Looks like Sony’s enormous marketing spend paid off, as PlayStation VR first-person shooter Farpoint has entered the UK sales charts in second position this week – an impressive achievement considering the increased cost of the PlayStation VR Aim Controller bundle and the slim install base of the headset itself. It bodes well for the future of virtual reality, really.
That said, obviously Impulse Gear’s debut could not topple DC Comics dust-up Injustice 2, which topped the charts and sold over two thirds of its retail copies on the PlayStation 4. It’s the first fighting game to top the UK sales charts since Mortal Kombat X over two years ago; it’ll be interesting to see if Tekken 7 can repeat that feat in a few weeks, won’t it?
Elsewhere, last week’s number one PREY is down to fourth place, while The Surge debuted in tenth position – perhaps a bit disappointing for the Souls-esque sci-fi title. Horizon: Zero Dawn continues to hover in 14th place, a spot ahead of Resident Evil 7 which is still stretching its legs in 15th position. The full top ten is below.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 20th May, 2017
- Injustice 2
- Farpoint
- Grand Theft Auto V
- PREY
- Fire Emblems Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- FIFA 17
- Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands
- Rocket League
- The Surge

Good on Farpoint - I found stock hard to find on the day after launch, managed to reserve one at a retail gaming shop that only had 2 delivered on release. Amazon was out of stock for a day or so but seems to be getting more in. It will drop once the PSVR faithful have bought theirs but I think it will sell well with bundles. Impulse Gear have done a good job.
I noticed that Prey has already dropped in price at some UK retailers. to about £35, or had yesterday when I last looked. Third party games drop in price so quickly in most instances - it is just silly to pre-order (unless a niche title where stock will be limited, like P5).
Injustice 2 is pretty awesome and I'm not even really much of a fighting game fan.
@Splat Yeah, it's really good.
How does GTAV do it?! Doesn't everyone have at least 2 copies by now!
@Rudy_Manchego £29.99 in Game currently.
@Shellcore So a £10-15 drop in what, a couple of weeks? Wowzer.
Great show for Farpoint, I hope other developers take note! An exclusive, catering to 1/60th of the instal base charts 2nd.
Prey will be £15 by Xmas. I'll snap it up then.
Great news just hope they bring out some other missions and more coop levels in the near future.
Huge boost for VR. So glad I pulled the trigger on getting one. Farpoint is amazing and also shows the potential for VR gaming. Exciting times my friends.
Nice stuff but I can't help but feel it's only done so well because game sale's are soooo low in England. Still it's nice to see though, I reckon i'll defo get a PSVR in the middle of next year maybe, maybe they will bring out a PSVR slim ^^. It will be more interesting to see how it does in USA if it come's in second i'll be very impressed.
@hi_drnick Apparently there's a direct correlation between console purchases and GTA5 sales. Basically, a huge majority of people that buy a PS4/Xbone for the first time get GTA5 with it.
@Rudy_Manchego would you say that game is any good? Immersion, Story, Graphics, VR Experience ect.?
"Injustice 2, which topped the charts and sold over two thirds of its retail copies on the PlayStation 4" this got me giggling and I don't know why?
)
Hope more VR games succeed commercially. I really like that new borders have been opened in the gaming world.
@xMEADx I agree. It seems relatively easy to get in the top 10. Surprised The Surge didn't do better just due to it being a new game.
@JAMes-BroWWWn I haven't finished the story yet but I would rank it up there as one of the top VR experiences on the PSVR I've had. In terms of gameplay, it is a very basic shooter - it is the gun and the experience of shooting that elevates it. Immersion is good standing up (how I played it), a few times I actually took steps back when enemies charged me and changing weapon over the shoulder hasn't got old yet. So my quick review is that is isn't the best game ever made but it some of the most fun I've had in VR yet. Hope that waffle helped!
@Shellcore Yeah I quite fancied The Surge but it's obviously going to drop in price in a few week's so I didn't bother, I think that's probabaly the problem tbh.
@Rudy_Manchego @JAMes-BroWWWn I've had a lot of fun with Farpoint, I set it to full turn speed on smooth and it gets pretty hectic when you jump in the middle of the action. I still hate those little spiders that jump at your face but yeah it's the most fun I've had in VR. As others have said it's a little basic but these developers are still learning what they and us can handle in VR and the controller is great and bodes well for the future.
Hopefully strong sales like this may encourage bigger developers to stick their toes in
@carlos82 I'd agree, to me this is almost the first proof of concept that an FPS can be made to work smoothly in VR, particularly PSVR. I think things can only get better and the Aim controller can deliver that.
