We know there’s a bit of confusion over what Dreams actually is, but you’ve got to give both Sony and Media Molecule credit for being bold enough to create something so outside-the-box. The artsy outing – which will provide you with the canvas to create your own magical masterpieces – has been kept undercover for a little while now, but the Guildford-based developer has uploaded some images of the kind of creations you can make.
And this is impressive stuff. Take, for example, this snail, which is based upon a photograph by Kahlief Adams. Astonishing, really.
The studio also recently posted this GIF for Earth Day, again created entirely using Dreams’ artistic toolset.
How it’s going to perform commercially remains to be seen, but this game is going to win a lot of awards, you can be certain of that. Hopefully we learn more about Sony’s launch plans at E3 2017 next month.

You mean outside the box?
I've a feeling most physical copies are going to remain inside the box, as it's going to fail. Hard.
@finalstan I guess so. Edited.
@THRILLHOU I understand the concept doesn't appeal to all audiences, but it's such a shame to see the gaming community once again feverish in anticipation for something different to fail.
It's the exact same crowd that wants virtual reality to flop, too.
Don't worry, all of your bog-standard games will continue to exist.
I want this day one ! I hope the beta still coming. I just want something really random to fool around on that's different.
Anything I create will be horrific most likely though ! 😂
It's had my interest since it was revealed ages ago. They could do with showing some gameplay though for the less creative consumers out there. I'm confident it will be something special, I just hope it's given a chance to succeed.
@LieutenantFatman When the beta drops and there are YouTube videos of ridiculous things people have made in it, I'm confident it'll pick up steam.
We also know they're working on a single player campaign for it. I'm sure it'll have a big E3.
The problem I have with this is that 99% of LBP user content isn't very good. Even with time, planning and taking it seriously most users (myself included) don't have the skill or talent to create something that looks or plays good.
Fair play to Sony for backing this. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised, but my expectations are set to impressive technically, but otherwise lacking.
@get2sammyb exactly, poor sales or not we should be commending Sony to the high heavens for championing such unique and artistic titles like this, TLG, LBP, Puppeteer etc.
Otherwise what's the alternative, become like Microsoft and continue to rehash the same 3 mindless franchises year after year?
Sorry but just because most of the industry is willing to give up on creativity it shouldn't mean sony shouldn't try and push the industry to new avenues, there might not be much of a game in Dreams but I'm damn well excited to see WHAT it is!
Also how about the media stop talking about dreams failing and trying to describe it and they actually use their vast influence to actually push these titles, show Dreams for what it is and why people could enjoy it and more people will come on board to the idea.
@THRILLHOU how constructive. 🙄
@get2sammyb if I'm completely honest, I am happy they're still making games like this. I just thought it was too easy a joke to make. I'd honestly like for DREAMS to prove me wrong, sadly I don't think it will.
@get2sammyb Can you really call something like this a "game" at this point though? I'd call it more of a software application if all you can do is create things with a blank canvas. If they try to market this as a game and there's no gameplay to speak of.....that's a problem.
@get2sammyb "When the beta drops"
Is that really going to ever happen? I've been waiting on this since the PS4 unveil, the early one when they didn't even show the PS4, and while I haven't given up, I have been thinking Sony needs a new The Last Guardian to take forever and skip a gen. And barring that, I do worry about it being PSVR only, b/c as much as I like the PSVR experience, I don't like gaming in first person. I'll need a new PS4 camera but I do have 2 Move. Hope they don't make a new Move for just this one game.
Who knows, maybe it will be the next No Man's Sky and be shown at every event and presentation for the next 3 years.
Definitely getting this day one MM are some of the best devs out there, also the creation tools in Dreams blow LBP out of the water from what MM have said.
it'll probably be a critical smash, but whether it'll be a commercial one will depend on whether they can tap into that same community spirit that made LBP1&2 very successful. the concern would be that interest in subsequent LBP games on vita and LBP3 on PS4 have waned dramatically, and for all its cleverness, tearaway didn't trouble too many sales charts either. :-/ i'll probably still buy dreams though.. there's no denying that there was some fantastically creative things made by users in LBP2, but i think MM will need to do more to filter users creations in dreams so that the best of the best are easily discovered.
I still don't know what it is...
@THRILLHOU I doubt it will fail almost as hard as No Man's Sky. Atleast in Dreams you can create almost anything you can think off, and it certainly looks way more advance than LBP, Project Spark (people do remember thsi game right?) and Super Mario Maker combined.
@THRILLHOU That's fair, I'll let you off!
@RedMageLanakyn I think so, yes. There's going to be a full single player campaign, and creators will be able to create gameplay systems and mechanics with the tools provided.
@rjejr I don't see why it won't happen. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we got an update on the beta either at E3 or in the near future.
@Muttt The thing is, LBP had — what? — 7 million creations I think. So even if only 1% of them are good, that's... Oh I'm terrible at maths. 70,000? 70,000 levels that are of a reasonable quality. Even if it's just 0.1% that are good, that's still 7,000 things worth looking at. So... I think the key is discoverability. They need to make it incredibly easy and straightforward to find the very best stuff.
I've watched quite a few of their archived streams on this game and it looks fascinating. There's a ton of footage surrounding the creation tools on their YouTube channel, and some of the stuff they can make is pretty crazy. I can't wait to see more of Dreams, especially the actual game side of it.
@SoulsBourne128 Like I Mentioned After My Initial Facetious Remark, I'd really like for this game to prove me wrong. It would mean there's a bigger market for titles that don't fit the AAA mould than we thought. Sadly, we've been proven right too often for me to have much confidence. Good call on No Mans Sky as well. That game was the biggest disappointment this decade far as I'm concerned.
(I'm also confused as to why my comments randomly capitalise words. It's my phone! I'm not a pleb!)
I hope it's still ok, it's been so long since we've heard anything big on it.
This game has me very intrigued.
I hope move controllers won't be required. I wonder if they will allow other users creations to be copied and used in your creation. That would save time say.. I need a tree or two. Copy. Paste. Done. Or have templates to pull from, only needed to create a few things to make your world. Might give it broader appeal.
Maybe Ps5 launch game?
This game looks really fun, which is what I like in games...fun. Especially the ones that will attract more than just 'adult' fans, and the PS4 needs some nice family-friendly games, and with people creating various scenes and uploading them (like Little Big Planet), this should be a nice experience, even if it doesn't take off too well...and I remember many people stating that Little Big Planet wouldn't take off. The game looks great, and it's nice to see this style, even though the sand box era has been done to death, but it's also nice to get some great simulation-style games too! My wife, kids and myself have been waiting for this for a long time!
Seriously when you step back and think you gotta appreciate the variety that Sony has cultivated and trying to improve on the platform, though they can try to be more carefully of some of the steam asset flippy titles, otherwise love the effort
Media Molecule likes to utilize the system's hardware in a nice, creative way (Take Tearaway on Vita for example). So for Dreams, with a more powerful console, and maybe and option to play it on PSVR, I can't imagine how it will feel, let alone if it will have a full single player story mode with gameplay. But I'm cautiously optimistic.
I cannot wait for this. So excited. Watched every video and read every article (I think). Just gets those creative juices flowing and the sky's the limit with what you can make. It's taking longer because they are now incorporating PSVR support and getting the story mode completed. Can't wait to put my PSVR headset on and walk through other people's 'Dreams'. Awesome.
@Elodin Dual Shock can also be used and any content from any creator can be copied (as long as they allow the content to be 'shared').
