Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice – the exciting independently developed adventure from Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory – will battle its demons starting 8th August on the PlayStation 4, with pre-orders open now. The title promises to pit the titular Celtic warrior against the Viking underworld Hel, and will tackle taboo topics such as mental health throughout.
The game’s been built by a smaller team of 20 people, but is targeting top-tier production values as evidenced by the trailer embedded above. It’ll retail for $29.99/£24.99, and if you do pre-order on the PlayStation Store you’ll receive a dynamic theme centring on the burning tree scene from the game. Presumably we’ll see more at E3 2017 next week.

@get2sammyb Beyond hyped for this, but some sites are reporting this as a digital only title. Is this the case?
Would love a physical copy.
@Fight_Teza_Fight Watch to the end of the trailer. He basically says digital only.
I've been watching this for a while, might be a pick up for me in August/September depending on money and back log, I'm sure there will be more stuff to see during E3 next week.
Hype!! I'm definitely preordering at that price!!
(Friday when the 100/15 deal starts)
@get2sammyb So it does! Sucks. Would have made for a unique addition. Preodering.
I think this is the fasted pre order I've ever done. Hope it goes well for them!
Really want this to be good. Enslaved was among my favourite games of last gen and criminally overlooked. As such I have a lot of time for ninja theory. Hope this is a success for them
Digital only. Well there goes my hype
@Rob_230 Whey! High five for Enslaved!
@get2sammyb Did you see my message in the forums
It maybe digital only but it still seems a reasonable cost considering the Order 1886 for example. It will be interesting to see how well the campaign stacks up - length, story strength, replayability but I can't deny it looks visually incredible. Being Digital only, that is vitally important to me - its not like I can trade it in if its a 5hr game with no reason to revisit or it doesn't gel with me. Considering I paid £25 for my GotY version of The Witcher 3 (new on disc), I know what £20 - the cost of the Season Pass - can buy digitally and this would at least have to come close. Either that or I wait for the inevitable sale or leave it entirely...
On Disc, I may well have been more willing to take a punt...
OMG just 30 bucks?! Game looks awesome hyped as hell right now.
Heavenly sword was one of my favourite journeys on the ps3. Nariko was such a hot badass heroine and Bohan was so easy to hate and want to kill. Not to mention that final epic battle. Loved it and always hoped for a sequel. This may fill that void
No retail i have to think about it. How come a small indie can do it on Limited Run. And i see so many small indie games in the stores. Or give us the option i would pay €20 extra straight away. Sony give us the game retail. You took away Heavenly Sword already.
what no retail
@get2sammyb Not basically he says its digital only. Still digital means no real ownership what happens if PSN goes away. Bye all bought stuff that is what happens.
I've got to admit, I'm shocked by the number of people here who still demand physical releases.
Sucks there's no retail, but i want it anyways
Generally speaking, I don't mind digital only games, but this one is special case for me. I'll wait for a physical release. I'm sure it can happen even through a limited release.
Because 2017.
For all those asking for a physical release, I wouldnt be surprised to see it get one if the game is a success; a la life is strange. Alternatively, how about contacting limited run games - they might be interested in supporting a physical release of the game?
The price is nice, if the game's good I'll buy it at launch.
@Flaming_Kaiser You still can play digital games even after psn is gone, but you can't download it again, it's just like if you lose your physical games bdray.
@get2sammyb Keep in mind for those of us with Gamers Club or Amazon prime, any physical release is an automatic 20% off if you preorder. It definitely adds up, and has changed the way I purchase games.
The end of the trailer confuses me. He says it's "half the size of a AAA game" ok, but that's not really a good indicator of it's size or length of the game. If it's half the size of say, battlefield 1's campaign, it'll only be 3 hours long. Or if it's half the size of say, Horizon, it could be 15-20 hours long. Very bad idea to lump all AAA games together and use them as a metric for the length of a lesser game.
@get2sammyb When games I purchased started getting delisted from the Wii Virtual Console, then when my PS4 died and I lost my copy of P.T., I realized that the physical copies of games themselves are more valuable than the service that can make my purchase disappear. Digital is a convenience, but definitely not the best case scenario, as far as I am concerned.
@RedMageLanakyn I feel the exact same way about Amazon Prime. It definitely affects my purchasing habits.
If the game stacks up I will buy close to launch digital. More money to the devs!
I didn't get much from the trailer but after watching some more vids on YouTube I'll be preordering. I like what they are trying to achieve by making a smaller game but at the same production values and also taking more risks and the same identikit games that we get these days. Horizon is a great example as been one of the best new IPs I've played in years which gets bogged down a bit with box checking existing open world staples but when it focuses on its own path its truly outstanding. We need more creativity to bridge that gap between what the Indies are doing and what the big boys are up to.
I get that a female protagonist doesn't need to look like a model but uhh...whys this chick so ugly? Those teeth man
Just lost all interest with digital only.... only games i buy digital are the online multiplayer focused. ie (titanfall 1) (battleborn) etc. As other poster noted when psn goes kaput or the publisher decides to pull it for some legal reason thats it. Physical for me
@Broosh Because she's literally crazy (the game is about mental health and they've gone to extreme lengths to make that portion realistic - see their dev diaries), and she's a celt in viking land dealing with stuff...... she doesn't exactly visit the dentist.
...Also, for the record, what are you even talking about? she's not ugly.
wow this is gunna be good
I would have gone digital anyway.
@Mega-Gazz haha I'm just being an ass. Character looks aside the concept is interesting and game looks promising.
@Broosh
Thanks for the reminder and the embed. I preordered just this minute ago. You can tell them that and get some thanks from them too.
It looks a cracking game and the perfect combo of well crafted, multi-layerd character, story, action and visually stunning and I can't wait.
I listen to the sales pitch and they have me sold on it. Ima preorder this and moat likely love it. Need more companies like this and cd red.
@RedMageLanakyn Well, to be fair, Battlefield 1 is primarily online multiplayer, it's campaign is there for some extra substance. I'm guessing the game will be about 15-20 hrs.
