As leaked earlier today, Need for Speed Payback is the next instalment in EA Games’ legendary racing franchise – and it promises to be an “action racing fantasy” set in Fortune Valley, which is basically Las Vegas. The plot will see you assume the role of a trio of petrol heads, as you participate in “intense heist missions, high stakes car battles, epic cop pursuits, and jaw dropping set pieces”. The trailer embedded above effortlessly communicates the Fast & Furious vibe.
One interesting mechanic is that the casino theme means you’ll be able to bet on races, with the hopes of bankrolling future upgrades for your ride. Speaking of which, if you pre-order the game you’ll get the Platinum Car Pack, which comes with the following five vehicles:
- 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS
- 1969 Dodge Charger R/T
- 2008 Nissan 350Z
- 2016 Ford F-150 Raptor
- 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport
While the release date is scheduled for 10th November worldwide, if you buy the Deluxe Edition you’ll be able to play three days early, and you’ll also unlock some bonus cosmetics and a story mission pack. Are you liking what you see so far? Is this a step forward from 2015’s ill-fated reboot? Put your foot down in the comments section below.

So basically NFS: The Crew? 😆
"play 3 days early" I can't imagine ANYONE is THAT desperate for a new NFS game. It doesn't look TOO bad though. But yeah, my standard 29 bucks sale-fare. IF.
There are too many other games to play to bother with something that looks only not awful as opposed to good or even decent.
@Cheski Okay. We're barely seen anything yet, though?
This sure does look pretty. The last NFS game I played was NFS Underground 2.
I want a racing like Evolution Studios MotorStorm & Pacific Rift, or properly remaster them thay would look and play amazingly.
What they should do is make a remake of NFS underground.
@Deadstanley It wasn't bad but it wasn't a great NFS also.
NFS underground is the NFS Goat and they should take it as baseline. cars back then could be customized to infinity and we had the drag racing (god I miss those). I mean customizing your car is half of the fun in an NFS game so just give us more freedom to do so and bring back the neon lights
Played the last one and it was just has disappointing as NFS has been for some time. I suspect they only bought Criterion to eliminate the far superior Burnout
So... Need for Speed is essentially the Fast and Furious of the video game realm? I mean it looks like it's focusing on action and corny "we're a family" plot-lines rather than, you know, simple street racing. Also, there are God knows how many games in the franchise at this point.
Sod NFS, bring back burnout EA.
@get2sammyb, judging by the tone of the trailer, recent games in the series (particularly the 2015 reboot from the dame dev), and and an increasingly crowded Fall, this doesn't seem like something I will get excited about. I was curious to see what direction they were headed in with the series, and it seems like more of the same following from the last game. The gameplay could convince me otherwise, but I wasn't all that impressed with this trailer.
Trailer too short.
Most Wanted got me into the franchise and I loved it, Rivals was lots of fun too, the last entry was alright but just felt like it was missing something... It came off as too bland.
Since there wasn't an entry last year I'm looking forward to Payback quite a lot. The story already looks more fun so that's a good start.
@Cheski Fair enough.
This is good news it's a fun game and stylish. another one to add to the list maybe I'll get lucky and these will be free by the time I complete my backlog lol
As I mentioned, It's not bad, it's good test new ideas for a franchise, however, I, as a Fan of classic NFS, never I liked a radical change n the franchise, especially, adding mandatory story arcs (it's say, that the story mode is the only mode for single player) and focusing on points other than intense ""races"", avoiding traffic and police.
Now, this new NFS, well, I have mixed feelings about Fast and Furious movie saga, specially as affected to NFS since the first movie; but now..., ..., well, only I hope that it will be a great racing game and doesn't forget about NFS, plus, more options for single player mode, no only online...
Am I the only person in the world that loved pro street. That was my favorite. 😃
