Bethesda Game Studios - the outfit behind the modern Fallout games and The Elder Scrolls series - is currently working on a "AAA" free-to-play title, according to a recently posted job listing. We also know that the company is crafting a mobile game, but this seems to be for a different project entirely. Obviously, this raises the key question: what the heck could it be?
Well, we're more than likely going to find out at E3 later this week. For the third year in a row, Bethesda will be hosting its own press conference at the Los Angeles event, so feel free to go ahead and hop aboard the hype train.
How do you feel about Bethesda making a free-to-play title? Try not to expect the worst in the comments section below.

AAA Free-to-Play
That's an oxymoron.
Nothing inherently wrong with the F2P model, when done right I understand it can be great - take Path of Excile.
Still, it's brave of them to try this, especially if they are investing AAA dollar.
@Grawlog Its called sarcasm.
The idea of F2P in the industry is cheap and high profit. AAA is a term with no fixed value that implies high end graphics and investment of hundreds of millions.
I'll keep wishing for a single player Elder Scrolls game set in Elsweyr.
Gamers: Please, hear us out, Bethesda!! We want Elder Scrolls 6!!
Bethesda: Okay, we get you loud and clear. Just want to make an AAA F2P game that nobody asked for, first.
Gamers: ...
I'd also guess that they want in on some of that sweet sweet MOBA money.
Free to play? Then this has no hope of actually running smoothly on Playstation.
Personally I hate to hear that a game is using the Free to Play model. In the majority of F2P games, they make the 'grind' so tedious that you almost have to relent to 'buy' 'progress' - either gear, weapons, XP or some other aspect. Yes you could get 'some' items eventually if you grind and grind but others get these by paying. F2P is often a stripped down experience - whether its limiting to one or two classes, a few 'custom' class set-ups, limited gear/weapons (I know that some weapons/gear may be 'statisically' the same but its still limited), XP earn rates are lower.
Often the quality, the depth, the polish etc is not to the standards you expect (not saying this will be) but because 'its free', people are happy to spend £5 here and £5 there and up spending more for less. Its a con!
People would go mad if Battlefield/CoD etc gave you no campaign, access to a fraction of the content, limited the classes and/or custom classes you can create, limited your XP earn rate etc and sold the rest of the game as micro transactions, 2hrs of normal XP or an extra custom class for £5 for example - especially if the game itself wasn't as 'polished' as their other releases.
Oh god another F2P, never again after Neverwinter, I put so much time into that game and there simply is no way to compete unless your willing to spend plenty of cash on it. And seeing all the people that suck at the game defeat people that are really good due simply to how much money they've spent sux big time and is very disheartening, never again.
It should be called, free to try - expensive to compete.
Hate the f2p model.
@themcnoisy F2PETC I like it.
One word comes to mind: gross.
@ApostateMage I hope we get to see it, eventually.
@BAMozzy @themcnoisy @xMEADx Path of Excile (as I mentioned above) is the only example of f2p that I can think of that is genuinely completely free to play, but it's very much respected by players as a brilliant spiritual successor to Diablo 2. The only micro transactions are for faster upgrades (which arnt necessary as the game is well balanced and not excessively grindy) and things like cosmetics.
I agree the letters f2p are not sexy but there are good games out there and it's cool that developers are trying something new. I think Hearthstone is another one, doesn't really appeal to me personally but people love that no?
F2P is a poison.
Lol, Bethesda's pay to play games are buggy and unfinished enough; god alone knows what f2p will be like.
@kyleforrester87 There are good ways to use it, however a lot of the f2p games these days have sacrificed fun in favor of micro transactions. A great example of why I hate f2p is what happened to new star soccer. It was Brilliant in its early versions, but now it's a complete joke.
With Hearthstone you generally have to pay to have the best cards, that's pay to win in my book. The example you gave is fair and fair play to them. But it's so easy manipulated with nerfed leveling like most f2p games out there.
@themcnoisy Yeah it's just about what you get out of it I suppose, my girlfriends mums been playing the Sims on iPad for years, she's spent some money here and there on it but they keep the free content updates coming so she's happy with it.
Just make the next The Elder Scrolls already...
