely different game and I hope GoW3 Remastered lives up to that standard. Looking forward to it.
Yes yes and yes. I want to watch my 3d movies on VR.
How will we know when not to use boost mode on the pro. I know its for games without the pro patch. Or is it a suck and see thing.
@Xaritah I agree awesome game!
@Fight_Teza_Fight Yes please let me know which ones so I can add to my Amazon list to buy the hdd
@DragonSlayer1759 You can probably just leave it on unless it causes problems. Pro patched games, I think, don't utilize boost mode so it won't have an effect on those games.
I'm looking forward to speed test on loading times internal vs external HDD's!
@Fight_Teza_Fight i loved it, the only thing that made me mad was in the beggining of the game, there is a bug when jumping from a platform to another, i kept double jumping and kratos didint want to go... i spent 5 minutes in that part of the game 😐
@Giygas_95 jc3 is definitely better!
@get2sammyb Ask PlayStation UK's Twitter confirmed that the firmware isn't coming today and no exact date is known yet.
Booo
@adf86 Cheers!
Oh baby can't wait to grab the biggest HD I can get. I saw one as big as 8TB!! much needed! It's about time Sony!
