The first batch of PREY reviews are in, and they’re overwhelmingly positive. Bethesda obviously maintained its policy of not sending out review code until launch day – actually, we got it 24 hours earlier, but still not quick enough to bring you our verdict just yet – but that hasn’t stopped a handful of sites from zipping through the sci-fi reboot and posting their opinion online. Maybe take some of these with a pinch of salt – who knows how long they played for – but here’s a round up all the same.
Press Start - 9/10
Prey is another win for Arkane. It’s a game where everyone who plays it will have a different experience. One thing is certain though – that Prey remains a consistent experience from beginning to end. Providing players with intuitive gameplay systems with great synergy, freedom to approach combat how you want and game design that rewards creativity are just three ways that Prey succeeds. While BioShock was heralded as the spiritual successor to System Shock, Prey feels like a much more successful attempt. An absolute joy to play and experience.
Gadgets 360 - 9/10
Clocking in at around 20 hours, Prey is well worth checking out even if you’re not a fan of horror or sci-fi. It might not be wholly original, but that doesn’t make it any less fun.
Attack of the Fanboy - 4.5/5
As far as first person action games go, Arkane Studios is probably the best in the business. Proving that the studio has no shortage of interesting ideas, Prey is the perfect blend of thrilling action and thought provoking story. Who needs a new BioShock or Half Life game when we’re getting experiences like these?
Will you be hunting down PREY this weekend? Have you already got started on the game? Are you surprised by these early review scores? Don't be a mug in the comments section below.

Can't say Prey was on my watch list. I am still disappointed that the original concept for Prey 2 was cancelled and I thought that had a lot more potential and a more interesting premise - had it fulfilled that of course.
Something about the video's just never gelled with me and can't say I have seen anything to change my mind - maybe reading the reviews will reveal something that I am missing...
The sense of deja vu is strong with this one. It's certainly stylish, not sold on it's substance.
Dialogue comes out of wrong speakers, which I've noticed in several other Bethesda games on ps4.
The idea of the aliens mimicking any object certainly adds to the nerves, apart from when they sprout from something you've already whacked.
Not entirely sold on how it controls either.
Certainly think some of these initial scores are a bit high.
Not familiar with the three sites linked above, so I would be wary of putting any real faith in their recommendation.
What's this Prey game? First time I heard of it. Got it confused with Prey sorry I meant 'Praey' for the gods .
After playing the demo it just strikes me as a BioShock/Dishonored/Half Life hodge-podge with no new ideas of its own.
If it had been released 10 years ago then maybe but now? It's just embarrassing
I don't know any of above site, I'll wait for pushsquare, gamespot and metacritic review.
WTF! The game looked like crap to me xD I'm honestly surprised
I'll wait until the game is really cheap. Didn't like the demo.
I liked the story, but that was about it. Everything else felt like it was done before in other games.
I will probably buy soon in time for my school summer holidays! I can't wait!
I'm passing on it until it hits the bargain bin. Arkane really let me down with the PC version of Dishonored 2, and their attitude towards Prey isn't much better. A shame, really, since I'd love to experience it in 2K. If they can't be bothered to properly support all platforms equally, i can't be bothered to give them full price for their games.
Just play Deus Ex Mankind Divided, its pretty much the exact same game minus the annoying mimics and sub-par controls, its also dirt cheap these days..
I will wait for PushSquare's review first as have no idea how they go reviews out so quickly. I love Bioshock and these games types but will probably wait until a month or two. Bethesda games often go down in price pretty quickly.
@Tenacious-P Hyperbole much? Is it embarrassing because it draws inspiration from other series while adding some new elements? By your assessment 99% of stuff out there is embarassing.
Even if it will not win GOTY awards, it's getting good early reviews and feedback from players. It's not like the market is flooded with those immersive sims games, so we should cherish each and every one. Seriously, I kinda get why this genre is niche, but it shouldn't be, I bet many players just think those games are some FPS shooters (marketing them as such doesn't help).
Wow Press Start? @get2sammyb you calling out the lawyers?
@Lurker This title goes above and beyond inspiration. Often more like a fan made tribute to their favourite past games with a AA budget.
@themcnoisy There was one recently called Press Circle or something. That one we did get a bit irked by.
I saw a IGN Plays video of a boring looking game some weeks back, and for some reason thought it was this game. Guess I'll keep an eye on it, then.
@stevejcrow And you're basing this on the full game, the demo or what? Of course you're entitled to your opinion and all that I'm just curious, since as I've mentioned before the early previews/reviews and player feedback seems overwhelmingly positive (there are criticisms of course, and judging from the demo some of them are probably valid) but I haven't seen anyone calling it a copy, "fan made tribute" or anything like that.
This is a bargain bin title for me. That demo did not make a good first impression on me, and combat something you probably do a lot in that game was absolutely abysmal. Granted that was just the first hour, but to pay sixty dollars for a game that starts off so incredibly boring is not worth it to me. Plus I never buy Bethesda games day one...
