Final Fantasy XV is a mental game -- we've know that for a while. Square Enix has been adding to it bit by bit since it launched last year, and things are about to get even weirder once this multiplayer expansion finally hits.
The game's official Japanese site now has details on what the multiplayer mode actually is. Basically, you'll make your own custom character and team up with other players to kill monsters and complete missions. To be honest, it sounds much more ambitious than we thought it would.
Up to four players will be able to hunt together, and if you don't feel like playing with other humans, computer controlled characters will back you up. Meanwhile, it looks like some sort of weapon upgrade system will keep you playing as you grind for better gear and level up your character in the process.
The multiplayer expansion, which is apparently called Comrades, will be available as part of the game's season pass, and you'll need an active PlayStation Plus membership in order to play. What's more, Square Enix will be launching a worldwide beta next month from the 3rd August to the 8th August. Again, though, you'll need to have purchased the title's season pass in order to gain access.
What do you make of all this multiplayer madness? Track down a behemoth in the comments section below.
Update: The expansion's English site has gone live. You can find it through here.

This actually interests me more than the character episodes.
now this is how FF should do multiplayer games in the main series not MMO's, don't get me wrong the MMO's were fun but they should NEVER have been part of the main series, they should have been a spin off at best
I thought this game was not bad on completing the story but have then went on to sink 80+ hours into the post game content. Episode Gladiolus was OK and Episode Prompto was actually really good so I'm intrigued by the multiplayer.
Neat.
@FullbringIchigo So you think online is better shoe horned into a single player experience than built from the ground up with multiplayer in mind and then given it's own numbered instalment?
This update looks like it could be pretty good but I can't imagine it will be a better online experience than 11 and 14.
All that said, I'd have preferred to have had Final Fantasy Online 1, Final Fantasy Online 2, etc.
@kyleforrester87 agreed. I dont really fancy the mmo's as I dont have the time to commit to them to justify a monthly subscription. As a result 11 and 14 are the only gaps in my final fantasy collection which is quite frustrating. Should have called them something different, away from the mainline releases.
On ff15; this sounds interesting, and a good way to get me playing again. I had decided to give the season pass a miss - but this has me quite interested. I guess this is why so many staff have continued to work on the game since release. This could be quite good. But Square. Please Dont forget to get cracking on FF16 if you haven't already!
It's not weird. Never has been. It's from people from a different part of the world. It's fantastic.
Sounds like Phantasy Star or others MMORPG lite experiences that I could fit into my time schedule way better than something like FF14! Will surely try it... Anyway this is insane!
@kyleforrester87 kind of, IF they was going to have multiplayer in a main number FF then it should also have a full single player story
the MMO's should have been spin offs like you said FF Online 1 then FFO2 etc, etc
FF12 should have been FF11 FF13 should have been FF12 and FF15 should have been FF13, FF11 and FF14 should have been Final Fantasy Online and Final Fantasy Online 2
or at the very least they should make some single player FF games set in the FF11 and FF14 universes because on of the things about FF games is longevity in 20 years time you could probably still play any other FF game (as long as you have the systems of course) but can you say the same for FF11 and 14? it means fans and future fans will NEVER be able to play the entire main series
of course going free to play with micro transactions would help though
And here I thought we'll be playing as the four main characters of FFXV. Wasn't expecting this.haha I want to see what the is character creation like.
That top right pic reminds me of inFamous.
Omg i can't wait ^^ this could be so good! Party monster slayin of some legendary FF superbosses would be a dream scenario
@Bliquid we would be assisting Iris and Aranea against the demons right? Right??? I can't be the only person who thought that
@Bliquid I am excited too but if Noctis is gonna be there it is not set in the 10 years ;_;
One day I'll finish this game! Don't ya just hate when u play a good bit of a game and then stop playing for some reason and then when u decide to start it again u realize that you've forgot how to play and what's going on. So then u start over and remember doing all them side quests and just can't bring yourself to do them again. That's where im at!
But back on point, this actually looks like it could be pretty good. Besides that created character looks like he should be in a bowling league with that nice shirt of his.
Oh man. This looks awesome!
@Bliquid yes, let's hope
Okay, this is the coolest thing that's been announced for FFXV.
