Snake Pass is kick-starting a retro platformer renaissance this week, but Yooka-Laylee is right around the corner. We've been playing the Banjo-Kazooie throwback for a good few weeks now, and we figured it was worth pulling together a bit of gameplay footage (under strict pre-release guidance from publisher Team 17, of course) as well as our early impressions. Watch on to see what we think so far.

Can't watch til after work - but I am really excited about this one!
Looks good
Thank you so much for this video. I really hope you don't end up regretting putting it up lol. I backed this so I'll be feverishly playing it regardless but consider the lines thoroughly read between for this video. Sounds like they were accurate to a fault when recreating the N64 era design philosophy and that's going to limit it's accessibility a lot for anyone that isn't picking this up out of sheer nostalgia for classics like Banjo-Kazooie simply because these design choices and formula have been improved upon since the 90s. Luckily for me, Banjo-Kazooie is still one of my favorite games and I can't wait!
I preordered it cause I've liked everything I've seen so far. @get2sammyb really been looking forward to the review ever since I saw you online playing it.
I'm all over this!
I'll be picking it up looking forwards to it, i love platformers. I hope it does well but sadly i'm doubtful after what gone on and people now boycotting it, tust this to happen.
I bought an X1 yesterday bundled w/ Rare Replay b/c I never played any of those games, not a 1 out of the 30, so I guess I'll play this when Playtonic does a compilation 30th anniversary set.
That does look good. I hope there's an interesting enough story and for a variety of levels including a snow level.
I'm not impressed with the performance of the PS4 version, to be honest (based on my time with the PS4 version's toybox). I'm torn between the presumably 30 fps Nintendo Switch version that will be fully portable and the PC version that runs at 60 fps.
I backed this on kickstarter and recently upgraded to a physical version so I can't wait for this. This is the era of games I have the fondest memories for, with 3D platformers amongst my favourite games ever
@Ralizah toybox is a very early build of the game so it doesn't really represent how the game will run on any platform
Waiting for reviews and the switch release.
@carlos82 PC footage of the toybox appears to show it running at a consistent 60 fps, versus the clunkier framerate the console versions appear to be targeting.
I can't wait for the game, and it's at a pretty reasonable price.
@Ralizah that's because you can easily brute force it on a PC, toybox was originally for PC backers only and I doubt they would have wasted resources on heavily optimising a demo for consoles. The final game will no doubt run at a higher framerate on PC but the console versions will have little in common with the performance of toybox
They should make a game where all the old school 3D platform characters have to team up. Crash, Spyro, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet, these two could join in as well. And they could fight against.. Croc? Or that Gecko character.
@rjejr
Banjo Kazooie and Tooie are two of my favourite games of all time! If you like platformers then you're going to have a great time . Conkers bad fur day is hilarious too, crazy good graphics too considering it was an n64 game.
@LieutenantFatman
Gex? Aha don't forget Sonic
@Ralizah
Yeah the demo ran fine on my pc with very little lag or frame rate drop which isn't particularly high spec. I haven't seen the ps4 demo yet so I will have to wait and see.
@LieutenantFatman Croc! I used to love that game. Once Vicarious Visions is done remaking Crash, they should definitely remake Croc (and redo the awful controls)!
I still need to beat gex 2 and 3, maybe some day I'll check this one out.
@starman292 "Conkers bad fur day is hilarious too, crazy good graphics too considering it was an n64 game."
Played 10 minutes today. I've always hated the angular N64 graphics but what always impresses and surprises me were these were games in 1999 on a Nintneod console that were fully voice acted. Well maybe not fully, but considering even into 2017 some people get upset about voice acting in a Zelda game there was decent voice acting in video games nearly 2 decades ago. Actually voices speaking english, not any of that humma humma nomma nomma stuff Nitneod likes to do in some of it's games. I hate that more than the angular N64 graphics.
I'm looking forward to the 2 Banjo's after Conker, I've read enough about Nuts and Bolts to probably skip it. And Kameo. But I also played 10 minutes of Ori today, man that game was nice looking on my 19" 1440x900 screen testing out the Win10 streaming, can't wait to see it on my 52" tv. Only problem w/ Rare Replay is wanting to play so many games NOW.
@LieutenantFatman
@carlos82 We'll see. It'd be nice to see it perform adequately (I don't know if it's the frame pacing or what, but the toybox gameplay is stuttery on PS4).
Looks fun, I probably won't get it day one though. I'll get it eventually.
I've been so excited for so long, but when they dumped JonTron, it's making me re-evaluate how much I need this.
Just because someone has a different opinion then you, it doesn't mean you should demonize them. We should be able to all be adult enough to accept we are all different, and our opinions won't always align with one another.
