Microsoft is unifying pretty much all versions of Minecraft – except, of course, the PlayStation editions. While the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC, smartphone, and even virtual reality versions will all be updated to amalgamate the experience, it seems Sony has said no to such an endeavour – well, if you read between the lines anyway.
Moving forward, all DLC will be cross-platform between the abovementioned systems, and all versions will run on dedicated servers so everyone can play together. But the absence of PlayStation platforms – the PS4 in particular – suggests that Sony doesn’t want any part of this cross-console future. It’ll be interesting to see its response in interviews.

#ForThePlayers amirite
It doesn't matter because all the kiddies spend more time watching other people playing it on YouTube than playing it themselves.
Or MS are trying to pull a fast one to make Sony look bad, besides it's bloody Minecraft! Having players to play with is hardly a problem.
@adf86 I dunno, possibly. I expect this story to develop over the course of the week.
I don't actually know WHY Sony isn't doing this. Is it their back end? Is it not compatible or something?
Or are they just stubborn? This seems to be going against their main slogan and that's not a good sign. I recommend we watch this one. Microsoft is still in talks so we shall see.
This is honestly a non story . PlayStation doesn't need cross-play with other consoles for any game , MS trying to throw shade at Sony to make them look bad lol C+ for effort .
I mean....MS does own minecraft now. Maybe they're letting sony in last on purpose? Or maybe it's the same reason it took so long to get mods up and running for Fallout 4? Some kind of problem with the internal structure of PSN? I doubt we'll ever get the real answers, fun to speculate though.
Hmmmm, I find it hard to believe that Sony would say no to this, they've had cross play in the past. Minecraft being a Microsoft property tells me it's probably Microsoft wanting to get one up on Sony. Who knows though.
"It's not for lack of wanting to or effort on our part," senior global communications manager Aubrey Norris says. "We are in discussions with our partners right now. We want PlayStation and we invite Sony to bring PlayStation players onto Bedrock, but we can't get any further into — these are confidential discussions."
@BLP_Software Your assuming that it might be Sony's fault. All we have to go is MS's word and their a company I wouldn't sell a bloody virus too.
If Sony isn't holding this up or doesn't want to be a part of this they need to come right out and either say they are in talks or want no part in it.
Because as it stands it falls in line with the narrative that Sony holds up every chance for cross platform play. It looks bad.
Doesn't bother me any.
@ApostateMage This is true. Way too true.
Sony already has cross-play in other games.
So Microsoft lied to us - No surprise
It seems to me that Sony has separate IP as DLC for their version. That might have something to do with it.
It's either microsoft want one sided deal (like every ps4 multiplat game should have cross-play with xbox1/win10) or sony doesn't want to play with other ecosystem.
Considering sony already have a couple of cross-play titles with pc, I think it's the former.
MS was never big on this stuff either, until this gen when it was getting its ass whipped. Interesting...
Allowing for cross platform play does give fence sitters one less reason to get a certain console instead of or in addition to another one.
I would say it's more likely Microsoft who has said no.
Or - The versions all the consoles are gonna have to update to is the version with paid for mods and packs in-game using real money. Maybe that's something Sony isn't happy with as the money will most likely bypass them so they don't get a cut?
@MMLgamer Nintendo and MS have that too. Theyve confirmed console specific things wont go over at least not yet. So its not that.
A lot of people very quick to defend Sony and put the fault at MS. And let me guess on an Xbox website it would be the complete opposite. Never quite understood this devotion to a business myself. Personally I like games and I don't care what platform they are on. But I digress...
Minecraft is a big money spinner for MS so what does it gain by blocking Sony? Minecraft isn't a system seller since it is available on every device imaginable (almost). The support they gave to Minecraft on other platforms is commendable. They could have easily have made it Xbox/PC exclusive and kept Sony and Nintendo out of the picture. But like Sony and Nintendo, they are a business so they get more money this way. And at the end of the day, that is the priority.
For those that saying the PS4 doesn't need this as there are plenty of players. Some people have Minecraft playing friends using other platforms.
Don't forget the fuss with getting mods into Fallout 4 and Skyrim. Sony seemed less flexible there than MS did.
Don't kid yourselves. If Sony owned Minecraft then I expect there would still be a similar situation.
Cross platform play is a great idea and it is something I would like to see more of for multi-platform games - not everyone owns a PS4.
thing is during the montage there was a system in the wide shot the NEVER showed in the close up and it was a black box could it be the PS4 Slim but they just didn't say so given the fact they are technically competing with each other
I like crossplay features so if there is a choice I would buy the game on a different system so enable me to do that.
Xbox were against cross platform with Playstation last gen when xbox were ahead in numbers.
Playstation are against cross platform with xbox now playstation are ahead on numbers.
Business 101 right there, lock the competition out. Nothing to see here.
If you owned a business, would you allow a competitor with a smaller customer base access to your customers?
I do wonder if there is an infrastructure thing going on or something. I see no reason for Sony not to engage.
@JoeBlogs Apple and Google are direct competitors too. By this logic one of them would say no.
Saying "because its their competitor" is the worst reason when every other company involved is getting it all at once despite being in competition with each other.
Furthermore, realistically, Sony said no to EA Access. They said no to Rocket League cross platform. Took them 3 years to give external storage support.
For The Players is great marketing but im holding them by it. Every opportunity they have to follow it up they find some way not to.
Here is a screen shot from Nintendo Life and they had a comment from Mojang
they clearly say PlayStation so i would guess it's coming but for some reason they didn't announce it
perhaps Sony will announce it themselves?
@JoeBlogs There weren't many games that could do cross play between them. Only on the third party front and I believe that's a developer by developer discretionary move. Blizzard for instance, wont do it for Overwatch, but the guys for Rocket League will.
Here's the other problem. When you are outselling 2 to 1, you run into the problem. You get this offer. It benefits only ONE game out of your entire library. Its a huge, cultural icon, and is on literally every device ever, nor is it determining the sales of your hardware.
If Sony sits their and says nothing, or doesn't allow it, its going to look bad. They are going to be sat and the image becomes they are resting and just coasting along with their games and don't give a toss about the rest of the industry. Their whole mantra, based on the failings of the Xbox One, is being for the players. Giving players choice. But they flat out seem to refuse to do that.
They are being restrictive to their users, a lot of users, when their whole success early on was by saying "We aren't restrictive but Microsoft is".
But I do think, looking at Sony as a whole for a moment, this may be down to their back end. Maybe its the idea of using an Xbox Account within Minecraft on their hardware, or maybe they view it as bad value, but Sony keeps having these hiccups. Its either politics, or their back end isn't designed for this.
Which is shocking, because looking at this update, the back end of a phone, a PC, Xbox One and even bloody Nintendo, the company with the worst online in history, is able to do it. If its a technical reason, Sony needs to upgrade their backend stuff.
Does Minecraft even NEED cross-play though? There's a difference between WANT & NEED. Something like EVE: Valkyrie does NEED cross-play as its a VR title that will have a small pool of players as it is. War Thunder NEEDs it too as the combined pool between Ps4 & PC is only a few thousand. Minecraft? I don't see it. It doesn't need cross-play as it's a massively popular title that will have countless games at any time on each platform.
Whether you like Minecraft or not, this should be good news for gamers. This is a step towards cross platform play being a standard for future video games.
i think it's less about Sony not wanting to do it and more about the closed nature of PSN, perhaps there is some issue that is currently preventing them from doing so after all you can't even change your PSN id because of how PSN is built
