You can already play the original Dragon Quest for free on the PlayStation 4 by beating Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age and casting a spell to redeem it. However, publisher Square Enix will be bringing all three original entries to Sony’s new-gen console this August in Japan – and you’ll be able to purchase them from the PlayStation Store.
Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest II will launch on 10th August for ¥600 (~$5) and ¥850 (~$7) respectively, while Dragon Quest III will follow in “late August” for ¥1,500 (~$13). There’s no word on a Western release for any of these at the time of typing, but do let us know if you’d be interested in purchasing them for your PS4 in the comments section.

I haven't played 1 or 2, but I find number 3 a very solid entry in the series, well the SNES version anyway. Haven't played the NES original or Gameboy Color port.
Apparently also coming to 3DS?
And they've said DQ11 Switch will be talked about "When the time is right" which most are putting two and two together and there is a timed exclusivity on the console version.
@BLP_Software "And they've said DQ11 Switch will be talked about "When the time is right" which most are putting two and two together and there is a timed exclusivity on the console version."
Nintendo Life is this way >>>>>, thanks.
Back on topic...
Hope so. Never played a main line DQ entry.
Neat, but what's the reasoning behind the difference in price? They look the same to me.
Nicee, I hope squareenix bring it to the west
@Octane Dq 1&2 is a nes game, dq3 is a snes game. Maybe the first game is cheaper because it's short compared to the second game.
@BLP_Software It always switch this, switch that with you, maybe you're in the wrong website lol
@wiiware Hm.. still.. $5 and $13. Maybe I'll just try the first one in that case.
I enjoyed 1 and 2 on my phone. The localisation is already done so I don't see why these wouldn't be released on the PS4 here.
@Octane they have different prices on smartphones too. I guess the reasoning is 2 and especially 3 are much bigger games, which is a bit daft.
if these came to the UK (along with DQ 4-9 as well) i would be on these quicker than ants at a picnic
@wiiware Says the guy called WiiWare Given the situation with DQ11 its relevant to the discussion of the PS4.
@get2sammyb Its relevant to you guys because it means you've got exclusivity for most of the games sales lifespan
@Octane The first one is free if you bought dq 11
And it seems there's nes and snes version for dq 1-3.
@mookysam Yeah, I guess... it's a bit silly, it's not as if porting those games over was that much more trouble.
@wiiware Right, I forgot about that! I plan on getting DQ11, so I shall also enjoy DQ1 if they bring that deal over.
@BLP_Software I like my switch too, but this is playstation website so switch discussion is off topic. There's nothing wrong with my username as long as I'm not talking about wiiware in here
Omg i want them all !!!!! ^^
@get2sammyb Can we talk about the Switch if we have both a PS4 and a Switch?
Besides, it seems that Dragon Quest games are coming to both from here on out.
I wish DQVIII was available as a PS2 classic, the one with Jessica's original voice actress.
I would love to see these slated for western release. These games were a staple of my childhood, and any chance to play them again always makes me happy. Make it so!!!
I still have the copy I got from Nintendo Power years ago
@ApostateMage Same here, shame they'll probably never bring over DQ8 on PSN.
@Fight_Teza_Fight you should check out dragon quest 8, it's a great game and a perfect place to start on the series.
@get2sammyb So we aren't supposed to talk about any topic other than Sony content on this site? I get that it is focused on specific content, but I've been on here for years and have always seen/participated in discussions about gaming on all formats. It seems silly to limit conversation.
@flummerfelt I can't speak for Sammy, but lately it seems that the comment sections end up getting derailed about Switch stuff. We understand that it's new and all but honestly we want to keep the comment section on track here that's all. Hope that makes sense.
@Tasuki Makes perfect sense to me. Tired of all the switch and 3ds talk from the same people.
I for certain have no problem if you buy your whole gaming library on the switch. Neither should any one else. But since we are on ps site we really don't care.
Fantastic news... for Japan at least. Now get them (re)translated!
Playing these games on PS4 would be so awesome.
@flummerfelt That's not what I said? There's a time and a place for all discussions. Is chat about the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI relevant in an article about Dragon Quest 1-3 releasing on the PS4? I'd argue not.
We turn a blind eye to these kind of derailments pretty regularly, but sometimes it's worth the reminder.
@naruball @lixei32 This. It's annoying to see switch this switch that comment in ps news, I mean it's okay if the articles is about ps4 vs switch sales, or graphics comparison, or what are your playing this weekend, but normal ps news should not be derailed for switch.
All I want to know is how they come back. With original 2D graphics or 3DS style?
@msrx782 It's just the originals ported to PS4 I believe.
@get2sammyb @msrx782 They have remade 2D graphics, but they're not complete remakes like DQ7 was.
Yes!
@get2sammyb
@Mahe
I wish they could be true. PS4 graphics is gorgeous, but 2D Dragon Quest is like there is no place like home.
Dragon Quest III was released on the SNES? Must have been a non-North American release? We got the first four games (Dragon Warrior) on the NES and and first three on Game Boy.
