Sony’s been running a lot of interviews ahead of E3 2017 this week, and PlayStation America boss Shawn Layden’s been chatting a little bit about the Nintendo Switch, which has gotten off to a strong start since its release in early March. Speaking with TIME, the suit said that the device is a “great success for Nintendo” and he thinks that “it's definitely what that fanbase has been waiting for”.
But instead of seeing it as a competitor, Layden actually believes that the hybrid console will complement the PlayStation 4: “When you look at our numbers, I think it shows that a lot of gamers are a two-console family. And quite often those two consoles are PlayStation and Nintendo sitting side-by-side.”
It’s not unusual for Sony to be kind to Nintendo’s endeavours: Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida often speaks highly of the company, and has repeatedly iterated that the Mario maker’s success is important for the industry. But do you agree that the Switch can complement the PS4 – or are the systems in direct competition after all? Let us know in the comments below.

There's some competition obviously, but he's also right. I want a PS4 and a switch eventually - and for different reasons.
Sorry slightly off topic Sammy but other than the Polygon interview and this TIME one are there any more recent Layden interviews worth a read?
Well, I have both and I have no regrets. Great exclusives in each side. In the rare instances of multiplatform availability, I gravitate towards the Switch port.
And if you want to play the highest rated games of the year you really need both. I hope Switch is a success because the more the merrier.
There wont be much competition until they have mostly the same games available on both. Right now they are very different flavors.
Corporate BS. Bu at the same time he speaks truth, they are complimentary.
But at the same time Sony could do it better, and if it sells well they may try it.
Either way, the Switch represents no value to Sony gamers, they have all they need. It's only a complimentary situation when youre on the Nintendo side with no games.
@bbtothe There's some good stuff on Glixel.
@BLP_Software I disagree. I think even with the small games out now on switch that it provides something for Sony users. Honestly I'd love to have Zelda, mario kart, and more and I think those unique experiences allow the switch to compliment Sony users.
Yep. I only own the PS4 at the moment but the Switch will be my second console when they become easier to get.
I will only get it for the Nintendo exclusives though. If a game is available on both I don't want the watered down version.
Seems about right. Nintendo Switch's big draws are the hybrid nature of the device and the ability to play Nintendo games. PS4 doesn't accommodate either of those needs. Obviously there's a little bit of overlap in some of the games they get, but they don't really seem to be competitors so much as two companies serving different needs in the same broad market.
It really does complement the PS4 quite a bit.
Until the PS VITA 2 right guys
True. Since PS2 days, I owned a PS2 and Gamecube (sorry to say that I loved the Gamecube more), then the Wii and PS3 (PS3 was my choice) and now, a PS4 and eventually...maybe by next year, a Switch. The way I see it and always have, both companies have great IP's, but, since Gamecube, it's always been where Sony gets the sequels (Blood Omen 2 was on Gamecube, but the others weren't, along with Balder's Gate and Gauntlet), which is something that I hope the Switch doesn't miss out on (which I'm sure it will). Nintendo is the kid-friendly system, that still has the games that draw the older crowd (like myself) into them too...who doesn't like playing Mario Kart or a Mario adventure? Sony has their great exclusives too...Hot Shots Golf is a game that my wife and I play to death, along with Buzz and Sing Star! No matter what, I'll always be the Sony and Nintendo fan...unless a Dreamcast 2 comes around or another Sega Console, but just like in the past, I'll own all three then! (Dreamcast, PS1 and N64...yup, still have 'em!!!!)
@Splat However, Stardew Valley would be a nice addition for both, and possibly a few others, but the Big AA titles will probably miss Switch. To me, it's fun to get the trophies for the games that come on both, so they'll be gotten on the PS4 first. However, if the game is addicting and fun, and it's also available on Switch at a cheap price, I'd double dip...however, just like all of nintendo's consoles, even if a game is available on all three consoles, nintendo's version seems to be the most expensive of the batch...something I don't really get to this day.
I can confirm since I have both of them xD
I grew up with Nintendo and Sony consoles and a PC. They will always hold a special place in my heart. Heck, I even have my old Gameboy Color and PSP on the shelf.