I'm so in love with this game ever since it was announced! 3D platformers are so much fun, we don't have enough of it these days. Also, the art style - I really enjoy animated cartoony art like this, too bad most developers simply try to mimic reality in every single game instead of trying different possibilities... I'm probably buying this either next month or in May. =)
@get2sammyb Oh yes, forgot about that one!
@Azikira so why can't you just accept that Playtonic has a different opinion to you regarding the situation and just enjoy a game that you were looking forward to playing?
So the frame rate's suspect, the camera a struggle, and the boss fights uninspired... but I still totally want this game.
@Azikira
Why is it OK for him, then? He denigrated entire cultures, ethnic groups...
If you're a white nationalist, too, either admit it or hush yourself.
If not, look at this double standard and fix it.
@JoeBlogs I only skimmed the video to limit spoilers for myself, but if it follows the Banjo-Kazooie design model, then enemies for the most part exist to populate the world and keep you alert and engaged in performing actions as you traverse it, not so much to deliver the main challenge of the game. The core of the game will be platforming, exploration, and tool usage, not combat.
That's not to say the enemies shouldn't ramp up in aggression or provide setpiece encounters as the game goes on - to use the original BK as an example, those snowmen in the mid-late-game ice world can go to hell and melt - but I'd propose that as a rule of thumb, if you're moving forward and encounter an enemy, most of the time you'll be able to either kill or avoid without slowing your forward momentum if you handle the encounter correctly.
You've got places to go, and it feels good to be able to get there without getting slowed by anklebiters.
@JoeBlogs No.
@TheGZeus @Shuebacca I didn't say I agreed with him, and some things he brought up were based on studies, but it just makes me sad. A single purchase isn't going to effect Playtonics very much, and of course they have the freedom to do what they want as well. It can make me sad that he was removed. It's just as simple as that.
@Azikira those studies were crap. Nonsense. Bad interpretation of bad statistics.
The Nazis based their ideology on 'studies'.
You're sad you won't hear his voice as some of the gibberish? It's not like he was getting paid...
@TheGZeus Dude, not trying to start a war here or anything. I'm saying what he said was based on things he read. You know you can't take everything you read as fact, ESPECIALLY on the Internet. Plus, we all make mistakes and I'm sure we all have opinions that other people think are bad as well. Heck, my opinion seems to be bad to you, but it doesn't make me a bad person.
And yeah, JonTron's voice cut into jibberish would be kind of hilarious. I'm sad that I won't experience that.
@Azikira that's fair enough, it's your decision. From an outside point of view though it seems the only person losing anything is you. It's only a video game, it's there to be enjoyed.
@Azikira he read racist things and believed them. That.makes him a racist. He then spent months spewing it at the internet. That makes him a famous, vocal racist. Don't make excuses for that.
"We all make mistakes"? Well, yeah. We don't all argue against mixing races or compare immigration to the invasion of tibet. If he ever retracts his statements (his non-apology amounts to "I was really tired and I'm bad at debate". He didn't take anything back) I might consider forgiving him.
I have to doubt your actual views on these things if you can stand him at this point.
@TheGZeus I don't know what studies you guys mean because I didn't watch the whole debate, but being wrong about a study doesn't make you a racist, it just means you are ill informed about an issue. If he genuinely hates people because of their race then yes he's racist, but saying something that is incorrect doesn't make you a bad person. I'm wrong about certain facts, I'm sure you're wrong about certain facts and it alters our opinions, but we're not bad people because of it.
@ThroughTheIris56 "I don't know what studies you guys mean because I didn't watch the whole debate..." then don't chime in about it.
Reductio ad absurdum:
If you see a study that says "ethnic cleansing of insert group improves the economy and quality of life", believe that, and then tell people that's true you're a vocal racist.
Believing racist things is the definition of "being racist". That's amazingly obvious.
Im so 50-50 with this game, I absolutely adored Ratchet & Clank last year, but theres something about this, that just doesn't quite hit the spot but then again, I can totally see me buying it at some point, but then Sonic will be out and then this video preview hasn't exactly filled me with confidence.
What a rollercoaster!
Can we stay focused on the game and not the Jontron thing. There's a separate thread for that.
@rjejr
Yeah XD I never played Ori because I haven't got an xb1. But I've played most rare games between N64 and 360. Kameo wasn't bad but it never properly sucked me in like the old games. I loved the multiplayer on perfect dark zero tbh, there were lots of things wrong with the game but it had it's fun parts.
@TheGZeus Goodness me, sorry for daring to join in a conversation to find out more about the topic and giving an you opportunity to put your opinion across. Besides it's not like I have no idea at all what the issue is about.
I'm going to watch the full video tonight to get the context behind everything. I literally have not heard one person mention the study that you cited. I have tried googling, looking at articles against the side of JonTron and I could not find anything that matches that. An actual quote or timestamp would be useful.