@Lurker He did say he played the demo. And you have to admit the demo probably didn't do the game any favors especially with the aim input lag and the annoying music cues when fighting mimics. It was only the first hour, but even still as far as demos are concerned it was very lackluster. And I mean, I would agree it felt very much like Bioshock except not nearly as good. They should have released a vertical slice demo of something more fun than the first hour. To each their own though.
@AFCC You probably shouldn't be man. This game was under review embargo and these outlets definitely rushed to form consesus about the game. I think the scores will more or less even out once other publications get their reviews out. However, I still expect that this game will get good scores. 8's and 9's, as these games are the kinds of games reviewers typically review fairly well.
prey has flushable toilets 10/10.
@Lurker Got my copy in the post Friday, played about 10 hours or so. Haven't made much progress past Yu're office, just been exploring.
I just feel it borrows very heavily from System & BioShock, doesn't really have much new about it, barring the mimics.
I'm enjoying it, but 7 is about as high as I'd go so far.
@Constable_What I'd agree with you on basically every point you've made, yet after playing the demo and getting over some annoyances I still see a LOT of potential in terms of exploration, atmosphere, story, music (which aside from the super annoying loud jump scare attack they got going on in the demo is pretty fantastic) and powers (which we barely see in the demo). As you've said it probably the demo probably wasn't the best way to showcase this type of game
@stevejcrow Fair enough, 10 hours is more than enough to formulate a opinion like that. Still, even after reading your latest comment I think calling it a fan made tribute was a bith harsh.
@Lurker The exploration and the atmosphere drew me into playing the demo, but the combat made me take two steps back; It didn't feel great at all. The first time I fought a mimic I thought it was hilarious with it jumping around everywhere and me just flailing away with a wrench, but it got old so fast. I also don't like that you can't zoom in and ADS with firearms. It really bugs the heck out of it and brings me out of the experience. That is a huge immersion breaker for me.
I definitely want to play through. I absolutely will not pay full price. xD
@sonicmeerkat
IGN: Too much water 1/10
@Lurker what is harsh about that? Maybe homage would have been a better choice of word.
It is strange that Bethesda can go to such lengths to protect its trademark of the Prey brand, when the game itself is not shy in borrowing from other titles.
found the demo incredibly dull and irritating, so will pass. the concept for the original prey 2 sequel was much more interesting imo. plus, i didn't really like bioshock all that much.. i thought bioshock infinite was better.
@Constable_What Early combat can definitely get annoying, but even in the demo you could experiment with the Gloo Gun, invest in an ability to slow time for a moment etc. Overall I'd say combat probably won't be the strongest part of the game (and I'm fine with it as it's not a traditional FPS, I wouldn't call it a "shooter" at all) , but I expect it to get better later on.
@stevejcrow By definition homage sounds a lot better in this context. "Fan made tribute" make the game sound amateurish or as some kind of a hack-job, at least to me (kinda like a lot of fanfiction).
@Constable_What fair point...it just seems an "ok" game to me
@AFCC I agree. I still want it eventually; I'm hoping when I get it that it only starts off pretty bad and gets good later.
Seems like people want this game to be bad, clearly though it isn't. C'mon, be happy - "year of dreams" n all that remember?
I thought the demo had some very cool ideas. I didn't get it at launch because I want to make sure the small technical issues are ironed out.
@AFCC Depends on what type of games you're into. If you're a person who enjoys sci-fi, spooky atmosphere, exploration, great level design, a lot of freedom in your games, creative powers at your disposal, intriguing story, great music or any combination of the aforementioned elements I'd say the game is still shaping up pretty great
I played the demo a second time and found the combat better as i had learned from my first play. I also milked my second play for as much as possible using codes to open doors and exploring.
So i have interest but it all felt sort of bland. I will probably wait for a $30 price.
One thing really annoyed me and that is the lack of reflections in the bathroom mirrors. Also annoying was the fat character that looked horrible. Like he escaped from a PS2 game.
@Tenacious-P how is it embarrassing when nobody else besides Arkane make these games anymore. There's a reason their games review really well and are loved by gamers
@stevejcrow dude what games nowadays don't borrow from other games please show me
@BAMozzy yea... it's more Bioshock than original Prey..
Didn't enjoy the demo. Bioshock did it better and the combat seems awful.
@whywai88 The original Prey wasn't great - it was OK though. It had some unique mechanics to it that separated it from other games at the time. I was MUCH more excited by the sequel which was set in the same universe. The intergalactic bounty hunter concept looked far more interesting than this. I certainly can't see myself getting this - not unless its in a bargain bin somewhere or given away free with IGC/GwG. Too many other games and hardware coming up to save my money for...
@dark_knightmare2 There's a point though where it goes past borrowing and is closer to being derivative of other titles.
@Lurker Actually yes, I do like those kinds of games! But I think the games industry is quite happy with me since I like a pretty huge range of games
