We’ve panned PlayStation for turgid press conferences so many times that it’s nice to know it was paying attention. Over the past few years it’s gotten much better at delivering its briefings, and it knocked it out of the park last year with a frenetic affair that had a much shorter running time than previous editions – but was packed to the rafters with great games.
And it sounds like we can expect the same format from next week’s E3 2017 show: “The crowd will only have to suffer I think in aggregate 90 seconds of me,” PlayStation America’s affable Shawn Layden told TIME. “And in the middle will be all the games.” The big question is: will the live orchestra be there as well?

Perfect. I honestly thought last year was the best Sony presser I had ever seen. I couldn't believe how great it was and how they showed off vr without being mood killing. Let's hope this year is even better.
I wouldn't say last years was 'packed' with 'great games. That's not to say the games they did show were not 'great' but that Sony opted to show relatively 'few' titles. What this did though, especially as they also kept the dialogue to a minimum, was allow each game more time to be 'shown off'.
That gave us a more in-depth look, than trying to dissect snippets of information from a barrage of montage trailers that mix cut scenes and game-play but an actual look at what we can expect from the game. Had they left 'Days Gone' with just that trailer, I am sure it wouldn't have had the impact that did and ending on the game-play really sold that game. God of War wasn't just trailer but good look at what I assume was an opening level.
By given each game time, it also meant that no game went unforgotten. They could have crammed in a lot more - like Gravity Rush, Persona, Nier, Nioh, Hellblade, Dreams, Wild etc as well as indie games. So packed, it wasn't - not compared to how packed it could of been but it also meant we got a better look at the quality of games they did bring...
Itll be better than the emptiness/30 minute crapshoot the competition does
that's right Sammy.syphon filter best ps1 games ever
sly Cooper 5 son word up.and yes syphon filter is the best ps1 game ever
As long as there are no TV shows as a major focus I'm good.
I can't really separate out 1 year, or show, from the next, though the show w/ the 3 big reveals of FF7, TLG and S3 will always stand out, but they do seem to have the basics down the past few times - Start w/ a good long exciting trailer of a game we already know about - so this year probably GoW, then spend some time on games like Gran Turismo, maybe some Dreams, then a big new Spiderman trailer, more Death Stranding and Days Gone, then put everyone to sleep for 10 minutes w/ PSVR, then show off some super exciting new game at the end w/ a reveal trailer. Not sure what, but PS4 is only 4 years old, has to be 1 bullet left in the chamber. Hard to top Last of Us 2, that's for sure, but something. Have we seen a new Crash Bandicoot yet? I know we're all expecting one but I'm not sure how official it is yet.
They have so many good games coming out, they'd have to try to screw it up. No Man's Sky 2 maybe. Or PSASBR2.
I'm hyped Sony did good last year.
I'm glad that Sony understand that this works, we don't want cringey comedy sketches, we just want good games.
@rjejr Bloodborne 2 and new IP from Sucker Punch. One to open and the other to close! Now that would be a way to bookend the show! But maybe you hold one for PSX...
Pumped, got my tickets to the playstation experience (no easy task), looking forward to seeing it all go down on the big screen!
@rjejr they did a great job of not putting everyone (well, me at least!) to sleep with vr last year and that's coming from someone who at the time was not very interested. Definitely not a fiasco like wonder book or the other time they showed off vr (was that 2015?)
The beginning of the conference... My gosh. This orchestra, this long piece of epic music, no f.... explanation at all, everyone getting chills... Then this trailer with the boy... i remember, I was like "wait, what... Horizon or what..??" "FEED US. I AM HUNGRY" (crowd is getting nutz, so everyone in front if his computer. The game begins. New angle, new gameplay, god of last of us, everyone "oooooooh..." this kind of surprise are so good.
I kept the entire video of the press conference and I'm still watching parts from time to time, with or without the reactions of the ex-employees of gametrailers...
Oh and the resident eVIL name reveal was so good too. Absolutely epic.
Just think about them juicey games waiting to be revealed.
Yummy.
I think they should stick to covering games and content that's planned for a release in the next year. Fair enough, one or two may get delayed, but no more reveals of titles that may not even end up on the PS4.
It'll be tough to top last year. God of War's new direction isn't what I was hoping for but no doubt people are hyped. Spider-Man had an awesome debut trailer, the Crash Bandicoot segment was a nice call back to the past and the Resident Evil VII reveal was very well done. I look forward to seeing what surprises Sony has, especially since it's been suggested there might be more Japanese games after the success of RE VII, Nioh and NieR.
I prefer this format. Straight to what everyone wants: games and games.
Leave all the talking about said games when they sit down and show a portion of the game later.
Sounds good as long as they dont announce The PS4 Pro Pro Pro or something silly and keep the games whizzing past, then I will be happy. I dont really like most E3 pressers with all the overtop soundbits and self congratulations.
@ztpayne7 I typed Wonderbook but then deleted it b/c I figured that was a one-off and they won't make that mistake again. It's possible I was thinking about the original PSVR segment if you say there were 2 times when they showed it.
But whether it's Wonderbook, some TV show, or somebody talking about who knows what, there always seems to be a 10-15 minute segment about 2/3 thru that just drags too long. Makes me wonder if they do it on purpose to make the ending seem better?
But overall they have been notably good the past few years. At least they haven't' dragged an aging incoherent Pele out on stage.
I feel so confident Sony will have a good show next Monday night that I'm not even really thinking about it, more interested in what MS will have to promote Scorpio - maybe actual online betting for Fantasy Football Leagues? - and what new games Switch will get, it can't be the Wii U port machine forever. So Sony will likely win, but I'm more curious about the other 2 have to offer.
@rjejr yes I get the feeling and I totally hate it when that happens. It didn't happen last year though. They would announce a game and then be like oh look! It also works in vr! And did a quick montage for vr. Last year was the first e3 press conference I had ever seen without much of that downtime (minimal destiny talk).
There was another year where there was this weird, look what vr can do! And they showed two guys throwing a disc back and forth to each other and it was terrible and long. I'm pretty sure that was a vr showing.
@ztpayne7 "throwing a disc back and forth"
Yeah, now that you mention it I do remember that.
I'll give Sony credit, I think they'll get it right. It would be easy for them to spend 15 minutes on PS Now, PS Vue, PS+. I'm sure MS will mention Game Pass and BC on Scorpio. I read yesterday X1 may have sold 30mil. I'm not sure how based on the games. X1S does seem like a really nice 4k ultra blu ray player, but I'm pretty sure Wii U has a better game section, 1st party anyway, and that only sold 13mil at about the same price. Is anybody waiting w/ bated breath for a Quantum Break sequel?
Put another way, if PS4 Pro, w/ all of it's games, is being outsold 4-1 by Slim (I know Sony likes to promote it as a good thing, but to me it just looks like - "Why even bother making it?") then how is a higher priced Scorpio going to sell well, X1S already has those games at a reasonable price w/ BC and a 4k player and all that. Will 2 out of every 10 Xbox sold be Scorpio? Really looking to see how they'll promote it. Maybe they'll go back to the payment plan, $25 per month for 2 years, which includes Live Gold and Gamepass membership?
