Hop onto your PlayStation 4 right now and you'll find that there's a new firmware update available to download. Don't get excited just yet, though - the update is entirely optional and simply promises "improvements to the quality of the system performance". Still, one step closer to version 5.0, eh?
Do you always update your console, even if the software isn't mandatory? Please don't joke about bricking your PS4 in the comments section below.

I always update no matter what.
Doing it right now.
joke about me bricking my ps4
Gotta love that stability.
@verynaughtyboy Yes - though you can also tether it to a Vita for a 'coalition of chaos'
Just give me a PSN name change. Pretty please.
I never update until i know there are no issues.
I don't want an expensive brick!
Only suckers do it right away.
I have never had any issues with the performance of my ps4.. But I will update as usual..
Wonder why have it, if it is optional, unless it's a secret beta update to see if any problems arise. Oh that would be devious.
if it's optional i normally wait a few days to see if there are any issues
Absolutely, I would rather update at all times, at least this way it ensures that your warranty cannot be brought into question.
@FullbringIchigo fair point
Ohhhhh do I risk it?
I've had an issue with sleep
Mode since getting the pro. I have a 3.5" 4tb internal drive frankensteined up to sit outside the case (before USB drives were enabled) and sleep mode always froze and didn't work.
The last update fixed it perfectly.
If I get this I wonder if it will break again?
Guess there only one way to find out :/
The question is, can one really handle more stability? 😮
Looks like you guys might have bricked my PS4 just by talking about it! Why didn't you listen to the man!
I do only update when the system orders me hahahahha
Hmm...I still remember the update that bricked my original PS3 with much bitterness; it shouldn't happen. I will wait a few days at least.
Download speeds seem to use all my bandwidth and seem way faster but it's still early in the day, have to see how it holds up. My PS4 claims to fully download Watch Dogs in 26 minutes.
I'll leave it till my PS4 forces me to update.
Sony noticed how unshakably stable Nintendo's systems were and decided: "we want some of that."
Always
Jokes aside, my PS4 has stuttered and slowed down in the menus lately, in ways well distinguishable from RP connection lags. And once there was a time where it downright froze when I opened TES Online's PS Store page from within the game. So I guess "improvements to the quality of system performance" aren't a thing with any real value cap.
Still, what I'd really like in an update now is actually extending the system-based button remaps to Remote Play. I was excited to learn about the feature and then equally deflated to find out that connecting Vita somehow led to the system ignoring these settings completely. Better yet, googling the matter told me a story of a Hori peripheral that apparently added L2/R2 functionality to Vita and was even reportedly licensed by Sony... yet also doesn't support Remote Play, read: pretty much the one thing you'd need L2/R2 on your Vita for. Go figure. ¯(ツ)/¯
I only update when ordered, usually when trying to go to the Store as I don't play online anymore.
@nhSnork yeah my menu is really slow and stuttery too. Drives me crazy.
I'll take the lazy option. If something pops up and asks me to update, then I'll do it, otherwise I'm not going to worry about this.
Mine just updates automatically, so I guess all my updates are mandatory.
I downloaded but will wait to install this nonmandatory stability update. There is always the chance for problems like with the PS3 4.45 update that was pulled and a week later 4.46 was released to fix and replace 4.45. That was June, 2013.
I could not find if 4.45 was mandatory but 4.46 was.
All installed and the UI seems a tad quicker.
I don't know about anyone else but I currently have one of the original 500gb models (only purchased a couple of years ago) and the UI has slowed right down over the past few months. Feels like it's stuttering and struggling to load certain pages such as loading the trophies page or the page that updates you on what your friends have been up to.
Are Sony aware of this? I mean its really got noticeable in the last few months.
pssshhhuh, stability is for losers! Live a little! Experience the thrill of the unknown! Survival horror comes right into your living room!
any updates if this is safe? Saw I have on auto DL when in rest mode so hoping it's good?
