After an arduous wait and prolonged beta testing period, PlayStation 4 firmware update v4.50 is live now. The update weighs in at 339.9MB in size, so shouldn't take you long to download; either way, make sure that you have it installed before you sit down to play, because online functionality will be locked until you've updated.
The firmware update adds a bunch of features to Sony's new-gen console, including external HDD support, custom wallpapers, and the PS4 Pro's hotly anticipated Boost Mode, which enhances performance in unpatched games. Have you had chance to try out the new system software yet? What do you think? Let us know below.

Finally! All I cared about was the external harddrive support. All set now for Mass Effect: Andromeda and MLB The Show 17 later this month.
Lol my 2 ps4 controllers both decided to break on me. So I shall have to wait for a while before I can get the download.
Thank you Sony.
well my PS4 is in standby mode so it should all be done by the time i go on it next
Great
@FullbringIchigo Same, all done by the time I'm back home from work, but to be fair it would've been a quick download anyway.
What hard drives do people recommend based on size/price/quality?
Where do you enable boost mode?
Will it improve the store lag, does my head in.
I'm just in it for the boost mode! You got boost power!
@BladeRider I think it's in system settings?
Good stuff, you can have up to an 8TB HD now I wonder if it'll work the same as one's people have installed in their PS4's already, my friend reckon's his speed's up the loading time's etc? Also I wonder if Boost mode will stop the bluescreening that's rife on Ark I stopped playing because of it, at first it was mostly regular PS4's that BS'd but it started happening to me on my Pro it got so bad so I stopped playing for a bit, plan on going back when it's better or released, maybe Beast mode will help.
I'm assuming wireless hard drives won't work with the PS4. Has anyone tried?
That HDD will have to wait. I just spent a lot on Switch and games/accessories. The meager 500gb also taught me to delete old games so I dont need space right now.
I don't like what they did with the notifications menu but other than that good update.
@finalstan it was about 300mb
@RZA_198X Following on from that, I have an external HDD hooked onto my router, which is wired to PS4, will this work? Doubt it but will look for that in the settings later.
Best feature is it's so EASY to back-up your game saves now + The only thing I want SONY to do in the future is include 'ALL' these features on the 'PS5' from DAY 1! Because waiting for some of these basic features each Gen is getting tiresome really :-/
Anyone having trouble installing the update? Mines had to restart several times and it's currently crawling towards 100% (it seems to be stuck on 97%). I put in a new internal hard drive last year if that's making a difference but I've had no problem with it till now
Am I the only one who REALLY hates the change to the notifications list? It's so disorganised now, and no option to delete anything. Party invites, message notifications, downloads, uploads, everything in one long disgustingly messy list. I'm genuinely mad that Sony thought LESS organisation would be a good change, especially after how long we asked to get folders to organise our games.
@FullbringIchigo Even with all the boxes ticked for automatic updates, my PS4 never does that. Blooming annoying it is.
@stevejcrow that's strange, it should as long as you have it set to download while in sleep mode
@Hego I had the exact same problem, and I have not changed my internal drive. The update would not complete and kept restarting. I thought my system was corrupted, but I just kept trying and eventually the update completed.
@Ben_Rage_V2 I'll keep trying so, hopefully it'll work itself out
