Whether or not PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale was a good game is up for debate, but should there ever be a successor, it would be fascinating to see what direction Sony took. There's been a bizarre amount of chatter about the series online of late, with a sequel supposedly leaking on 4Chan (hint: it was fake) and now artwork arriving on NeoGAF (hint: it's also fake).
This is the supposed leaked poster:
You should know by now that anything pictured using an early noughties smartphone camera is almost certainly not real, but the weird artwork β that Aloy is stolen from Deviant Art, right? β confirms things. Also, PlayStation All-Stars Stadium? Really?
Honestly, this author has been thinking a lot about what a sequel could look like, and first and foremost it would have to have the right roster. There's no point in even green lighting the project if Crash Bandicoot, Cloud Strife, and Lara Croft are off the table.
But if, through some legal masterstroke, the platform holder could get access to the right characters, we reckon that it should ditch the Smash Bros copy-and-paste and get someone like Arc System Works involved; make a proper brawler like Persona 4 Arena Ultimax rather than some mainstream multiplayer party thing. It's not like Cole MacGrath has any cachet with casual gamers, after all.
Anyway, it'll never happen, so there you go. Rememberthat when you see the above poster inevitably pop up on poop websites, we've already debunked it. (But you could have done that yourself, right?)

Honestly I am not big on fighters like this or Smash Bros. I prefer more traditional fighters like Mortal Kombat, Tekken etc.
I would love another one if it was...umm...good? The mashup stages were cool in theory but were moreso annoying. The win conditions in it just weren't very rewarding. I think it would need to be closer to smash bros in all honesty.
Yes please!!
Shame, i absolutely loved PSASBR and REALLY want a sequel.
@ztpayne7 Nah. I really think they should do a proper, crazy 2D fighting game. In hindsight, I really don't understand why they went for a more casual approach when the characters are freakin' Radec and Cole MacGrath.
Smash makes sense because everyone knows Mario and Luigi, but Sony doesn't have any characters like that. At all.
I genuinely believe Arc System Works would be a great fit β IF they could get the cast. (Which they clearly can't.)
I really liked all stars, and still play it regularly with friends. I disagree with the "copy paste smash" attitude, all stars' fighting system required pretty different strategies to a game of smash (you don't get damage, you really need to land your supers etc). Love them both to bits, but the notion that it was just a ripoff needs to go away. I'd like to see a sequel that builds and expands on that gameplay than something completely new. And some better balancing would be nice (looking at you Kratos).
@get2sammyb They went for a more casual approach hoping to get some of the Smash fans to come over to Sony.
@get2sammyb let's agree to disagree and just hope for PS4 FF Dissadia. Someday.
I got excited there for a second now I'm sad
@ztpayne7 Agreed, I really hated the idea of mashing up stages. They all looked atrocious as a result, when they could have looked amazing. Not to mention they can really ruin atmospheres.
@Tasuki But surely Sony aren't stupid enough to think that Sly Cooper is as recognisable as Mario?
@ThroughTheIris56 I thought the mash-up stages was the best piece of fanservice in a game that lacked the kind of fanservice a game like that should have.
@get2sammyb Ah. I think it would feel like more love went into it if each stage was more crafted around one franchise. The way they did it felt disloyal and sloppy to me.
A sequel would be really interesting. I genuinely enjoyed All-Stars, despite some pretty awful design decisions. Riding on the coattails of Smash Bros. clearly didn't work the first time, so perhaps a 3D brawler would work better, as Sammy said. That feels a bit more PlayStation, actually.
@get2sammyb To be honest will any video game character ever be as widely recognized as Mario. That's like saying will any other cartoon character be as widely recognized as Mickey Mouse.
Yeah we have enough 1v1 fighters already. A 4-player brawler is the way to go. "It's not like Cole MacGrath has any cachet with casual gamers, after all." Yeah you can say that with like a bunch of the characters in Smash as well. Not sure casual gamers care about Olimar and Fire Emblem.