Now my Xbox 360 was sold years ago and my Xbone and original Xbox are dust collectors. Do like playing Rare Replay, Gears and Conker once in a blue moon.
I'd like to get behind the Switch but I just can't. I see it going exactly the way of the Wii U. Heavily front loaded in sales & then drop.
If they can't get 3rd party on board they'll fail. FIFA18 on Switch is going to be a completely different game. Different engine, no journey career mode, but I guarantee it will launch at a premium price. This is within year 1, imagine by year 3 or 4 when I think we'll get the PS5.
Maybe I'm just jaded. I'd like to play Nintendo games, but the Switch is just too gimmicky for me.
Then there's is the PS4, that has such a massive library that even if there were no more new games, I'd still be playing in 2020.
My Switch and PS4 Pro are literally sitting side by side. Great consoles, both of them.
Well I own both systems, so I would be happy to see both thrive.
Especially the Switch considering its replacing the 3DS, aka the best system since the almighty SNES and PS1.
Sony at Nintendo: You complete me!!
They sure do work well together, but ultimately they still compete for my time, and therefore my money. I've barely touched the PS4 in the last 3 months, but am finally getting Nier, so all that is about to change.
Yes, I agree. I plan to buy the switch when the new 3D mario game is out, or next month if splatoon 2 single player turn out to be good. I like the single player mode on the first one but it's too short.
As of now, zelda is the only game that I want on switch, and since I mostly play on my tv, the switch portability is kind of useless to me.
@Fight_Teza_Fight I think the switch is only good for people that like nintendo games, don't expect AAA games much from 3rd party since the switch is too different to easily port games.
Agree on the ps4 massive library, I still have a lot of games to play like yakuza 0, horizon and persona
I own both and I couldn't imagine my life without either of them.
They both have their uses and anyone who doesn't own both quite frankly you're missing out
The whole nicey nice thing always annoys me. MS did this two generations with Nintendo as well when it was clear people were looking forward to the original Wii. Peter Moore's whole 'Wii60' nonsense. Fact is Sony and Nintendo are in the video game market, they both have hardware out there, they're competitors, that simple. Doesn't mean people can't like both, PS4 is my primary console but I have to say I've played the Switch nearly as much since I got it. It's an awesome piece of hardware.
People have, in the past, had two consoles. If you consider the Wii sales and then 360/PS3 sales, it is clear that a lot of households had more than one, even if you take into the account the fad nature of the Wii that went outside the core gaming market.
Not sure the Switch will do that but, in terms of marketing and orientation, Sony are competing with Microsoft in a way they aren't competing with Nintendo.
I picked up a Switch at launch and absolutely love it. PS4 is still my 'main' console, but the two definitely complement each other. Whereas, try as I may, I still can't give myself enough of a reason to buy an Xbox other than as a 4k blu-ray player (dammit Sony).
Agreed.. PS4 and XBox are competitors day and night but Switch is a fantastic complement. Playing disgaea 5 on the go feels so good....and I've already clocked in 100+ hours on PS4.
Not to mention Horizon Zero Dawn and Zelda: BotW.. PS4 and Switch are really THE consoles to own this gen.
@NintendoFan4Lyf I was talking about big AAA games like battlefield 1 or final fantasy xv. Those 2 games doesn't run smoothly on old ps4, I don't think they can be ported to switch. I mean maybe they can, but it will be horrible mess, like playing the witcher 3 on old low-end pc.
Best of Both worlds imo
I have both, haven't touched my PS4 since the Switch came out. Love the hybrid nature of the console. There's been a couple games on the PS4 that I was previously interested in that I've not bothered with just because the idea of being tied to the tv to play them seems so archaic now. Once you've had the experience of being able to undock Breath Of The Wild and take it with you, there's no going back to being tethered to your tv like some kind of caveman...
They are side by side on my shelf.
I've got a PC a ps4 and a switch and I love all of them for different reasons. Local multiplayer is switch all the way. Ps4 is great for easily accessible graphics and fun online gameplay. Pc... Well I don't really need to explain why pc is good lol.
