The PlayStation 4 has passed the five million units sold mark in its native Japan, which is a relatively impressive milestone for a home console in the Land of the Rising Sun these days. We suppose that congratulations are in order.
And boy are we glad, because there's bugger all else to write about from a PlayStation perspective this time around. As expected, Splatoon 2 dominates the latest software charts, causing the Nintendo Switch to surge to the top of the hardware charts. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age managed to hang on in the top five on Sony's current-gen console, but apart from that, there's really not much to see.

Geez, Splatoon 2 sold more in its first few days on the market than the accumulated sales of any other Switch game to date.
Well, I can't say much. The game is ridiculously addictive. And this is coming from a person who usually ignores online multiplayer.
I have no idea why the guy on that picture is so excited - he is clearly holding two empty boxes unless he is ridiculously strong or they have been superglued to him as some kind of corporate punishment.
I call shenanigans.
I feel like I am missing out on Splatoon but it just doesn't grab me. Maybe when I have less to play I'll pick it up.
They're getting ready for Monster Hunter World next year. Congrats PS4 on 5 million. Cheers 🍻
Not surprised Splatoon 2 is doing well. I heard the Japanese like things with Tentacles in
@Fooligan no one in japan will care about MHW.
PS4's doing pretty well this year. It's understandably being overshadowed by Switch, but it's comfortably up year-over-year and doing fine in a region increasingly dominated by handhelds.
@JoeBlogs Then that lad had mad skillz. If only there were any Switches left in Japan, he could probably juggle like 8 of them
How much has PS4 sold overall worldwide through consumers? Was it 55M or 60M?
@manu0 Dude it's Monster Hunter in HD. People in Japan will care. Now come drink with me man. 🥃🍻🥃and some 🍶since we're talking about Japan here.
@get2sammyb
I was reading on another site that the PS4 crossed the 5M number in Japan quicker than the PS3. Can you confirm?
@Fooligan they don't care about HD lol. they care about hunting together in LOCAL multiplayer.
@Wasted_Smuggler It was 60 million a while ago, it's probably closer to 65 million now.
WTF Splatoon 2 sold, in the first week of it's release, more than Zelda in total in Japan or am I reading the numbers wrong? Lol
@manu0 Its still gonna sell. Japan loves Monster Hunter. I'm sure there are a few shut ins in Japan that are looking forward to MH in HD and online multiplayer.
@JAMes-BroWWWn Japan really liked Splatoon. Even the first one sold something like 1.5 million on Wii U.
Those Switch numbers are crazy. Understandably as Splatoon 2 is super fun. And since it is an evergreen it will be here for months to come.
Not bad since japan is portable land, sony needs psp2/psvita2 to stay competitive in japan market.
@sinalefa Yeah, Splatoon 1 in Japan also boosted Wii U numbers and stayed in the charts for a long time. Same thing will probably happen here, especially as Switch doesn't have many other upcoming games. In Japan, if you buy a Switch, you will probably buy Splatoon 2. Splatoon 1 attach rate for Wii U was also very high.
@Mahe wow that's insane. I thought FF15 was hugh when it came out in Japan but Splatoon 2 now... it's just insane!!
Wow switch, way to go. Ps4 numbers are super impressive too. Big week in japan.
Insane Switch and Splatoon numbers, but well deserved, the game is just pure fun to play.
Those minecraft numbers on vita continue to be rather impressive!
Looks like the NS has another evergreen title under its belt
5million sold, and it's only getting better. Absolutely deserved for Sony.
Nice to see a strong debut for Splatoon 2 and a healthy boost in Switches sold. Hopefully both continue to do well.
Also happy that PS4 seems to be enjoying its best year yet it Japan but can't help but feel it still deserves better. There's been a lot of good Japanese games on the console this year but that market still seems somewhat reluctant to fully jump aboard which is why I still worry about the long-term prospects for home consoles in Japan.
@Gamer83 Japan has been a handheld dominant country for over 10 years now. Here's a weird factoid: PS4 hasn't outsold PS Vita in Japan yet. However, it is likely that PS4 will pass 6 million before Vita, and then go on much longer than Vita. But home consoles in Japan just don't sell as well as handhelds do in Japan these days, not even Wii did.
