Sony is making an adaptation of the 2015 animated movie Monkey King: Hero Is Back for the PlayStation 4, and it will be distributed globally by Oasis Games. Announced as part of the platform holder’s ChinaJoy 2017 press conference, the project represents a collaboration between the Japanese giant, developer HexaDrive, and rights holder October Media.
The game’s being billed as a “monster slaying adventure”, where you’ll play as either the titular Monkey King or Jiang Lieur, and it will follow the plot of the film with new chapters interspersed throughout. This is such a big deal in China that the manufacturer’s even plotting a commemorative console bundle to celebrate the launch – and there will be a standalone PlayStation VR experience, too.
You can catch the game’s debut trailer embedded above. Has this project tickled your fancy? Look to the East in the comments section below.

Sounds....er....
Well. Thats a weird one.
@BLP_Software How so?
looks interesting, kind of getting a God of War vibe from it
@get2sammyb I never thought Id see make a game specifically aimed at China. Guess it might be lucrative for them there after all.
Then again they need somewhere new to dominate too XD
Looks cool just...random.
@BLP_Software Fair. They've made these weird regional specific games before, I remember there was a Bollywood one for the PS3/PS2 but I forget its name.
Hang on...
This!
It's a Bollywood movie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ra.One
@get2sammyb Woooow.
I mean its excellent market recognition and admittedly third parties arent good at that generally, often giving wrong systems the wrong games (Mass Effect 3 meant nothing to Nintendo owners as it ends the story yet other systems got the cheaper trilogy for instance).
So they know their target market. That would be the best way to break into a very tough market.
Impossiblw to say how it will do because...China.
Sounding like a politician now.
Nothing like the original monkey hero on ps1 . Would love sequel to that game
@BLP_Software it's made in China in a collaboration between Sony, Hexa Drive, October Media and Oasis Games, and based on a hugely popular Chinese movie franchise, but it's getting a world wide release. Info from: https://gematsu.com/2017/07/sony-announces-monkey-king-hero-back-game-ps4
Just as long it isn't a VR-exclusive indie game with lackluster content, mediocre graphics and/or unresponsive controls (I'm especially looking at you, Oasis Games), I'm fine with this. It makes sense that they will market the heck out of it, since the Monkey King is an incredibly iconic deity in China.
I'd be well up for this. I remember reading a manga based on the monkey king a long time ago....
Really enjoyed it actually, was suprised at how much Dragon Ball took from the Legend of the Monkey King.
@ZurapiiYohane I GET THAT JOKE!
Wow.. Finally we getting a China made console game.
The production value looks good, not just some movie tie-in..
Definitely looking forward to this.
@Fight_Teza_Fight
Yes, good call! Son Goku is Monkey King's name. He has the magic staff that can shift in size, a tail like a monkey and the artist Akira Toriyama has even drawn him in his interpretation of the Monkey King's outfit in earlier volumes (shows him with a head band and the tiger skin wrapped around his waist).
The movie wasn't amazing. I enjoyed it but didn't think it warranted a video game