Studies are important no matter how uncomfortable the result should make us feel. Obviously I do NOT support ethnic cleansing but it is important to look at studies objectively. And if that is what studies do suggest (I bet they don't) it is important to look into to find out the truth to enable to best grounds for making policy on (very unlikely if the results suggested that, it would even be true implication). On the otherhand, as you said studies can be misleading and flawed. Skepticism and analysis of methodology is important. However looking at data is important. Important to note that even if he believed in the study it doesn't necessarily mean he believes ethnic cleansing is a moral thing to do. Maybe it could be mean he thinks its good evidence that having more than one ethnic group in an area isn't great and is an argument against mass immigration. Research can often lead in somewhat the right direction, but the truth can often be different to what the results immediately suggests. Maybe he didn't look into the methodology of the study and just saw the results? Nobody looks into the methodology for every study they see. Maybe I'm being too kind to JonTron, but I struggle to believe he thinks ethnic cleansing is a good idea in reality. I can't really say anything because you've only provided a vague summarisation and not a quote or study, and therefore aren't convincing even if you are right.
I'll watch the whole thing tonight and if he really is an awful racist than I'll criticise him for it after. However since most of the criticism that I've seen has been about far more reasonable statements that Jon made and I haven't seen the study mentioned by anyone else, I'm not convinced that will be the case.
@ThroughTheIris56 "I don't know the facts, but..." should always be replaced with "I'm going to look into this" or simply doing that and saying nothing.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_absurdum
The "studies" aren't that severe, but badly collected or falsified data is worthy of nothing more than disregard regardless of conclusion.
He said racist things. He's made it clear that he believes them. That makes him a racist.
@TheGZeus I have said I will look into it and tell you if I change my mind. I don't know why you posted that link, you didn't explain why or how it's relevant. What studies? I've googled and I couldn't find them. You didn't even post quotes to show how Jon used these studies like I asked. I don't even know what the studies involve. What racist things specifically?
"He said racist things. He's made it clear that he believes them. That makes him a racist." Umm kind of but it's not so black and white. People say all sorts of things, sometimes out of ignorance or stupidity. If something is somewhat unclear or goes against the regressive narrative it can be misconstrued as racism. That has been happening a lot recently. For example, people who don't like BLM can be seen as racist because one would think "this person hates black people because they oppose a movement to make their lives better", when in reality people can oppose it because they disagree with it's narrative or they dislike it's methods (I'm not opening a debate about BLM, I'm using it as an example). In today's climate lots of stuff is seen as racist. An example, people standing against Islam is often called racist. In fact this is what JonTron was talking about. He often referred to certain immigrants being a potential problem because of their CULTURE, not their skin colour. Yet it's a common misconception that anyone who questions immigration = racist. Generalizations about races such as "black people commit more murders", "Indians are more likely to be doctors" can be seen as stereotyping and therefore racist, when often trends can be backed up with statistics and therefore are facts. What's seen as racist can be subjective, especially since a lot of the time racism has an ambiguous meaning. Such simple thinking does the disservice of suggesting all racists and are equally extreme. Some racists may have very mild views and can probably be persuaded otherwise easily, others literally HATE someone because of their race and will harder to cure. Throwing "racist" around carelessly makes it harder to identify who actually deserves the label, and we're getting to a point where people couldn't care less if the called it due to how meaningless it's becoming.
@TheGZeus Right I finally watched the debate so here are my thoughts on it:
First off I didn't see that Jon reciting that study, maybe I missed it? Again can you link a time and the study in question. Overall I actually thought Destiny did better. They both made a lot of errors (I cba to cite them), but Destiny was better composed and more coherent than Jon, who could be quite rude and dodge questions.
However, I really did not see Jon as a particularly bad guy. I agree he said a number of things that can be seen in a racist way, but generally his concerns were about economic and cultural affects, not necessarily race. And he is right that people from different areas with bring different cultures, some good and some bad. But I certainly think cutting him out of the game is an overreaction.
I'm personally gonna leave it there before I get banned, though if you wanna finish please do.
@get2sammyb "Can we stay focused on the game and not the Jontron thing."
For the record I'm almost on topic this thread. And I'll give you a shilling if you delete that Heroes on the Move pic, makes me cry and gag.
So, you going to do a comparison vid for YK and SP? I know they aren't the same, but your'e playing them both at the same time, and they do kind of sort of look the same.
@ThroughTheIris56 tl;dr
Seriously. I stopped when you said you couldn't find anything. How does one fail at an internet search? What's this wall of text???
I need to explain the relevance? O.o I stated that that's what I was doing, then did it. You took it completely differently, so I pointed you to the definition.
Check his Twitter history, too. He's agreed that immigrants having children is bad for the USA. He's stated that sexism doesn't exist. He doesn't think the hijab should be allowed (a scarf???).
He's a far-right nutter who thinks that since Iranians are "indo-European" that means he's white, and that somehow matters.