That image is obviously fake. Though I'd love to see a sequel one day, but they might as well just copy Smash all the way.
@get2sammyb Your suggestion of Arc System Works is sound. I think right now Sony are in a position where they can get the third party characters that make sense for the brand but they can fill out a roster of new characters as well. Characters like Aloy, Joel and Ellie, Knack (no sniggering) Delsin or Fetch from Infamous, Spiderman possibly and maybe William from Nioh.
@Tasuki 100% Agree with you!
PlayStation has mostly serious character, how cool it's gonna be if it's a serious fighter
like "Mortal Kombat" or "Marvel vs Capcom".
Shame that they decided to make a Brawler...
A 2d fighting game with PlayStation characters could work. I didn't really like All Star Battle Royal much.
@whywai88 I wouldn't necessary call it a brawler, that's more like games like Final Fight, Streets of Rage or Double Dragon, but I get what you're saying. Heck I wish Smash was more like Mortal Kombat or even like a 3D Fighter like Tekken.
I absolutely loved the first one. All-Stars 2.......make it happen please
Sony really needs to stop doing this thing where they try to create a Playstation equivalent of something that works for Nintendo. It just never works out. The Playstation brand is wonderful and synonymous with success, but its strengths are different than Nintendo's strengths.
Something like Smash only works out so well because Nintendo has access to a totally unparalleled stable of instantly recognizable characters and mascots. Sony... doesn't.
The way I see it, Nintendo is sort of like classic Disney, which re-purposed the same set of characters across various animations and turned them into household names. Sony is more like modern Disney, where unique characters are constantly introduced and (mostly) confined by the limits of their stories.
Lol anyone notice the acronym would be P.A.S.S. Haha PASBR was alright but if they make another PS all stars I think I'll pass on it
I hope we will get a sequel one day and if it is a 2D fighter, then for me atl east it will be better. Also I think I would prefer it if they use characters from exclusive games only.
Pretty sure the first game didn't make them any money so I would be surprised to see a sequel unless it really switches things up considerably.
@Ralizah I completely agree except I always saw sony like 90s cartoon network. They got some memorable characters but not as memorable as disney/Nintendo if that makes sense. By the way I apologize if it looks like I'm trying to repeat what you said.
Thay should just make a proper fighting game but with PlayStation characters, get someone like Capcom to make it but obviously with a full arcade campaign plus other off line and online modes. And i'm not talking about a casual fighter, plus every character obviously has a there own unique move set.
@Ralizah Absolutely right - Sony has its own strengths but All Stars is an obvious clone of a successful competitors franchise with characters that just don't fit in the same way.
That Ratchet is obviously just his model from last year's game copy-pasted into the picture.
No thank you, I'll stick with Smash. Honestly, I love some of the big Sony character in their own games, but for some reason I can't get on board with them mixed into a Smash clone.
@get2sammyb "noughties"
Thanks for that. Had to Google it, thought you made it up as a combination of ninties and aughts. it's the Aughties or Oughties over here.

My heads a bit scrambled this morning after waking up to the New 2DS Slim, which I still can't believe is a real thing. I just stopped by over here to clear my head.
On topic, PSASBR was a total flop, they were practically giving it away soon after launch. They'll release The Last Guardian 2 before we get PASS. It won't even fly as a VR game as nobody needs a 2D fighter in VR.
If Sony wants to look into another all-star mash-up they'd be better off copying Subspace Emissary from SSBB. A story driven platform fighter is more in line w/ their characters. Though they shouldn't make it a horrible horrible horribly bad mess like Heroes on the Move, a platformer lacking a jump button. What a mess that was.
I would like a sequel tbh.
I like Battle Royale, even though it had a ton of flaws.
I wouldn't really mind but im sure it won't happen
I'm a big fan of Super Smash Bros, but I just couldn't get on with PS All-Stars. A PlayStation fighting game could potentially work well, but I'm not convinced that a straight sequel to All-Stars would be any good.
